## **Trustees’ Annual Report for the period**

**From 7[th] October 21 To 6[th] April 23**

## **Charity name: APT for Social Development**

**Charity registration number:** 1196076

## **Objectives and Activities**

||SORP
reference||
|---|---|---|
|Summary of the purposes of
the charity as set out in its
governing document|Para 1.17|During its first 18 months of operation as a
charity, APT4SD has promoted social inclusion,
physical and mental wellbeing in those often
excluded by providing training in Appropriate
Paper-based Technology (APT), and support for
workshops in Wales and Kenya to produce APT
assistive devices for children with disabilities|
|Summary of the main
activities in relation to those
purposes for the public
benefit, in particular, the
activities, projects or services
identified in the accounts.|Para 1.17 and
1.19|Training in APT has taken place in Talybont-on-
Usk in Wales and in Njoro and Maua in Kenya
and a workshop in Kinamba near Nyahururu
was built. The Talybont, Njoro and Maua
workshops have been supported financially in
terms of rent, volunteer and paid staff, and
materials to enable them to provide APT
assistive devices for children with Disabilities.
Both these Kenyan workshops have had further
training and evaluation visits and received
ongoing remote support.
The Kinamba workshop, and its trainer/APTer
have not received any further funding since the
initial trainings he delivered in February and
March 22 when his techniques were found to
have become substandard and his behaviour
unacceptable. His organisations workshop was
visited in Dec 22 and found to be barely
functional with the neighbouring L’Arche
workshop also visited and future collaboration
discussed, but no financial support provided as
this workshop already well established,|
|Statement confirming
whether the trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public
benefit|Para 1.18|The trustees have kept the focus of the Charity’s
activity on benefiting those involved in the
production process as well as the children with
disabilities and their families who are assessed
for and receive the assistive devices made for
them|

## **Achievements and Performance**

||SORP
reference||
|---|---|---|
|Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.|Para 1.20|The volunteers in Wales were able to use the
Talybont workshop to enable adults with
intellectual disabilities to learn how to make APT
items and continue attending on a regular basis
to make devices for their family and friends,
providing a supportive, social environment to
harness their creativity, Therapists preparing for
training others in Kenya were able to use
Talybont and a Welshpool workshop to prepare
for the training of Kenyan workshop staff and
Therapists in the first quarter in 2022. This
allowed two new workshops to be established in
Njoro and Maua which have continued to
produce devices which have been positively
evaluated as benefitting children with disabilities
and their families. The Njoro workshop has been
the more successful not only in its monthly
assessment and production which also involves
parents working as “Paperers” on the devices,
but in helping to train APTers from other
organisations although this training was done
independently of APT4SD.|

## **Financial Review**

|Review of the charity’s
financial position at the end
of the period|Para 1.21|Njoro workshop support for rest of 2023
already paid out through its UK charity,
Remaining grant money for Maua
workshop to be paid quarterly following
satisfactory performance review|
|---|---|---|
|Statement explaining the
policy for holding reserves
stating why they are held|Para 1.22|No reserves|
|Amount of reserves held|Para 1.22|Zero|
|Reasons for holding zero
reserves|Para 1.22|New charity so far reliant on grants with
funds all designated for specific activities
so no chance to build up a reserve|
|Details of fund materially in
deficit|Para 1.24|None|
|Explanation of any
uncertainties about the
charity continuing as a going
concern|Para 1.23|Although ongoing funding is uncertain the
trustees are still committed to the work of
the charity. The trustees recognise the
need for further trustees and volunteers
before proposing further projects and
seeking funding for them at this time|

We were advised that an external auditors’ report was not required given our income of just £30000 in our first 18 months.

Apologies if this is incorrect and we will endeavour to organise this but did not want to delay the rest of the submission .

From Rachel Lindoewood , Chair of Trustees, APT4SD
