## **Report of the Trustees** 

The Trustees present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 24th September 2024. The Trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing  their  accounts  in  accordance  with  the  Financial  Reporting  Standards applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) effective 1st January 2019. 

## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES** 

## **Objectives and aims** 

The purpose of the Charity as set out in its governing document, is the relief of veterans and their families living in England and Wales, from the impact of poverty, by providing support to those seeking financial independence through Self-Employment. 

## **Significant Activities.** 

The following activities have been undertaken in support of the Charitable objectives:- 

## **Statutory information.** 

Assistance given to veterans to obtain:*National Insurance Number, Service records *Register Self-employment status with H.M. Revenue and Customs *Obtain Unique Tax Reference from HMRC 

*Advise on business structure including creation of Limited Company at Companies House 

## **Promotion of Self-reliance.** 

Develop veteran’s business ideas for a product or service for their Business StartUp.Provide long-term encouragement and build self-belief. 

Assist  with  market  research,  competitors,  costings,  budgets,  advertising,  recordkeeping, compliance, accounts and tax returns. Assist by sourcing premises, liaising with property agents, solicitors Obtaining bank account, insurance cover Debt assistance, Landlord & Tenant matters Link with other Agencies to protect and promote veterans’ needs Maintain regular contact to ensure veterans’ needs are met. 

Work with other organisations providing pro-bono service viz: legal advice, insurance cover,  recycled  IT  equipment,  web  designers  and  supportive  owners  of  existing businesses. 

Teach basic cooking skills, domestic budgeting. 



## **Public Benefit** 

Veterans Business Base are aware of, have considered and regularly review the Charity Commission’s 

Public Benefit Guidance to ensure that the activities undertaken are relevant. 

The Trustees believe that the Charity has only charitable purposes which are carried out for the Public 

Benefit of the Armed Forces Community in England and Wales.

Veterans Business Base does not award grants to other organisations or individuals.

## **Volunteers** 

Volunteers assist the Charity on all activities that are grant funded and much more. At their own expense, volunteers meet veterans seeking business advice, which often extends into providing assistance on a range of issues affecting their welfare including, but not limited to: housing, debt management, health, domestic budgeting, cooking, liaising with DWP., NHS and family relationships. 

## **ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE** 

1. Veterans Business Base visits several H.M Prisons to advise inmates on Business Start-Ups and continues to support veterans following their discharge. Continuing enquires from several HM Prisons will require the Charity to 

2. Veterans Business Base supports those people referred to them by the Birmingham & Solihull NHS 

Mental Health Trust. 

3. In addition to general enquires from veterans in England & Wales, the Charity is connected with various 

veterans’ hubs. 

4. The Charity continues to provide long term mentoring to those veterans who Started Up their business 

many years ago. 

5. Continue to work with partners in the Armed Forces Charitable sector and DWP Armed Forces Champions 

6. Number of Veterans Advised:- 

55 veterans advised within H.M Prison Service. 

156 Veterans advised on Business Start-Up and development of their existing business. 



## **FINANCIAL REVIEW** 

The charities principal sources of funding are through Grant funding Reserves policy. The target policy is to hold 6 months operational costs and 3 months administrative 

expenditure in the unlikely event the income were to cease. 

## **FUTURE PLANS.** 

The Charity’s future plans primarily involve providing Start-Up advice to an increasing number of veterans due to their difficulty in securing full-time employment.

Veterans Business Base is governed within the bounds of the Charities constitution which is structured so as to perform as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation in accordance with the Charity Commissions CIO Foundation model.

The Charity is constituted as a CIO in accordance with the Charity Commissions CIO Foundation Model. 

## **Recruitment and appointment of new trustees** . 

Trustees are selected by the existing Board of Trustees in consultation with the Charities’ Chief Executive Officer. 

## **Statement of Trustees’ Responsibilities.** 

The Trustees are responsibilities for preparing the Report of the Trustees and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Accepted Accounting Practice) 

The law applicable to charities in England and Wales, the Charities Act 2011, (Accounts and  Reports)  Regulations  2008  and  the  provision  of  the  trust  deed  requires  the Trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial ma year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of the incoming resources and application of resources, including the income and expenditure of the charity for that period. 

The Trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and enable them to ensure  that  the  financial  statements  comply  with  the  Charities  Act  2011,  the Charity(Accounts and Reports)Regulations 2008 and provisions of the trust deed. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and 

hence taking reasonable steps for the operation and detection of fraud and other irregularities.
