Trustees Annual Report
To year end 31[st] March 2023
The Purpose of What Next
To raise public awareness and provide opportunities for public engagement in issues relating to the climate and ecological emergency through a diverse range of events, activities and projects.
The Objects of What Next
To promote the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment in the Borough of Waverley for the public benefit of its residents and the wider community by raising awareness and providing information on climate and ecological issues, working collaboratively with other environmental groups, and educating the public, local business and other local bodies on the impact and mitigation of, as well as adaptation to, climate and ecological changes.
to have regard to the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit. What Next seeks to raise awareness in residents of Godalming and, where feasible, throughout Waverley of the urgent challenges we are facing with respect to the climate and ecological emergency. Our inten@on is to engage and educate residents, encouraging them to take ac@on in mi@ga@ng and adap@ng to the climate and ecological emergency. We also work with local groups and public sector organisa@ons, including the Godalming Climate Forum, Godalming Library, Godalming Town Council, Waverley Borough Council, local schools and colleges.
Structure and Opera;on
As a micro-charity, we have no formal opera@onal structure. The Chair of Trustees, Dr. David Faraday, has undertaken the administra@on of the charity and co-ordinates / manages the charity’s volunteers as required. Specific events and ac@vi@es are ini@ated, organised and managed by individual volunteers, in consulta@on with the trustees; they draw upon the charity’s volunteer and support base to run these ac@vi@es.
From November 2021 un@l September 2022[1] , the charity was based in a premises[2] near to Godalming High Street. Shirley Faraday, a member of the charity, acted as an informal venue manager throughout this period. Over this period the charity ran more than forty events and ac@vi@es in this venue. In September 2022, due to a change in the business circumstances for the landlord, we had to vacate this venue. Since then, the charity has been opera@ng on a pop-up basis working in collabora@on with other local chari@es and the local councils. Although ini@ally challenging, this has steadily proven to be a sustainable opera@ng model and it is an@cipated that the charity will con@nue in this model in the medium-term.
1 Prior to our founda,on, we occupied this venue since July 2022.
2 11 Wharf Street, Godalming.

[3] include the following:
In May 2022, we were honoured to be selected as the Mayor of Godalming’s charity for 2022/23 . This provided us with an opportunity to run more ambi@ous fund-raising events than we would have otherwise afempted. The Mayor’s Quiz stands out as a notable event, afrac@ng more than 80 people, this event provided us with a fantas@c opportunity to raise awareness. We achieved this through a crea@vely researched set of ques@ons and a novel scoring system based on carbonemissions; we believe that there is lifle no doubt that the members of the public who afended leg the event with a significantly enhanced understanding of the average carbon footprint in Godalming. More generally, our term as the Mayor’s charity, has provided us with a great plahorm for raising public awareness of the climate crisis and ecological emergency.
Our Climate Club has been mee@ng fortnightly since December 2021[4] and it has proven to be an enduring and inspiring ac@vity. These public events act as support, advice and educa@onal forums

and cover a wide range of topics. There is also a strong community element to these mee@ngs, par@cipants bring and share food which is prepared on the principles of a ‘planetarian’ diet (see above) and the discussions are facilitated to ensure that all par@cipants have the opportunity to contribute. Here are some of the topics we have addressed to date:

Our Climate Club
Our Climate Ac*on Workshops for the general public, along with our Climate Acon Negoa*on Workshops for school and college students in Waverley, are another significant achievement. The former has afracted a wide-range of individuals from the climate curious to climate ac@vists, all of whom would have leg the workshops with an enhanced understanding of what is most impachul in mi@ga@ng climate change. The lafer, nego@a@on workshops, have been organised in collabora@on with Waverley Borough Council and were held in the council chambers; three of the events were chaired by the Mayor of Godalming. More than 150 students have taken part in these workshops some of which were also afended in part by local councillors. We believe that there has been significant public benefit from running these workshops, specific examples of individuals changing their behaviour or being inspired to influence others have been shared with us anecdotally. We have also been asked to run addi@onal workshops for other groups both within Waverley and beyond.
Climate Acon Negoa*on Workshops in Waverley Borough Council Chambers
The ac@vi@es of our Eco-theatre Group have also been notable. Their first produc@on: ‘Everybird goes to COP’ was presented in Godalming High Street on the middle weekend of COP26 and created a fantas@c plahorm for announcing the existence of What Next in Waverley. It also introduced the What Next Earth Sprites to the ci@zens of Godalming and they have been a recurring presence in various shows and ac@vi@es ever since. More recently, the group have turned their afen@on to their ‘Rubbish’ Puppet Theatre, a puppet theatre made (almost) en@rely of discarded objects and materials, with their produc@on of ‘The Green Lead Awards’ which was performed at the Godalming Green Gala. This group provides a unique plahorm for entertaining, informing and influencing the ci@zens of Godalming.
