BRCA+ Chat honestly saved me last year when I was post-op after my double mastectomy. I was in the depths of depression out of the blue. As a mental health nurse I found it so so difficult. I would like to give back once I'm back to feeling more like myself as just going through surgical menopause I will hopefully share some images and do some fundraising. Thank you girls so so much. Executive Summary
Another year for BRCA+ Chat, and another year of growth, strength, community and peer support. We are continuously seeing the amazing impact of our charity and how it empowers those with a genetic alteration. Feedback from our community is highlighted throughout this report.
Over the year, we have kept our main support services growing and evolving. We have increased our Peer Support Groups (PSGs) to a monthly basis, with a rotation of topics; general, cancer specific and ovaries. We have also launched in- person PSGs in collaboration with NHS Leeds Genetics Hospital, and we welcome medical professionals to provide talks.

We have built connections with other genetic services, and have introduced a regular talk from NHS genetic counsellors Maddie Gale and Charlie Hanmer-Lloyd on “I’ve Just Found Out, What Next?”. We have started discussions with Nottingham Breast Institute to create a joint resource with the NHS. Our charity is regularly recommended by NHS genetic services across the UK as a vital source of support for those with genetic alterations.
From 2026, we have increased our online talks to monthly, and continue to have a range of community members, medical professionals and health and wellbeing professionals disseminating important information to our beneficiaries.
Our in-person socials have grown, welcoming a total of 13 volunteers, hosting meet ups across the UK – we have added Essex, Devon, Lincolnshire and Oxfordshire to the map. We have hosted a specialist event with Rigby and Peller and hosted our first National Meet Up in London in partnership with global corporation MillerKnoll, which 60 individuals booked on.
Our awareness continues to grow, and we have been involved in a global campaign with AstraZeneca and other international charities, reaching 3 million individuals. We have joined a partnership with BagLady Films who have created a mini-series raising awareness of women’s health issues (due for release 2026). We have also been involved in the University of Sheffield’s report “Social Media for carriers of hereditary cancer syndromes”, published in March 2026.

Executive Summary cont
We continue to work on the production of our resources, forever updating our website and socials. We have also joined The Patient Information Forum (PIF) and started the process of gaining PIF TICK certification, to ensure the production of our information is to regulated standards. This will be in place within the next financial year.
Our finances continue to grow organically, with a 56% increase in our income compared to last year, which is entirely funded via donations from our benefactors.
We are sad to say farewell to trustees Kate Biles and Janine Duncan, and want to thank them for all their support as original board members of the charity. We are very excited to introduce Hayley Baxter, a registered accountant, as our new treasurer.

Objectives
Our vision is to build a world where people’s lives are not determined by their gene mutations.
We will work towards this by:

Activities, Achievements & Performance
Overview
As our events and bookings have been increasing this year, Alison, our co-ordinator continues to streamline our processes. We acknowledge all bookings to support people in engaging with our services, as the first step can often invoke anxiety. Our website development and social media presence continues to grow being a valuable source of information and support.
This year our co-founders have continued their focus on networking and improving the services we offer. Through networking, more and more community members, health care professionals and organisations are becoming aware of the work we do at BRCA+ Chat and we are continuing to grow our community. Over the past 3 years we have had a 220% increase on individuals booking on our events.
GOOD SPACE FOR SHARING, AND FOR HELPING OTHERS
We continue to receive large numbers of incredibly supportive messages as well as requests for information and advice. We provide information based on the experiences within our community, and aim to signpost accredited sources of information, highlighting new research and news when it is published. This has been helped through collaboration with other charities and building new important relationships. We have been expanding our resources and have had accredited medical professionals provide information sessions to our community.

