I NTRODUCTION FROM THE CHAIR
As Chair of Ekota, I am delighted to present our annual impact report, which highlights our organisation ’ s achievements and contributions over the past two years. Despite facing numerous challenges, our team has remained dedicated to our mission of supporting individuals and communities, fostering empowerment through sports, education, and connection.
I am extremely proud of our team's successful work in delivering a variety of activities throughout this period. Their contribution has been essential to our success and led to the organisation being awarded the prestigious Kings Award for voluntary services. It was an honour to go to the Tower of London and Buckingham Palace to receive the award on behalf of the organisation.
Our initiatives have included sports engagement, empowering women and girls through specialised projects, promoting physical activities, and advocating for sustainable transportation through our cycling projects. Our impact has been farreaching and transformative.
I would also like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to all the participants who have engaged with our activities and projects. Your dedication to creating a positive impact in your community is truly inspiring.
Our communities have been significantly affected by the ongoing impact of the challenges of the cost of living crisis. Issues such as loneliness, obesity, and financial pressures persist among the individuals we serve. Our work is therefore more crucial than ever. We have worked tirelessly to maximise our resources, collaborate with partners, and innovate our offerings to meet the changing needs of our community. One of our proudest achievements is securing capital grants to enhance the facilities at Goodmayes Park. This investment will improve the existing pavilion and create more opportunities for community engagement and participation in sports and recreational activities.
I am delighted to announce that Ekota's efforts have been acknowledged with awards for our grassroots work from the Essex Cricket Board and Redbridge Council. Additionally, our volunteers and coaches have been individually recognised, and we have expanded our reach globally through connections in Qatar and Morocco to share our knowledge and impact.
Our cafe hub sits at the heart of the community and is a thriving space for connection. Collaboration with partners and stakeholders remains central to achieving our future visions and goals.
Page 3
Looking ahead, I am excited about the opportunities that the upcoming year will bring. Together with our communities, we will continue to promote enjoyment, growth, and prosperity for all.
Thank you to all our supporters, funders, partners, beneficiaries, and stakeholders for your ongoing support and belief in our mission. Together, we are truly making a difference.
Sultana Rahman Chair, Ekota

In line with our mission to address pressing community challenges, Ekota is actively involved in tackling youth isolation and anti-social behavior through the transformative power of sports engagement. By offering opportunities for young people to participate in positive activities such as mentoring, coaching, and structured sports programmers, we aim to divert them from negative influences and towards pathways of personal growth and development. Our approach goes beyond physical activities; we also provide mental health support to help youth navigate the complexities of adolescence. Through these interventions, we strive to empower young individuals to overcome obstacles, build resilience, and realize their full potential within a supportive community environment.
Looking ahead, we remain dedicated to expanding our impact and reaching even more individuals in need. Through our initiatives in the London Borough of Redbridge, Barking & Dagenham, and Tower Hamlets, Ekota continues to inspire positive change and create a supportive environment where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
PROGRAMMES AND ACTIVITIES
IGNITING A PASSION FOR CRICKET
During summer, Ekota facilitated the English Cricket Board's All Stars and Dynamo Cricket programmes , catering to children aged 5-12, to foster cricket participation and ignite their passion for the sport. In 2023, Ekota played a pivotal role in the national launch of the programme, hosted at the Olympic Park in Stratford. Over the course of eight weeks, our dedicated volunteers and coaches led engaging sessions, introducing children to cricket through a series of enjoyable activities. With over 50 enthusiastic participants, including a notable number of girls, the programme proved immensely popular. Many of the children who initially joined have since become regular attendees at our ongoing cricket sessions, showcasing the effectiveness of these introductory programmes.
To mark the end of the Dynamo and All Stars programmes, Ekota organised a celebratory event at Goodmayes Park, attended by local council representatives. Participants were presented with certificates and medals in recognition of their achievements, providing an opportunity for parents and guardians to join in celebrating their children's accomplishments.

