OBJECTIVES AND ACTlVtriES
Objectives
The objectives of the Charity are to provide and maintain in the interests of social welfare, a
swimming pool for the benefit of the inhabitants of Wiveliscombe and its vicinity. and of the
public generally. without distinction of sex or of political, religious or other opinions, with the
object of improving the conditions of life for the said users.
Publlc beneflt reportlng
When revlewin8 the Charitys objectives and artI￿ties and in planning future activities, the
trustees have due regard to the Charty Commission's 8eneral 8uidance on public benefit.
This was demonstrated in 2023. by the decision of the trustees of the Charity to keep the
pool open to the public durin8 Autumn {up to the last day of September), with the objert of
continuln8 the benefrts of outdoor swimming for the user5.
Achlevements and Perf0M￿nCe of the Charfty
We started 2023 with the drama of a leak in the pool that had to be located and repaired-
thls resulted in the pool belng emptied and once the leak had been identified some
considerable work was undertaken to repair it-8rateful thanks to Paul Whittard and Martin
Keane lalon8With several volunteers) on the emptyin8 Out of the pool and fibre8lass fix
achleved durln8 the rare dry land not too cold) days of January / February 2023. The repair
and subsequent fillingof the pool meant we could not open the pool until 8 April.
At the same time the Trustees were presslng ahead with the installation of an Alr Source
Heat Pump- a project that had been evaluated and subsequently ordered with the benefit
of a grant and loan from Somerset Community Enterprise Fund that we were very lucky to
have been awarded In December 2022- this coincided with a conslderable amount of fund-
ralsing from Channel Swimmers and generous phllanthropists In our community.
Once we had opened, 2023 was extremely busy as we garnered the support {and
attendance) of Kingsmead School for swimmin8 lessons. Unft>rtunately, COVID has resulted
In a hlgh number of children not leamingto swim as they were 'locked down,. WSveyPool
Iparticularly our new Trustee Mlke Davis) worked with Klngsmead PE Department to correct
thls sad situation and Years 7 and 8 attended twice a week from end April with amazlng
success.
At the beglnning of April Wiveypool held its first RLSS NPLQ Lifeguard course on site run by
our very own Inewly qualified RLSS Trainer) Pool Manager Sylvia Cottrell- many thanks
agaln to VKiveliscombe Rugby Club for provldin8 a room. All 8 attendees passed. and we had
a welcome influx of new lifeguards.
During the Main Season of 2023 we had two Swimmln8 Instrurtors working at the pool to
carry out swimming lessons (for schools. groups. and Individuals) and fun classes like Aqua
Circuits and Crash Courses.

Malntenance:
Apart from the considerable amount of work repalrlng the leak (referred to above) the
major 'Maintenance' Projert for 2023 was installation of the Air Source Heat Pump. another
array of solar panels lon the roof of the chanw'ng rooms) and chan8ing over to Phase 3
electrlclty to make the most of all our solar panels. It is very satisfyin8 to know we are 'dolng
our blt for the plant, to get off fossll fuels and run the pool more ener8y efficient.
Notwlthstandlng this, we need to keep our connection to gas as sometimes there Just Isn't
quite enough sunshine to sufficlently heat the water.
Fundraldng
Very grateful thanks to all trustees who helped wlth fundralsing- MlkÈ Davls and lan Payne
for their work wlth Somerset Community Enterprise Fund. Hamlsh Mccarthy for another
Channel Swlm with some of the young WILOSquad members. donations from local groups
(including but not exclusively". Chipstable Parish Council, Wlvey Show, Wivey Whist Drive,
Brendon Energy, Waltrose, Thorne's, Whelans....) and of course the phenomenal generosity
of our Communlty.
