The Trustees of the Bury St Edmunds Sooety CIO (the Bury S(Kietyl present thelr report together wlth the financlal
statements ofthe Society for the year ended 31 March 2024.
The Trustees have adopted the pro￿510n5 of Accounting and Reportin8 by Chartues: Statement of Recommended
Practice appllcable to charitles preparlng their accounts In accordance with the Financlal Reportin8 Standard appllcable

On 18 November 2021, the Charlty Commission authorised thè formation of The Bury St Edmunds Society ao
IreBlstered charfty 11966401 to recefve the assets of the 'old' Bury St Edmunds Society Ire8lstered tharlty 2632301.
FollowlnB conflrmatory resolullons passed by the members of ihe Soclety, all assets, liabllltles and undertaklngs of the
'old' Soclety were transferred to The Bury St Edmund5 Soclety ao on 31 March 2022. The Bury Sl Edmunds Sodety
CIO Commenced operatlon5 on l April 2022 and thi5 report deals with the period from l April 2023 to 31 March 2024.
The Bury Society was originally established In 1971 as a Civic Society dedicated to carin8 about Bury St Edmunds, Its
Past, present and fijture. It alm5 to Impro￿ the enjoyment and appreciatlon of 8ury St Edmunds for all those who use
the town through fosterln8 Its heritage and character, encoura8ln8 a balance of the new wlth the old and engagln8

lin8erin8 risk of Covid disruption, the winopal risks at present are the potential h)ss of membershlp and sponsor5hlp

The Trustees confirm that they hab* referred to the Charlty CThnmlsslon's General Guldance on Public Benefit when

3.1 The Burysoclety
The Sodety's Tlsk asse55ment Indlcated that demographirs and e¢onomlc clrcumstsnce coukl have an effect on
rnember5hlp subscrlptlon5 in 2023-24 and particular effort ha5 been made by the member5hlp Secretary to ensure that
Members renewed thelf subscripllons. because of thls. Indmdual and Corporate membershlps have largely held up
over the year:

Bury Socievs members. promote enga8ernent wlth the hlstory and culture of our town. and to raise awareness of the
actlvltle5 and campalgns of the Bury 5oclety.
In addStlon to our popular members. Coffee Momlngs and the Winter Lunch. we organlsed coach trlps to St Ajbans and
the DeHavilland Museum in September. We also hosted smalSer events, suth as the Winter Qulz. As part of our
outreach activities, we hosted a summer event at the Gulldha51 In Au8USt 2023. whlch Induded a tour of the bulldlng
and a drinks receptlon, and also took part in the'our Town. Our Stories. exhibttion in March.
Other actlvltles of the MCE Induded the extensive promotSon of the 'Save Our Archfves, campalgn, usln8 events,
petltlons. and soclal medla to demonstrate the Importan￿ of thls valuable resource to rhe town. We also began a new
regular serles of artlcles In the Bury Free Pre5S to hlgti1￿ht the work of the Sodety and attract new members.
Finally, and equally Importantly, the MCE committee have been making vital improvements to the Bury Society
websites, Implementlng online payment for member5hlps. and Impro￿n8 the user experlence overall.

Donations were made towards the restoration of a bench on the Edmund Roundabout, Kevelaer Way signa8e, the
Southgate Community Centre security measures. the Moyse's Hall Museum for the purchase of the Lindsay coin hoard
and for replacing hanging basket chains and caplllary matt{￿ The Society wa5 a150 pleased to a55bst Qafty Foxe5 In
the5r Famlly Fun Day and Christmas free Projects.
To round off the 2023-24 year. a Very well attended wlnte¢s lunth was held in the Southgate Community Centre.
The committee would Ilke to thank Sam SaloWay￿00kt and the othw member5 of the MCE commlttee for all the hard
work that was carrled out in ihe orBanlsatlon of these events.
To ensure that communications were malntalned wth the Socoety membÈrs and the public, the normal three issues of
the Society's AevSew were published in 2023-24. Copie5 were hand delfvered or posted by mail. Copies of thè Rewew
are available on the Soclety's website www.burysaciety.com. The committee would Ilke to thank Russell Cook and Alan
8aKter for thelr help Sn producln8 the Rewew and io Sue Savage for organ1￿n8 its d15tributlon. Alan also contlnues hls
work to enharKe the user experlence of the Socfiety's website and the committee would like to especlalty thank hlm for
hls efforts In th15 respert. MembeTS of the Society re8vlady contrlbute articles to the Bury Free Press and other local
and re8lonal nthvspapers and ha¥e appeared on Radio Suffolk to discuss and comment on the herltage and economi¢
development of the iown.

surroundln8 the lown. The Society monltors plannin8 appllcatlon5 rnonthty and. if there is a consensus amon8St
ommittee members. submlts reports to plannln8 authoTltie5. As a 8eneral rule, the Society's ￿mMentS refer to the
Ilkely Impacl of any new development. paying partiwlar attention to appllcations whlch a￿ located In the conservallon
area. The Soclety has always made swdal efforts to brin8 108ether the communlty and local pollcy makers throu8h
partldpatlon In publlc meelin8s and presentatlons and It Is hoped to tontlnue this In the future. Thanks are due to the
Sodety's archltertural team of Ed Thuell Itrusteel and Peter Rlddln8ton lathlserl.