Ekota is deeply committed to promoting cricket, offering weekly sessions for girls and boys aged 5-14. Led by experienced male and female coaches , these sessions aim to foster participation, enjoyment, and skill development. With an average of over 60 participants, including both boys and girls from diverse backgrounds, these sessions have become a cornerstone of our community engagement efforts.
For those showing exceptional passion and talent, Ekota provides pathways to cricketing careers. Several participants have earned trials at regional cricket clubs, illustrating the success of our development programmers. Throughout the year, our young cricketers have participated in various tournaments, showcasing their skills and dedication. In September 2023, Ekota organized its inaugural under-11s tournament, attracting 10 teams from across London, a testament to the dedication of our volunteers and coaches.
In addition to our youth programmers, Ekota manages a men's league cricket, with eight teams competing in weekly matches that draws strong community support. Ekota's women ’ s cricket team has also achieved notable success, finishing second in their debut tournament. Comprising coaches and local community members with varying levels of experience, the team serves as a source of inspiration and empowerment for others.
Recognizing the importance of inclusivity and well-being, Ekota organizes walking cricket sessions tailored for older participants, aged 45-70. These sessions provide a fun and relaxed environment for individuals to enjoy cricket despite physical limitations.
Ekota's impact transcends local boundaries, as evidenced by invitations to international cricket events. Young participants had the privilege of acting as mascots during an international one-day cricket match, while two of our coaches were selected to ring the bell at prestigious international matches between Ireland and Bangladesh, highlighting Ekota's talent and community engagement efforts.
International Cricket Development Ekota has extended its cricketing outreach beyond local borders, as evidenced by a transformative visit to Morocco, where a number of Ekota representatives went to share their grassroots experience. In partnership with the English and Essex Cricket Boards, Ekota helped support the growth of youth cricket development initiatives in Morocco.

GRASSROOTS FOOTBALL AT EKOTA
At Ekota, football is more than just a game; it's a transformative tool that engages, inspires, and nurtures young minds while promoting physical fitness and mental well-being. Our football sessions, ranging from g rassroots training to structured league pathways, have become a cornerstone of our youth empowerment initiatives, capturing the hearts and minds of participants across age groups.

Recognising the importance of tailored support, participants are grouped into age-specific cohorts, ensuring each individual receives personalised attention and training suited to their needs.
Our Sunday sessions have emerged as a focal point of our programme, drawing an average attendance of over 60 enthusiastic individuals. The significant i ncrease in female participation and female coaches, inspired by the remarkable achievements of the Lionesses on the global stage, highlights the growing inclusivity and success of our initiatives.
Feedback from participants, parents, and guardians consistently expresses appreciation for the structured nature of our sessions, emphasising the enjoyment, learning, and sense of belonging experienced by all involved. Beyond honing footballing skills, our sessions instil valuable life lessons such as teamwork, discipline, and resilience, equipping young people with the tools they need to succeed both on and off the pitch.
In essence, Ekota's football sessions represent more than just athletic pursuits; they are a vehicle for empowerment, growth, and holistic well-being, shaping the leaders of tomorrow one goal at a time.

HOLIDAY PROGRAMMES
In one of the most deprived areas, Ekota's holiday programmes offer a lifeline to families, providing structure, enrichment, and a safe haven during school holiday. For many youngsters from economically challenged households, the prospect of idle hours can lead to boredom, restlessness, negative influences, and anti-social behaviours. However, holiday activities, organised by Ekota in collaboration with Barking and Dagenham Council and Vision Redbridge's MegaMix Programme, transform these potentially idle days into memorable experiences filled with laughter, learning, and growth.
Set amidst the greenery of Goodmayes Park, our holiday programmes buzz with energy and enthusiasm. Led by passionate skilled instructors and young volunteers , the camps offer a diverse array of dynamic sporting activities designed to engage and excite young minds. From football and basketball to cricket and athletics, each activity entertains and inspires a love for movement, teamwork, and healthy competition.
For children from BAME, low-income, and disadvantaged backgrounds, these activities provide more than recreational opportunities; they offer a structured environment filled with positive activities, becoming catalysts for personal development, instilling values of discipline, resilience, and camaraderie.
The impact of these holiday activities extends beyond Goodmayes Park. Many participants, inspired by their experiences, explore additional sporting avenues or volunteering, fostering a lasting commitment to physical activity and personal growth . Thus, holiday activities serve as respites from everyday challenges and as springboards for long-term empowerment and success, offering hope and inspiration to children who need it most.

In response to heightened mental health concerns post-COVID19, particularly among children, young adults, and BAME communities, our staff and volunteers are adept at providing empathetic support and navigating safeguarding rules appropriately.
NUTRITION FOR EVERY CHILD
Recognising the profound impact of nutrition on childhood development and wellbeing, Ekota has implemented a comprehensive nutrition project ensuring every child attending our holiday camps receives nourishing meals. Understanding the economic hardships endured by many low-income families amid a cost-of-living crisis, we provide food assistance throughout our summer programmes. For six weeks during the holiday camp, each day includes wholesome, nutrient-rich meals, ensuring no child goes hungry and every participant receives vital sustenance to thrive. This initiative addresses immediate nutritional needs and highlights our commitment to fostering holistic well- being and supporting families facing financial adversity.