Activities
Peer Support Groups
Our Peer Support Groups (PSGs) remain at the heart of BRCA+ Chat. They provide a platform for the community to gain support from others on the same journey, eradicate any feelings of isolation and share knowledge, experiences and understanding.
The PSGs also allow the team to ascertain the frequently asked questions and information gaps within the community which enables us to produce valuable resources. We also recruit professionals (voluntarily) for specific webinars tailored to the community’s needs.
This was the first full year of increasing our PSGs to every month with cycling dedicated subjects of general, cancer specific and ovary specific. We held an amazing 10 PSGs with a total of 194 bookings. As the PSGs are hosted voluntarily by our trustees, we swapped December for a virtual Christmas Social and had a break in August.
In addition to our virtual PSGs, we are very excited to announce that this year we launched our hospital PSG with NHS Leeds Genetic Support Group. This collaboration has allowed us to elevate our virtual PSGs within Leeds to be in person with medical professionals coming in to provide seminars and Q&A sessions. Hosting these alongside the genetics team within Leeds Hospital has meant there has been genetics counsellors present at every group.
To launch these hospital support groups, Lisa, Christen and Alison attended a conference held by Leeds Genetics Support Group where they provided a talk on BRCA+ Chat, and held discussions about the community’s needs from the support groups. There were some insightful suggestions and great discussions which helped us understand and shape what the community required for support. This year we held 3 hospital PSGs with 38 bookings.

Meet Ups
Our BRCA+ Babes (volunteers hosting meet ups) have been hard at work this year holding meet ups across the country, which continue building in popularity. They are essential to the service BRCA+ Chat offers, due to their ability to provide support, connection and understanding.
With the re-launch of the BRCA+ Babes recruitment, training and processes, we have had an increase in locations and meet ups which continues to grow. This year, we held 26 meet ups with 273 bookings across the UK.
We added 5 new locations to our reach – Devon, Essex, Oxfordshire, Hampshire and Lincolnshire. This brings our total meet up locations to 13. We also have new volunteers to manage socials that our trustees were hosting, which frees up their capacity for charity development.
Our meet ups have evolved and we held some more specialised events such as a mastectomy bra fitting event with Rigby and Pellar and galentines pizza parties. We also attended a viewing of the premier of GoodBye Breasts!, an incredibly inspirational film created by Joanna Callaghan to document her journey of breast cancer with a PALB2 genetic alteration. Christen hosted a stall at the premiere and spread the word of BRCA+ Chat establishing some great contacts (she had a small feature in the film too).

National Event - London
In addition to the increase in locations, this year BRCA+ Chat held its first national event in London. This was an incredible event with a number of activities: nipple-tassel making, cupcake decorating, hula hooping, Zumba, and face painting. It was also a great opportunity for our co-founders to give an update on BRCA+ Chat and gain valuable feedback on the community’s needs moving forward.
The event was a great opportunity for connections to be made, friendships to be forged and a lot of chatting. We had 60 bookings for the national event with calls to hold them more often and across the country. This national event also provided BRCA+ Chat with an opportunity to develop a corporate partnership with MillerKnoll, who very generously donated their offices in London as well as catering for food and drink at the event. A BIG thank you to them and to our volunteer Maria Eastell for arranging the partnership.

Information Sharing Webinars
This year our webinars have taken another leap in popularity. As BRCA+ Chat has grown, the list of topics for our webinars has increased in line with the topics needed from the community. In addition to the topics increasing, we have also been lucky to have medical professionals offer their time to hold some of these webinars, elevating the information we continue to share with our community.
With our reach continuing to grow, in 2026 we increased the frequency of our webinars to once a month. This year we held 6 webinars with 325 bookings, the same amount of webinars as last year, but 99 more bookings
Although these webinars are based on care available in the UK, we have had people book on from around the world, showing us that the work we are doing is vital and reaching even further afield than we realise. One of our New Zealand buddies said BRCA+ Chat was recommended via her hospital, and it had inspired her to create similar support in New Zealand.

