EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE REPORT
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2023
The Child Psychotherapy Council (CPC) Executive Committee present their report and accounts for the period 1 January 2023 to 31 December 2023.
Objectives and Activities
Purposes of the Charity
The Child Psychotherapy Council (CPC), represents the profession of child psychotherapy across all modalities in the UK and beyond. It is dedicated to the advancement of child psychotherapy as a distinct profession within the field of child and adolescent mental health.
The organisation was founded in 2021 by a group of child psychotherapists, united by the idea of creating a real change in the field of child and adolescent psychotherapy.
As a registered charity (Charity Number 1196150), the Child Psychotherapy Council engages with practitioners, training organisations, regulators, policy makers, statutory and non-statutory mental health organisations for children, young people, families and the general public. The CPC’s goal is to promote and maintain the highest standards of psychotherapeutic services for children and young people. Ensuring that only the highest quality, most developmentally appropriate mental health services are offered to children and their families – both privately and in the public sector.

-
Promoting rigorous standards for training and continuing professional development
-
Establishing a body of best practice principles, ethics and guidelines to be adhered to by practitioners and researchers
-
• Lobbying for funding and improved mental health services for children and young people
-

The charity operates throughout England and Wales.
Achievements and performance
The inaugural launch of the CPC took place on 16 June 2023 with a seminar held at Resource for London in Islington This was attended by over 40 practitioners in the field of child and adolescent psychotherapy. Workshops were held on a variety of subjects, including The Child Psychotherapist in Private Practice, Child Psychotherapy in Outside Spaces, Child Identity Formation in a Changing World and Assessment in Child Psychotherapy. The Seminar gave participants the opportunity to learn more about the aims of the CPC and an opportunity to network with other child psychotherapists.
The following categories of membership have been created:
-
Individual Accredited Membership for Child Psychotherapists.
-
Trainee Membership for trainees on a recognised child psychotherapy training, seeing children and/or young people as part of their clinical placement,
-
Student Membership for those attending a training in psychotherapy or counselling and not yet working with clients
4
-
Non-Clinical Membership: for qualified child psychotherapists not currently in clinical practice
-
Co-opted Membership: for those elected by members of the Executive Board to fulfil a specific function or role in CPC. Coopted Members may not be a Child Psychotherapist but will have a set of skills and achievements related to the field.
-
Honorary Membership: Those nominated by a CPC member in recognition of their contribution to the field of child psychotherapy.
CPC endeavours to ensure that every accredited member meets the highest standards of professionalism for Child Psychotherapy enforcing rigorous standards including a minimum of 4 years part-time training focussed on child and adolescent psychotherapy and practice; training with a recognised child and adolescent psychotherapy training organisation delivered at least at the level 7 of competence (UK level of MA) and appropriately supervised clinical practice and observation studies.
There are further robust standards for Trainee and Student members covering professional training, clinical practice, learning outcomes, clinical supervision and professional practice
Financial Review
CPC organised the inaugural launch on 16 June 2023. The launch aimed to make CPC known within the child psychotherapy community in order to attract future members and raise awareness of future seminars and CPD events that will help fund the charity. As written before, the launch was a success, and we were able to hold the launch without a financial loss.
The launch has created interest for membership – however, only one new membership was finalised by the time December 2023. In the future, memberships have the potential to be a steady source of income for 2024. Furthermore, CPC has received several small donations from the current board members to set up and enlarge CPC’s email account and correspondence.
On the December 31[st] , CPC closed the books with a small financial gain of £286.69. Currently, the financial income is used to expand the online presence and services of CPC.
As CPC has not yet established a regular cash flow, no reserves were generated. This needs to be addressed in 2024 and possibilities to raise funds need to be explored.
