Objectives and Activities

SORP
reference
Summary of the purposes of
the charity as set out in its
governing document
Para 1.17 (i)
Providing emergency food, essential toiletries
and household items to individuals and families
in need, and/or for distribution by charities and
other organisations working to prevent or relieve
poverty.
(ii)
Such other means including (but not limited to)
the provision of support or signposting to
relevant information and other advisory services.
Summary of the main
activities in relation to those
purposes for the public
benefit, in particular, the
activities, projects or
services identified in the
accounts.
Para 1.17 and
1.19
We are an independent foodbank run as a not-for-profit
charity. We provide essential food, toiletries, baby food and
nappies as well as some household products such as
clothes washing powder.
The majority of people who we support are people from the
local area of Sketty Park, which is one of the most deprived
areas in Swansea; we also provide food parcels for people
in crisis in Townhill, Mayhill, Brynmill and other local areas.
We will take referrals from agents throughout Swansea as
long as they are collected from us.We offer support outside
this area, including to refugees and asylum seekers. Sketty
Foodbank opens to the public on Wednesday of each week,
with the exception of Christmas and New Year, when we
open on another suitable day.
We are run by a dedicated team of volunteers with no paid
employees. Most of the people who use us are referred by
agencies such as SASS, Unity in Diversity, Pobl, Probation
officers, LA Housing Department Employment Support
workers, Local Area Coordinators, Citizen’s Advice and
Local Schools and colleges. We are seeing an increase in
single young adults being referred to us. We also have a
number of people who just walk in without referrals.Where
appropriate, we work with other Foodbanks and have very
good relationships with numerous support agencies.
Statement confirming
whether the trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public
benefit
Para 1.18 The trustees are aware of the Charity Commission’s
guidance on public benefit and ensure that we comply with
this guidance.

Achievements and Performance

SORP
reference
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 In difficult economic times with many financial pressures
upon individuals and families, and against a backdrop of
limited financial resources available from governmental
departments, Sketty Foodbank has provided vital support to
those in urgent need.
In addition to emergency food and essentials, we have
provided toiletries and household items and endeavoured to
maintain the dignity of those who call upon our services. We
seek to provide a ‘hand up’ rather than a ‘handout’ to our
beneficiaries and, wherever possible, signpost them to other
organisations and agencies who can offer other financial
support, training or education.
We have engaged with a number of support agencies
including health visitors, social workers, probation officers
and schools.
We have worked particularly closely with Swansea Asylum
Seeker Services, Unity and Diversity and local Councillors
in supporting refugees and asylum seekers, who often could
go hungry if it were not for the support we offer.
When the Foodbank was initially set up, approximately 50
referrals per month were being handled. At the end of this
reporting period, there were approximately 150 per month
made (similar to last year), with little evidence of any
potential drop in numbers.
We believe that the support offered by the Foodbank stops
many people fallingfurther intopoverty, or ill-health through

2

poor diets and may help to keep families together who may be struggling with day to day necessities.

Additional information (optional) You may choose to include further statements where relevant about:

Achievements against
objectives set
Para 1.41 By working with other agencies, we have seen beneficiaries
find work or other means of financial support to reduce
reliance on the Foodbank.
Performance of fundraising
activities against objectives
set
Para 1.41 We have been increasingly successful in raising funds from
corporate donors as a result of direct contact with them.
This has reduced our reliance on Council funding, although
we have been successful in applying for grants for specific
projects, such as food provision for families over school
holiday periods.
Local businesses and organisations have occasionally also
sent teams of volunteers to help with various aspects of the
Foodbank’s work, such as picking and packing parcels, and
leaflet delivery to the local area to inform people of our
services.
We are fortunate to have also benefited from generous
donations of items from large supermarkets and other local
stores.

Financial Review
Review of the charity’s
financial position at the end
of the period
Para 1.21 Trustees have reviewed the financial position of the Charity
and are satisfied that it is in a relatively strong place with
sufficient funds to continue operating for a year if all sources
of funding ceased
Statement explaining the
policy for holding reserves
stating why they are held
Para 1.22 While the charity does not have a formal reserves policy,
the trustees hold sufficient funds to cover operational costs
for a year should funding sources dry up completely. We do
continually reviews it resources against its projected needs.

Para 1.22 Not applicable
Details of fund materially in
deficit
Para 1.24 None
Explanation of any
uncertainties about the
charity continuing as a going
concern
Para 1.23 While ongoing government (local and national) funding is
not assured, we do have enough to see us through a year’s
operation at current levels. Should there be a drastic
reduction, the Trustees will have to limit the number of
beneficiaries and/or reduce the range of item supplied to
them.
