The Purpose of What Next
To raise public awareness and provide opportunities for public engagement in issues relating to the climate and ecological emergency through a diverse range of events, activities and projects.
The Objects of What Next
To promote the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment in the Borough of Waverley for the public benefit of its residents and the wider community by raising awareness and providing information on climate and ecological issues, working collaboratively with other environmental groups, and educating the public, local business and other local bodies on the impact and mitigation of, as well as adaptation to, climate and ecological changes.

We also work with local groups and public sector organisa@ons, including the Godalming Climate Forum, Godalming Library, Godalming Town Council, Waverley Borough Council, local schools and colleges.
Structure and Opera;on
As a micro-charity, we have no formal opera@onal structure. The Chair of Trustees, Dr. David Faraday, has undertaken the administra@on of the charity and, with the assistance of other trustees and members, co-ordinates / manages the charity’s volunteers as required. Specific events and ac@vi@es are ini@ated, organised and managed by individual volunteers, in consulta@on with the trustees; they draw upon the charity’s volunteer and support base to run these ac@vi@es.
Since October 2022, the charity has been opera@ng on a ‘pop-up’ using facili@es and hiring venues from other community groups / public bodies as the need arises. This con@nues to be a successful and sustainable model, and has been a catalyst for developing strong links with other community groups and service providers. What Next volunteers meet on a weekly basis in Godalming Library and work with Surrey County Council librarians to organise our Library of Things; storage for our items is provided by Waverley Brough Council and Godalming Town Council provided our display cabinet. We hire a local venue, the Denningberg Centre, for our bi-monthly Climate Club mee@ngs from Waverley Borough Council; the council also gives us addi@onal use of the venue every Wednesday. We also organise events in the Godalming Museum.

Art Exhibi*on : Earth Sprites Emerging exhibi@on in the Godalming Museum (four week exhibi:on, 14[th] May to 8[th] June, Project Leader: Shirley Faraday).

Climate Acon Negoa*on Workshops : for local schools and colleges (5 workshops, Project Leader: David Faraday).

Climate Club : fortnightly sessions open to the public with a shared ‘planetarian supper’ and a discussion based around a specific environmental theme (20 mee:ngs, Project Leader: Rieks Drijver).

Eco-theatre Group : wri@ng original scripts, and crea@ng characters and costumes for themed street theatre and puppet shows (~10 regular crea:ve sessions, Project Leader: Shirley Faraday).

HEAT Project : as part of the Home Energy Wardrobe Warriors in the Library Advice Taskforce , co-ordinated by Zero Carbon Guildford, our volunteers conduct home energy advice surveys for residents of Waverley Borough (~25 surveys between November 2024 and March 2025, Project Leader: David Faraday).

Library of Things : launched in October 2023 our library now has more than 300 members (an expansion from 160 in 2024) with 105 items to borrow (an expansion from 50 in 2024). We are based in Godalming Library with storage provided by Waverley Borough Council (on-going, throughout the year, Project Leaders: Jeremy Snell and David Faraday).

‘Rubbish’ Puppet Theatre : last year’s show, ‘Nolene and the Rescue Hens’ , was performed in our street theatre puppet stage made en@rely from waste materials (7 performances, Project Leader: Shirley Faraday).

Wardrobe Warriors : monthly sessions in the library showing members of the public how to use the sewing machines (available from the Library of Things) to mend their clothing (11 sessions, Project Leader: Jackie Drijver).

What Next Wednesdays : weekly ecosupport sessions, open to the public and now hosted in Godalming Library (weekly sessions throughout the year, with some breaks, Project Leader: David Faraday).

The What Next Lounge & Puppet Theatre

What Next for Wildlife in Waverley : launched in May 2024, we organised a series of Wildlife Walks of the Lammas Lands[1] which were a`ended by 70+ members of the public (4 public walks, Project Leaders: Neil Willis and David Faraday).

Our Climate Club , which has been mee@ng fortnightly since December 2021[2] , has con@nued to be an enduring and inspiring ac@vity. These public events act as support, advice and educa@onal forums and cover a wide range of topics. There is also a strong community element to these mee@ngs, par@cipants bring and share food which is prepared on the principles of a ‘planetarian’ diet (see above) and the discussions are facilitated to ensure that all par@cipants have the opportunity to contribute.