Information Sharing cont
This year we entered into a collaboration with Nottingham Breast Institute, and NHS genetic counsellor Rachel Spence, to create further e-resources for the community. We have started a draft of a mastectomy eBook and will continue the production of this into the next financial year.
In order to ensure that our information is accurate and reliable, we have started our accreditation process with PIF TICK. This will require an assessment and ongoing audit of the production and quality of our resources. We will gain our certification within 2026-27, which will enable more NHS Trusts, charities and organisations to signpost to us.
Lisa and Christen continue to share the work that BRCA+ Chat does within the medical professional world. They have provided talks and service overviews to genetics clinics in Liverpool, Birmingham and Bristol. In addition, this year Lisa has provided talks to The TrainLine and the Scottish Government on BRCA+ Chat, her journey and how to check for breast cancer, which has both raised awareness and resulted in The TrainLine and their staff fundraising for us.
Alison has been working to keep our socials and website up to date with additional resources, information, blogs and mastectomy images. With more people visiting our website for information, we aim to invest some finances in the next financial year to optimise website accessibility and functionality.
Very knowledge and gave some good advice and tips that I have made a note of. Felt like a small community on the talk, and at a difficult time, knowing there are others going through something similar helps.

Newsletters

We continue to send out monthly newsletters to our subscriber list. Following an overhaul of the newsletter, we have added specific topics and signposting to other organisations as well as updates on what is going on behind the scenes at BRCA+ Chat. Our newsletters also provide a useful platform for advertising our upcoming events. The newsletter is a safe and inclusive space for individuals to share images anonymously (even spooky, silly ones).
This year we sent out 12 newsletters and finished the financial year with a subscriber list of 337.

Building our Community
At BRCA+ Chat we aim to eradicate feelings of isolation and loneliness within our community. We create a space for peer-to-peer support, information and resource sharing while, most importantly, showing that having a genetic alteration is manageable with community by your side.
This year we have begun to implement new services, including “Ask Our Genetic Counsellors”. Maddie Gale is a NHS genetic counsellor who has come on board with BRCA+ Chat and hosted our “I’ve Just Found Out What Next?” talk. This was our most popular talk of the year with 77 bookings, indicating we need a regular slot for it. We have also been joined by genetics counsellor Charlie Hanmer-Lloyd and between them they will host this talk bi-annually. These talks are a great opportunity for us to collate Frequently Asked Questions and develop appropriate resources for the initial stage of diagnosis. Our aim is to develop a page on the website where individuals can ask our genetic counsellors questions throughout their journey.
We have also reached out to all the genetic clinics in the UK, and some hospitals and GP surgeries, sending them leaflets and posters outlining the support we provide. In doing this, we have noticed an increase in referrals from health clinics and we have been recommended on NHS letters informing individuals of their genetic alteration results. The feedback from health care professionals on the service we provide has been incredible and BRCA+ Chat is now being seen as a vital and important resource that many patients are now being signposted to.
Well-being
Our Yoga Meditation sessions with Rosie have continued this year providing an incredibly valuable space for relaxation and turning up for yourself. We have held 6 sessions this year with 76 bookings, a 100% increase on last year. Rosie has adapted these sessions to be accessible to anyone, even if they have recently had surgery. The feedback we continue to receive from these sessions is amazing and we are really excited to be able to provide a calming platform where our community can really reconnect with themselves.

Campaigning
This year Christen and BRCA+ Chat collaborated with AstraZeneca and other international charities on a global campaign to raise awareness and start conversations about genetic alterations and their effects on people's lives. Through a series of short videos of people with genetic alterations discussing their journeys, 3,050,304 million individual people were reached. The results of this campaign were massive with a total of 10,633,521 views and 39% (1.2 million) of the audience actively engaging with the campaign.
In addition to this, BRCA+ Chat have been involved in a report published by the University of Sheffield, “Social Media for carriers of hereditary cancer syndromes”. Our co-founders were invited to provide a talk at their conference alongside Eve Appeal and Lynch Syndrome UK. The report highlights valuable insights around the censorship of women’s health issues on social media, and the benefits of support and community alongside the risk of false medical information being produced. Whilst our information is all obtained through trusted sources this was a further motivator for our PIF TICK certification. Our connections with the University of Sheffield on this report linked us with CensHERship Campaign, which tackles the aforementioned censorship of women’s health on social media.

