Sci4Us is an engaging STEM Club, led by two young female scientists, who volunteer their time to encourage children aged 5-18, to enjoy and persevere in STEM subjects. We believe that ‘Science is for All of Us’ and hope to inspire and lead the future generation into STEM.

Sci4Us provides the necessary STEM learning children need, but is set up in a way that it does not feel like an extension of school.

Resources are provided and tailored to children across the UK, in particular the more commonly over-looked segments of the wider community that typically wouldn’t have the opportunity to experience hands-on STEM focused learning.

By offering these resources, children are able to experiment and experience STEM in the wider society, in turn, increasing children’s science capital.

The trustees represent the voices of the community and help in deciding what activities should be ran by Sci4Us, or where they believe any funding received should be allocated.

There is a child protection policy in place and before trustees have direct contact with the children from Sci4Us a Criminal Records Bureau Check is carried out in line with statutory requirements.

All trustees give their time voluntarily and received no remuneration or other benefits.

Objectives and activities

The promotion of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) learning for the public benefit of children aged between 6 and 16 years in England and Wales by raising more awareness of the subject and its benefits, advancing children’s STEM education and supporting their school learning.

Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects:

The main activities undertaken are as follows:

Undertaking these activities benefit the children by helping them to become aware of the possible merits and advantages of studying a STEM subject even for their future careers too. We also help to create a cycle for the young children whereby they learn STEM and understand the importance of it which in turn as they grow older are happy to volunteer and pass that same learning and understanding down to the younger children. We help and welcome ALL young children between the ages of 6 and 16, regardless of personal background, faith, gender or personal circumstances.

Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year:

Sci4Us have been able to reach 391 children as a result of our services and different partnerships that we have established which is detailed below.

A) Services provided:

Online Saturday STEM Club:

This service is for children aged between 5 - 11 who live anywhere in the UK. In this service, we send carefully packed STEM kits straight to the child's residence along with a Zoom code. The children then log into Zoom from 9-10am and 10-11am to join in the live streaming session and together, work through all the experiments, activities and worksheets that have been sent to them that week.

Physical Saturday STEM Club

For children also aged between 5 - 11 who live closer to the community centre which is currently based in Bromley, Kent. The children physically attend the session from 11.30am - 1.30pm where a range of STEM topics are taught in line with the National Curriculum but in a fun and exciting way. Here, we relate STEM to everyday life so children at the club can see that Science is really all around them.

Serious About STEM Subjects (SASS)

We have been providing a service that targets students aged between 11 - 18. Within this service, we prepare children for GCSE and A-Levels by focusing on the practical side of the three Sciences, providing one-to-one tutoring and showcasing the possible career paths within STEM. Those who graduate from our Saturday STEM Club are also given the opportunity to return as volunteers and impart their knowledge as well as gaining experience in teaching and being a leader.

STEM Based Parties

This year, we have also been hosting children's science themed parties making it a fun and memorable time for them. During the parties, children

have the opportunity to experience different types of experiments ranging from gooey slime making to science based "magic" tricks. Children also leave with a Sci4Us goodie bag ensuring they have the full Sci4Us experience.

B) Partnerships:

Immanuel & St Andrew Church of England Primary School, Streatham

From September to December 2021, Sci4Us provided an after-school club service at this Streatham based primary school. Here, we delivered engaging and hands-on hour-long STEM sessions on a weekly basis to children from Year 3 to Year 6.

Tumino Kids

For Black History Month, Sci4Us partnered with another charity to highlight how STEM can be applicable to everything. Here, we were given the task of using Science to demonstrate the rich history and culture of Africa especially in terms of the jewellery. This was achieved by curating a number of experiments such as helping them make a light up crown. The experiments were very well received that we have been asked to come back again this year.

Creative Tuition Collection and British Antarctic Survey (BAS)

In July, we had the opportunity to work with a Bristol based charity who look to support children from low-income backgrounds, marginalised and underrepresented communities. We spent an afternoon with a group of 13 - 16 year-olds educating them on the effects of climate change through 2 experiments, discussions and activities. The event took place over Zoom and the children were sent the packages in advance to ensure they had everything they needed for the day to go smoothly.

Financial Review

Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves:

Cash at bank at 22/09/2022 was £2,254.39. The main financial risk to the charity is a loss of a main funding source – currently this is Clarion Housing Association and reduced partnerships. Currently, the funds are held to cover 2.5 months operational costs in the event of a total loss of income and to meet any unforeseen expenditure that may occur.

Our main source of funds this year has been grants which we have been fortunate enough to receive from two sources – Clarion Housing Association and JP Morgan. We received a few donations but nothing in comparison to the grants we received. We received a lump sum from JP Morgan of £7,500.00 and we received 3 quarterly grants from Clarion Futures – 2 lots of £1,572.00 and one payment of £2,248.00. The grants we receive allow us to send science resources to children free of charge and allow the children to partake in both our online and physical sessions, providing them with snacks also free of charge. The payments also allow us to pay for all the material we use, the hiring of the centres, staff costs, uniforms and DBS costs.

Other optional information

In terms of Sci4Us’ future:

After seeing what we were able to achieve by August 2022, we have very high expectations of what we can achieve in a year's time.

In terms of services, we will be offering running an after-school club as one of our weekly services. In addition, with the opening of our new centre in Penge, we now have the capacity to reach a minimum of 35 children from our physical sessions alone.

As a charity, we will continue partnering with other likeminded charities and organisations. With more funding we will also be able to start utilising LinkedIn Ads too which will give us a chance to connect with even more charities than we did in the past year. And already this year , we will be working with Tumino Kids again at the end of the month which will enable us to educate around 60 children. So through partnerships alone, we will expect to reach over 250 children.

This means that by August 2023, using our data from the past year, we would expect to reach close to 583 children which is almost double the number we reached last year.
