Achievements and Performance
| SORP reference | ||
|---|---|---|
| Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole. |
Para 1.20 | In the shanty town and slum dwellings: The Bollywood Dance Project has opened Generate Love’s doors to a new generation. The service users range from 4 – 40 years but the majority of them are in their early teens. We run two classes a day, six days a week. Many children drop in now and again for fun with their friends but others attend religiously and have become very skilled. Our “A-Squad” performed at the Spring Festival and won a cash prize. We made costumes for them for the event and for some it was the first new dress that they’d ever owned. They continue to train near daily and we anticipate many more shows and competitions ahead. This is the first time that Generate Love has had a dedicated indoor space. (Formerly we’ve been running activities outside or in volunteers’ front rooms) It has created a hub for young people and encouraged artists to run one-off events for them. It serves as a safe space and shelter for the more vulnerable members of the community. |
The availability of scholarships is inspiring children to dream bigger and study harder. five service users won places at University or Vocational college With the help of a mentor, one of our scholarship students got a job in Australia as a mountain guide and activity leader. Another of our scholarship students graduated as an electrical engineer and has subsequently been offered work with an international fabrication company. Last year we secured funding for a bright but impoverished girl to go to Nursing College (which, along with medical school is about ten times the cost of other courses.) Unfortunately, the donor withdrew their offer due to personal reasons. Thankfully though, one of our regular benefactors stepped in and now our scholarship student is midway through a course which enable her to work almost anywhere in the world. The scholarship students willingly volunteered at our Bollywood dance Project. In the beggar Camps: The pavement schools are creating literacy in communities where the majority of adults sign documents – such as birth certificates - with a thumb print which prohibits them possessing “everyday” items such as a bank card and leaves them open to exploitation. The activities and games that we run alongside classes inspire joy, laughter and a commitment to learning. It is well documented that play (at all ages) is vital for positive wellbeing - a conclusion that our anecdotal evidence concurs wholeheartedly with.
Celebrating our service users birthdays and taking them on excursions to local - beauty spots boosts happiness and self
esteem in our service users. We ran a Christmas party and gifted all the children who were camped out over winter a warm jacket, boots, hat and thick socks.
