Love From Lucy - Trustees Annual Report for 2023
Our aims and purposes as a charity
Love From Lucy aims to help children and young ones up to the age of 21 years of age who have previously had a heart, liver, lung, pancreas, kidney or multi-organ transplant and go on to develop PostTransplant Lymphoproliferative Disorder (PTLD) by:
-
Helping to relieve the effects of undergoing chemotherapy
-
To providing items that will bring them joy while in a hospital bed
-
Provide them with vouchers to obtain their favourite food while in hospital
-
Clothing that will help ease their symptoms of the chemotherapy
-
Signpost their family to organisations that can give them support
-
Provide mental health therapy for the siblings of the cancer patient
-
To campaign for the right of every young person who has had a transplant to have regular blood tests to prevent PTLD from developing
What we planned to do to achieve our charitable objectives
When planning our activities for the year, the Trustees’ have considered the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit and have taken it into account when making a decision to which the guidance is relevant
For 2023 we discussed and planned the following objectives and activities to fulfil our aims.
-
To reach out to the public to fundraise for the charity by taking part in the Dorset Plane Pull
-
Take part in the Ellingham Show by selling merchandise and informing the public of the effects of Post-Transplant Lymphoproliferative Disorder (PTLD)
-
To update the website to make it more appealing to those visiting it
-
Continue to spread Lucy’s message by encouraging shop owners to put a poster in their window
-
To compile a leaflet explaining PTLD, where the patient and their families can get help and support, how to donate to the charity or set up a monthly donation and to distribute it to hospitals

Financial Review
Incoming and outgoing resources
The total receipts on general unrestricted funds received were £412 and are detailed in the Financial Report.
2023 was a disappointing fundraising year. We very sadly didn’t have enough support to do the Dorset Plane Pull so lost our deposit. We were grateful for the donation from Dorset Plane Pull giving us a share of their donations from 2022 and a small donation via Easyfundraising. The entrants who had paid to take part in the Dorset Plane Pull 2023 were refunded their money through their bank accounts.
A dearly beloved trustee was suffering mental trauma due to losing someone to PTLD. They obtained funding from Abby’s Heroes, another local charity, for counselling sessions but this was coming to an end. A discussion took place with the remaining Trustees’ and volunteers as to whether it would be appropriate to use Love From Lucy funds to fund the counsellor for ongoing treatment. There was a resounding yes, on the basis that we needed this particular Trustee to be fit and well, both physically and mentally, to be able to carry on helping to run the charity. More harm than good would have resulted if the Trustee had to resign. This was a unique case and the same decision would not have applied to the other Trustees’ or volunteers. This has proved invaluable. The counsellor has become a trusted source for Love From Lucy to engage with. We now feel confident that this counsellor will be able to work well with the siblings of patients with PTLD.
A decision was also made to close down the JustGiving page as it was costing the Charity £18 per month with no deposits being made.
We, sadly, were too late to organise a stall at the Ellingham Show so this is the aim for 2024.
The leaflet is being compiled, the charity is struggling to get the balance of information and pictures correct. There has to be a positive message in the leaflet but at the same time the patient and parents need informative information.
Staff Costs
The Charity makes no payments for staff; the Trustees’ and volunteers do not get paid for the work they do.
Trustee payments and expenses
There were no payments to persons related to or connected to the Trustees for expenses but a Trustee did benefit from a provision provided by the charity.
Why we hold no money in reserve
The charity is unable to have a reserve at this time due to the funds being very small. The charity will look to try and maintain a balance on the general unrestricted funds which equates to at least three months’ unrestricted payments as contingency against unforeseen situations. At present, the unrestricted funds are kept under regular review.
Structure, governance and management of the Charity
Love From Lucy is a Constitute Incorporated Organisation and has a Constitution governing document.
A Trustee must have regard to the skills, knowledge and experience needed for the effective administration of the CIO. Every charity trustee must be a natural person and be over the age of 16 years. The Trustee is made aware that it is an unpaid volunteer role.
3
The charity trustees will make available to each new charity trustee, on or before his or her first appointment:
-
(a) a copy of the current version of this constitution; and
-
(b) a copy of the CIO’s latest Trustees’ Annual Report and statement of accounts.
-
(c) Training courses will be available for all Trustees.
-
(d) We are always looking for new Trustees and try to ensure a balance of skills and experience where possible.