We have con@nued to run our Climate Acon Negoa*on Workshops , using the EnROADS[3] global climate simulator from Climate Interac@ve[4] . We run these workshops for local school and college students in collabora@on with Waverley Borough Council who provide the council chambers as the venue for these nego@a@ons. In the last year, more than 160 students have par@cipated in these workshops and we were delighted to have local councillors join us at these events.
benefit from running these workshops, specific examples of individuals changing their behaviour or being inspired to influence others have been shared with us anecdotally. We have also been asked to run addi@onal workshops for other groups both within Waverley and beyond.
In October 2023, we launched our Library of Things . This is a collabora@ve project with Godalming Library providing ‘front-of-house’ service, issuing and collec@ng items, Waverley Borough Council providing storage for our items and What Next volunteers organising the actual library, including on-line booking and stock management, transfers of items and maintenance / PAT tes@ng. As of March 2025, we have 105 items in our library, 85% of which have been donated by local residents. We now have 300+ members who have engaged in 214[5] loans over the last 12 months with 52% of our items being borrowed at least once. We have engaged in a partnership with Surrey Wildlife Trust to make eight wildlife recording kits available through our Library of Things; the kits provided are: a Bat Detector, a Mini-beasts Recording Kit, a Moth Trap, a Plant Recording Kit, a Pond Life Recording Kit, a Small Mammals Recording Kit, a Soil Tes@ng Kit and a Trial Camera. On a similar basis, we have also engaged in a partnership with Ac@ve Surrey to make sports equipment available. We now have twelve sports items: a Bocce Set, a Boccia Set, a Bean Boccia Set, a Badminton Set, two Basket Balls (different sizes), two Cricket sets (different sizes), a The arrival of Surrey Wildlife Trust’s Wildlife Recording Kits at our Library of Things, immediately prior to one of our Wildlife Walks of Rounders Set, Swingball, a Table the Lammas Lands Tennis set and four pairs of Walking Poles.

There are no fees or deposits required to join our Library of Things and members can borrow items at no charge. We have seen a steady and sustained level of engagement from the local community over the first eighteen months of opera@on and have received many posi@ve comments from members of the public concerning this project. There is a clear public benefit in the provision of this service and it aligns strongly with our stated objec@ves (see above).
As part of a project originated and co-ordinated by our friends at Zero Carbon Guildford, volunteers from What Next took part in the HEAT (Home Energy Advice Taskforce) Project . Three addi@onal What Next volunteers were trained as home energy surveyors, with some of last year’s volunteers stepping down, the training included the use of thermal imaging cameras for helping to assess energy loss. Over the two years we have been involved in this project, our volunteers have conducted almost 100 surveys for residents across Waverley. Our newest project, What Next for Wildlife in Waverley was launched on Friday 10[th] May at one of our Climate Club sessions. For our first wildlife walk we had more than 35 people join us for a ‘safari’ in Caeshall Meadow, part of the Lammas Lands in Godalming. The Lammas Lands have been the ini@al focus of this project, a goldmine of biodiversity in the heart of Godalming, they are also – as a flood meadow - an important carbon sink. We organised three further wildlife walks in the Spring and Summer of 2024, on each occasion arac@ng around a dozen eager explores of all ages.
Finally, as in previous years, the ac@vi@es of the Eco-theatre Group cannot go unmen@oned. The group created their ‘Rubbish’ Puppet Theatre in 2022, a puppet theatre made (almost) en@rely of discarded objects and materials, and last year’s produc@on of ‘Nolene and the Rescue Hens’ was The What Next, Eco-Theatre Group’s ‘Rubbish’ Puppet Theatre wrien specifically to highlight issues around Presents sustainable transport. Over the last 12 months we have had a turnover of £2,972.00. We have received £671.00 in dona@ons and £825.00 in revenue, but no grant income; outgoings have totalled £2,972.00. We have £5,353.10 in our bank account.
Our Reserves Policy is based on covering insurance costs maintaining our core ac@vity, the Climate Club, for a three-six month period; our reserve level is set at £1,500. The trustees are confident that the charity is in a good financial posi@on for the next financial year.

Governing Document
What Next is controlled by its governing document, which is its Cons@tu@on dated 25th November, 2021. The cons@tu@on has remained unchanged since it was approved. The Cons@tu@on is that of a Charitable Incorporated Organisa@on with vo@ng members other than its charity Trustees.
Governing Body
As the charity has no share capital, no Trustee or Director has any interest in any shares in the charity. The business of the charity is managed by the Trustees, including the Chair and the Treasurer.
Two trustees, David Faraday and Robert Oulton, stepped down and were duly re-elected as trustees in accordance with our cons@tu@on. A new trustee, Cinzia Fontana, was iden@fied and provisionally appointed subject to the relevant informa@on being submi`ed to and approved by the charity commission.
Membership of What Next is open to everyone; there is a one-@me membership fee of £1. Membership was extended free of charge to members of the What Next founding group, those individuals involved in the establishment of the charity, but not serving as trustees. Members can resign at any point. All members aending the AGM or other General Mee@ngs have a vote on the appointment of Trustees, the approval of the Trustees Annual Report and Accounts and any other maers arising at the AGM / GM that require a vote.

Recruitment and Training of Trustees
