The trustees present their annual report and financial statements for the year ended 31 March 2024

Structure, governance and management

The Mrs Sardar Saied Charitable Trust commenced its operations on 19/10/2021 following the adoption of its constitution and was registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) with the Charity Commission, charity registration number 1196208

Trustees in 2024:

Our charity is governed by a board of trustees responsible for overseeing grant distribution, financial management, and compliance with charity regulations. The Trustees do not receive any remuneration for their work as Trustees.

Dr Faisal Awan (Chairperson)

Mr M B N Butt (Treasurer)

Dr Afshan Butt (Secretary)

Our operations comply with the Charity Commission's guidelines and continue to seek ways to improve governance and transparency.

Objectives and Activities

Our charity was established to honour the legacy of our late aunt, who had a lifelong commitment to financially supporting disadvantaged students, with a focus on medicine and engineering.

She bequeathed an endowment donation in her estate. She wished for this capital to be invested, with the returns allocated to providing grants for disadvantaged undergraduate students.

As the endowment amount is small, we wanted to preserve the principal sum. We had engaged with an investor provider. However, after further review, we decided that the returns were too small. We have, however, identified another investment and are in the process of proceeding with this fund in the next financial year.

Based on this, we could not make financial grants this year. However, we have identified a bursary program and will donate to it in the next financial year.

Grant making policy

We have revised our policy and intend to focus on donating to established educational institutions that possess a strong system for vetting applicants and providing grants directly. This decision arises from our current lack of resources to implement this; however, we may contemplate opening direct applications in the future.

Funding priorities

We aim to support underprivileged university students in the UK. We have decided to assist those pursuing degrees in medicine or engineering, as this was a particular wish of our late aunt.

Financial review

As outlined, we opted to retain the endowment donation amount until a suitable investment can be identified; therefore, no grants were issued in this financial year. A summary is attached at the end of the report.

Plans for future periods

  1. We have identified an investment for the endowment and plan to proceed with it in the next financial year.

  2. We have reached out to Imperial College London, which offers small grants to students, and we plan to donate £10,000 in the next financial year to support two students throughout the year.
