Trustees Report
We present the first Annual Report from Planet Earth Games Trust. It has been a transitional and transformative period for the charity. With the closure of Devon Youth Games Trust and the asset transfer to our new entity Planet Earth Games Trust, we have the foundations in place to realise our mission of “inspiring people to live active and sustainable lives through the power of sport and physical activity.”
Our organisational growth from a regional body to a national leader in sustainable sport is best reflected in the partner organisations we are entrusted to work with. We were contracted by Youth Sport Trust, the UK’s foremost sports charity for young people to develop sustainable strategy and operations across the School Games network, which reaches 2.5m young people every academic year.
We helped create a new “Eco-Friendly” value for the School Games programme, trained 450 School Games Organisers in sustainable sport delivery and created a young leaders’ module for local delivery.
The scale and impact of work earned Planet Earth Games Trust a national prestigious award; we collected the Education Award at Chelsea FC at the British Sustainable Sport Awards in October 2023. The work also gave our charity some unrestricted income to work with and employ Chris Broadbent as the charity’s Chief Executive.
Additionally, we have built a rewarding relationship with the Association of Colleges Sport embedding Planet Earth Games within the further education experience across the UK for thousands of young learners aged 16-19.
We piloted the concept in January 2022 and have expanded the concept in 2022/23 with a three- month activity window where students were empowered as their College’s Climate Champions and given an “event in a box” to inspire activities on campus on in their community. A well as delivering environmental and wellbeing outcomes, it has helped young people develop confidence and leadership skills.
We will report on the outcomes in next year’s Annual Report, but already we have seen the scale of participation is around 15,000 young people.
Our credibility for delivery has also been recognised with the successful grant awards from the Postcode Lottery and London Marathon Foundation. These awards will enable us to activate two significant projects the Board has prioritised.
Firstly, launching our new digital platform to enable us to have a deeper and broader impact in community, education, and workplace settings by effectively using gamification to drive positive behaviour change for wellbeing and environmental sustainability.
Secondly, to launch a plogging programme, targeting deprived communities and helping meet organisational priorities around physical activity and climate action.
Internally, we have benefitted from strong stability. I was delighted to be appointed as the new Chair after the departure of Andrew Cross in February 2023. Along with Chris, Andrew has been a brilliant leader in the organisation’s upward trajectory in recent years and his contribution will be long remembered.
Our talented board was further bolstered with the arrival of Jess Fidler, former Head of Sustainability at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. Jess brings a wealth of relevant experience in sustainability and best practice and is a further example of our charity’s relevance and scalable potential.
It has been a year of huge progress, but also one in which the organisation is now in a strong position to exploit the increasing opportunities now and in the future in the innovative space of sustainable sport.
Sarah Halhead-Baker, Chair on behalf of the Board of Trustees

Planet Earth Games Trust Accountant's Report For The Period Ended 31 March 2023
Independent examiner’s report to the trustees of Planet Earth Games Trust
I report on the accounts of the CIO for the period ended 31 March 2023, which are set out on pages 3 to 5.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
-
examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act
-
to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act
-
to state whether particular matters have come to my attention
Basis of independent examiner’s report
My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the next statement.
Independent examiner’s statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
-
(1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:
-
to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act and
-
to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act have not been met or
-
(2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached

1.3. Expenditure Recognition
Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that settlement will be required and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably.