This year, Lisa has continued to engage with Professor Ranjit Manchanda and collaborated with him, and many others within the cancer genetics field, on a funding proposal for Yorkshire Cancer Research. This is for a project which explores BRCA patient preferences for using PARP-inhibitors for medical prevention in BRCA carriers. This collaboration was a great space for networking and really raising the patient’s voice, as well as highlighting the work BRCA+ Chat are doing. The proposal was unsuccessful, however through opportunities like this we are continuing to raise the issues our community face, spreading the word of what BRCA+ Chat are doing and continuing to engage and make connections with important people within the cancer genetics space.
Fundraisers
We are still amazed that BRCA+ Chat remains entirely funded by donors and fundraisers. The generosity of those who have donated or fundraised for us continues to warm our hearts. These donations are a constant reminder that our charity has a big impact and supports individuals across the UK.
This year we had some exciting corporate fundraisers with companies such as Brewdog raising £1,172 for us. Their biggest donation came in the form of a generous American tourist who was moved by our posters and donated $1,000. In addition, we got an incredible £4,000 from the Mega Glastonbury Festival raffle, where we were chosen as one of their 3 charities – all through our links with Trustee Janine and her connections with the festival.

Lisa celebrated her 5-year mastectomy-versary this year by completing the terrifying highland swing, a jump off a 44 ft bridge with a 15 ft freefall! This was a challenge on many levels for Lisa and she has raised a fantastic £1,375. Lisa is terrified of heights, but she stated, “What can be scarier than a mastectomy?” We are so proud of her.
A huge thank you to all of you who have kept us going over the years and continue to support the work we are doing through donations, fundraisers and submitting blogs and images. We appreciate you all so much.

Future Plans
The future looks bright for BRCA+ Chat, as we are seeing more demand and referrals from across the UK and embarking on collaborations with NHS, pharmaceuticals, universities and the film industry (wow).
As we keep growing, so do our aspirations for what we can achieve and provide. This coming year, we are looking to finish the rehaul of our website, with support from a website developer making it more accessible and functional, and full to the brim of useful information and resources.
We are also hosting another national meet up following the success of last year’s event. Listening to feedback, we will bring these to different locations across the country to enable different people to attend. Our next stop will be Sheffield, and, yes, we are providing a BRCA Brew (Yorkshire of course).
We will continue to recruit BRCA+ Babes and have more meet ups in new locations. We have already had offers for volunteers in Bristol, Sheffield and Hertfordshire, so we are looking to increase our funds and capacity to accommodate these additions.
Our talks are continuing this year with the aim to incorporate more health care professionals, experts and new topics. We love our talks and know how valuable they can be and will continue to listen to our community on what they need. With our PIF TICK certification, we are hoping to have more collaborations with other charities and organisations, sharing the load and creating signposting opportunities. We will aim to recruit a new trustee with a medical background to support us with our production and dissemination of resources.
Finally, and most excitingly, we have grown so much over the past 4.5 years that we now require strategic leadership to manage this continued growth. We are so proud that we have provided so much and helped so many, via volunteers with no staff on payroll. Our funds have come purely from donations, and we have never been required to apply for a funding bid. However, this is no longer sustainable with our continued growth, so we aim to have a CEO by January 2027.

Recruitment and Appointment of Trustees
The Trustees are recruited through word of mouth or BRCA+ Chat advertising. The Trustees conduct an annual audit of the Board to identify where new Trustees with specialist skills or knowledge can benefit the charity. Prospective Trustees are interviewed by at least two members of the Trustee Board and then invited to attend a Trustee meeting to introduce themselves and their reasons for wanting to be a Trustee to the current Board members. A vote of the existing Trustees is then taken to confirm appointment.
Trustees are inducted by use of Charity Commission Trustee resources, introduction to the charity by Trustee Chair, Secretary and Treasurer and resources from charity infrastructure organisations.
Statement of the Charity's Policy on Reserves
Cash in bank at 31.03.2026 was £26,551 in unrestricted funds. The Trustees’ policy on reserves is to hold enough reserves to cover dissolution of the charity. This is reviewed annually. They are confident that the charity has enough funds to cover any dissolution costs.

The Trustees declare that the charity had no funds which were materially in deficit at the date of the statement of assets and liabilities.

State of the Charity’s Finances
Thanks to the efforts of our many supporters who have raised funds for us our reserves have doubled in the past year and the Board has made plans in the coming year to use these funds to meet our objectives by budgeting for admin and specialist support services to provide more comprehensive support for our beneficiaries.