Thls 1$ led by its Chalrman. Robin Bvrnett, and Its co-ordinator. Chris Wlley. Whllst Its prtmary focus Is on preparlng the
town's entry In the An8lla In Bloom and Ilf posslblel the Brltaln In Bl¢)om annual campalgns. It also has a key role In
stlmulatlng and malntalnln8 publlc Interest In the town. The An8lla In Bloom ludglngcrlterla now places more emphasi5
on con5ervJtion arKI environmental sustainabllity and thi5 year the SOc￿￿s actlvbtles have been adapted to support
these alms.
A number of partly completed projects have been taken ferward In 202>24: these Indude the complètlon of the
ralnwater harvestln8 inltiative to provlde water for irri8aiin8 hanglng baskets. planters etc. Some earlier proleas.
Indudlng the 'wSllow crown, and 'crownln8 ￿Or￿ were completed along wlth the crown celebratlng Klng Charles Ill's
coronatlon.
The Green Flngers Scheme which en¢ourages ¢omrnunity partlcipation In small hortlcultural proleus was also
contlnued during 2023. This is aimed ai younger and older member5 of the Commun￿ and culmlnated wlth a
well-attended presentatlon at the Athenaeum In Autumn 2023.
The Certificate of Merlt Scheme in which NrlunteerjudBes review all the front gardens in Bury and award certrflcates of
commendation where appropriate. continued to be very popular with feedback showlng contlnued 5UPPOrt for this
stheme and Its place In'nudglng, an imprO￿￿ent In the urban landscape of the town. Our thanks go to Flona Mll and
Lynne Wrlght. the respectlve volunteer coordlnators of these two schemes, tO8ether with their very many helpers.
The Society entered Anglia in Bloom in 2023 and won another Bold award in the Large Town and City Centre category.

4.0 UNKS TO OTHER ORGANISATIONS
In compliance wlth its objectives, the Society maintains relationships with many other local charitie5, schoo15, and
comrnunity-based organlsatlons. These Include the Bury Water Meadows Group, the Suffolk Preservation Society, The
Bury St Edmunds Town Guldes. Moyse's Hall Museum. the Friends of the Abbey Gardens, the Bury Past and Present
Society, the Churchgate Area Association. and the Bury St Edmunds Heritage Trust IGuildhalll. This may invofve the
makin8 of small 8rants or prowidin8 speakers for events held by them if requested.
Aiong wfjth West Suffolk Councll. St Edmund5bury Cathedral and Bury St Edmund5 Town Councll, the Society is a
member of the Abbey of St Edmunds Heritage Partnerthlp which has been set up to care for. conserve and enhance
the Abbey Preclncts. its alm is to help people to understand the internatlonal slgnificance of St Edmvnd and of the
hlstork Abbey founded In hi$ name.

7.0 FINANCIAL REVIEW

financial p051tion of the Soaety. They are alx) responsible for safeguardlng the assets of the Soclety and frjr ta￿n& the

The Trustees are also reswnsible for preparlng the Trurteès, Annual Report and Flnandal Statements In accordance
with applicable baw and accepted United Klngdom ￿￿O￿ntIng Standards.
7.2 Hnandal Posltlon at 31 Marth 2024
The financial ststements, Indudlng the Independent Examiner's Report for the year to 31 March 2024 are attached to
thls report. As already mentloned in note 2.2.1 above. the Trustee5 believe that any rlsks relating to the reliability of

The Dr Rae Bequest fund represents the bequesl of the late Dr Allson Rae, to be used for local Prolects whether
of creatlon ry preservatlon In or near the town centre of Bury St Edmund&
The Bury In Woom fund represents sponsorship and other r￿ipts for the Bury in Bloom campaign. These
funds are used for the maintenance and Improvement of roundabouts. flowerbeds and planters wlthln the
control of West Suffolk Councll and Bury St Edmunds Town Council together wlth a range of communlty
proje¢t5. They also provide workinB capital for activities suth as the provlslon of hanglng baskets where
expenditure may need to be incurred prior to the receipt of MatchIr￿ income.
