Trustees Annual Report for Ascot Shed, Charity No. 1196147

For Period: 13[th] October 2021 to 31[st] March 2023

First Trustees

Hamilton Ford (Chairman) Dalwinder Sidhu David PuA (Treasurer) Paul Gibbinson (also Trustee of Hounslow Men’s Shed)

Summary of Progress

We announced our intenGon to set up a Men’s Shed in Ascot on the UK Men’s Sheds AssociaGon (UKMSA) web site in early 2021 and soon met local resident David PuA, who came with prior experience of running a non-profit in the borough. David’s energy and experGse was instrumental, establishing Ascot Shed as a Charitable Incorporated OrganisaGon (CIO) and helping to prepare Surrey House for public visitaGon. He and Paul Gibbinson were natural choices for ‘First Trustees’, Paul having provided the inspiraGon and early guidance.

Many of our first members joined because Ascot Shed was sGll “in development”, providing an opportunity to physically contribute and have a say in the direcGon of the organisaGon. In February 2022 a half-dozen founding members volunteered ‘membership fees’ to provide funds for day-to-day expenses and also to buy a second-hand CO2 Laser CuZng Machine and a PAT Tester, seZng an ambiGous and professional tone for the future.

ConGnuing to rely on UKMSA as the primary adverGsement for Ascot Shed has proven effecGve because prospecGve members already understand and idenGfy with the ‘Shedder’ mentality, resulGng in a high conversion rate and a good fit with our exisGng team. Our ranks have grown steadily over the past 18 months and aAendance levels now rival long-established Sheds, with mulGple members visiGng every day.

Tremendous progress has been made refurbishing Surrey House, thanks to this collaboraGve effort and collecGve vision, resulGng in a well-used kitchen & dining area, and a very capable computer & electronics laboratory. The woodworking area, now in it’s third iteraGon, conGnues to be the busiest department.

Social engagement is paramount and our ‘Saturday Socials’ have proven popular with members, being a great way to bring everyone together irrespecGve of interest or ability. These also serve as informal Annual General MeeGngs.

Notable Events

3 woodworking workbenches were gi_ed to us by Hounslow Men’s Shed on day one and a couple of bench-top machines were donated by other Sheds in Berkshire and Surrey, when we visited them seeking inspiraGon and advice. Smaller tools and machines soon came in from members of the public having garage clear-outs.

In the Summer of 2022 we established a symbioGc relaGonship with Lock5, one of the event space providers to Ascot Racecourse. With their cooperaGon we were able to reclaim a large amount of used Gmber a_er Royal Ascot race week, conveniently reinforcing the sustainability goals of all three organisaGons. We plan to repeat the collaboraGon next year.

The old Heatherwood Hospital site yielded a surprise opportunity to obtain a large number of workshop-related items, such as heavy-duty workbenches, industrial shelving, a large drill press and several dust & fume extractor units. Clearing out the former maintenance department in August 2022 was an enormous job and we’re sGll sorGng through the various electrical and plumbing components recovered from the store room.

We’re immensely grateful to Ascot Fire Brigade Trust for covering our insurance premium. We’d also like to thank an early supporter, M.P., with whose donaGons we were able to buy new electrical cable, framing Gmber and sheet materials for the ‘Rec Room’ renovaGon.