Ekota's installation of an outdoor table tennis table in Goodmayes Park has significantly enriched local activities and the park experience for visitors . The table has been warmly received by the community and is consistently used by parkgoers of all ages and backgrounds. Its presence encourages engagement in outdoor recreational activities, fostering a vibrant and dynamic atmosphere within the park. Families, friends, and individuals gather around the table, enjoying friendly matches and social interactions. Moreover, the table provides an accessible and inclusive leisure option for residents, promoting physical activity and social cohesion. Overall, Ekota's initiative has enhanced the appeal and utilisation of Goodmayes Park , contributing to the well-being and enjoyment of local residents.

Ekota's cycling scheme at Goodmayes Park has sparked a passion for cycling among participants, thanks to a comprehensive three-year programme. Weekly cycling education sessions, facilitated by trained instructors, have empowered young children to develop confidence and safety skills on bicycles. The programme has become a cherished community activity, drawing enthusiastic participation. Additionally, Ekota has introduced a women-only cycle project, specifically catering to BAME women interested in learning cycling. This initiative aims to promote inclusivity and empowerment through cycling.
As a testament to Ekota's commitment to cycling education, three team members have completed rigorous training and testing to become certified cycling instructors. PARTNERSHIPS AND COLLABORATIONS
SCHOOLS PROGRAMMES
The summer programme played a pivotal role in strengthening Ekota's partnerships with local schools. Hosting the borough school games at Goodmayes Park provided a fantastic opportunity for schools across the borough to unite and engage in a variety of running activities. Through concerted efforts, Ekota has cultivated robust relationships with numerous local schools, resulting in frequent invitations to attend school activities and offer support at events. These partnerships hold significant importance for us, as we recognise the importance of inspiring and engaging young people from an early age. It is through these collaborations that Ekota's schools programme has developed, enabling us to effectively contribute to the holistic development of students and foster a lasting impact within the community.
MULTI-SPORTS AT SCHOOLS INITIATIVE
Ekota collaborates closely with schools to enhance their sports programmes by introducing after-school multi-sports cricket and football sessions. Recognising that some schools may not include these sports in their regular PE curriculum, Ekota steps in to fill this gap, providing additional opportunities for children to participate in diverse sporting activities.
Our experienced coaches and volunteers work closely with school staff to ensure seamless integration and effective delivery of these sessions. Through structured training and engaging activities, we aim to foster skill development, teamwork, and a sense of accomplishment among participating students.
Ultimately, Ekota's collaboration with schools in providing after-school multisports cricket and football sessions contributes to the holistic development of students, enriches their health and wellbeing and reinforces the importance of regular physical activity in their lives.

CHALLENGES AND LESSONS LEARNED
During the reporting period, Ekota encountered various challenges that tested the resilience and adaptability of the organisation. One significant obstacle was the delay in capital funding due to planning permissions, hindering the progress of projects at Goodmayes Park Pavilion. Overcoming this hurdle required meticulous attention ’ to detail, collaboration and support from the London borough of Redbridge s Leisure and Culture Team, and perseverance to ensure necessary approvals were obtained, ultimately allowing Ekota to proceed with its community initiatives.
Another challenge arose from the seasonal opening and closing times of Goodmayes Park, which necessitated adjustments to our programme timetables. While this presented logistical challenges, Ekota successfully adapted to these constraints, ensuring that beneficiaries remained informed and accommodated within the revised schedules.
In addition, securing new funding for projects proved to be an ongoing challenge, demanding innovative approaches and sustained efforts from the charity's team. Despite these hurdles, Ekota demonstrated resilience by successfully securing funding for projects spanning the next two years. Continual fundraising and proactive pursuit of funding opportunities remain essential for the charity's growth and development.
The small staff base posed limitations on Ekota's ability to attend all council meetings in person. However, the organisation addressed this challenge by leveraging online resources, including webinars and mailing lists, to stay informed about local discussions and developments. This adaptive approach enabled Ekota to remain actively engaged with the community and relevant stakeholders.
Despite these challenges, Ekota persevered by prioritising networking and relationship-building with key stakeholders. By nurturing these connections, the organisation strengthened its support network and enhanced its ability to navigate challenges effectively. Overall, the reporting period highlighted Ekota's resilience, adaptability, and commitment to overcoming obstacles in pursuit of its mission to serve the community.
