For the year ended 31 March 2023

The trustees present their annual report and financial statements for the year ended 31 March 2023

Structure, governance and management

The Mrs Sardar Saied Charitable Trust commenced its operations on 19/10/2021 following the adoption of its constitution and was registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) with the Charity Commission, charity registration number 1196208

Trustees in 2023:

Our charity is governed by a board of trustees responsible for overseeing grant distribution, financial management, and compliance with charity regulations. The Trustees do not receive any remuneration for their work as Trustees.

Dr Faisal Awan (Chairperson)

Mr M B N Butt (Treasurer)

Dr Afshan Butt (Secretary)

Our operations comply with the Charity Commission's guidelines and continue to seek ways to improve governance and transparency.

Objectives and Activities

Our charity was recently established to honour the legacy of our late aunt. She had a lifelong commitment to helping financially support disadvantaged students.

To continue this worthy cause, she left an endowment donation in her estate. She wanted this capital invested and the returns used to provide grants to disadvantaged undergraduate students.

We could not provide these grants this financial year due to several factors. The volatility of the financial markets and strict investment criteria prevented us from finding suitable investment projects. We had considered various options, including more considerable endowment funds, but after due diligence, we concluded they were too risky for this financial year.

Grant making policy

We have a grant-making policy alongside an application process that allows applicants to apply directly to the charity.

Funding priorities

We strive to assist underprivileged university students in the UK. We may offer funding directly or through UK-based educational institutions that have an established system for identifying eligible candidates.

Financial review

As outlined, we chose to preserve the endowment donation amount until a suitable investment can be identified; hence, no grants were given in this financial year. A summary is attached at the end of the report.

Plans for future periods

  1. Concentrate on identifying a suitable investment vehicle that will safeguard the capital and yield sufficient returns to fund these grants.

  2. Establish a procedure to assess the financial background of applicants.

  3. Collaborate with established institutions and explore the possibility of providing funding via these organisations.
