Report for Lola's homeless ladder September 2021 to September 2022
Lola’s Homeless Ladder is a charity organisation set up for the public benefit, the relief and assistance of people in The London Borough of Newham and adjacent boroughs who are in need by reason of homelessness or being at risk of homelessness, including those in insecure accommodation, and those who are in need due to financial hardship, in particular, but not exclusively by providing items, services, and advice.
We help those in need on the streets, in hostels, in temporary and insecure accommodation, and those in financial hardship, both individuals and families.
Having supported over four hundred homeless clients placed in hostels and hotels during the COVID19 lockdown, most of whom we had regularly provided with toiletries, PPE, cleaning materials, and food bags throughout the course of the epidemic, in December 2021, with the lockdown finally lifted, we were able to provide a Christmas lunch, treats, and gifts for many of them. We also provided bags including small gifts and treats for those unable to attend and for street homeless, some of whom had left the accommodation provided or chosen not to accept the offer to be taken off the streets. These were delivered to Brother Julian’s at Helping Hands in Plaistow, the Memorial Church in Barking Rd, the Renewal programme, the Courtney Hotel, the Joy Foundation, the City View Hotel, St Fidelis Friary, and the Neville Hotel. We also provided children's Christmas gifts for eight refugee families living in hostels. For several nights, in the run-up to Christmas, volunteers, dressed as Santa and his elves, did drive-by deliveries of Christmas gifts for the children of families in need, and to Sunndale Court, a home for the elderly, providing much jollity and entertainment in the process.
During the lockdown, we had shopped in bulk wherever possible, clocking up many miles to find available bargains, and as a result, our own food bank was able to provide hundreds of bags of shopping for families in need and individuals, including disabled people who seemed to have fallen through the net provided by the local council. We have continued to provide bags of shopping for families and individuals in need throughout the year.
In February we moved our base which required the work and dedication of our volunteers, without whom it would not have been possible, and we thank them for all they have done.
We gave support to three young people who were leaving care and setting up in homes of their own by providing basic equipment that they would need to help them move towards independent living. We also provided them with new clothing which had been donated.
We furnished a two-bedroom flat for a family with children newly housed after living in one room. This was almost entirely achieved by donations of goods and equipment made in response to requests on our Facebook page. We simply have the best supporters.
We offered support to three previously homeless clients who were finally moved into permanent accommodation, providing them with basic necessities and equipment for their homes, as well as starter packs of toiletries, cleaning materials, and basic foodstuff.
Lorraine Tabone organised a street party in June 2022 for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, to which were invited Lola’s volunteers and their families, ten families in need and their children, ex-homeless clients who live nearby, local people and residents of a nearby Retirement home. We provided party
food and non-alcoholic drinks as well as fun, music, and games. A wonderful day was had by all. Thank you to all our donors and to our volunteers who made it possible.
We did a Bottled water appeal for those on the street during the very hot weather, which we were able to have delivered to points of access across the borough of Newham.
We have supported women with young children in a women’s refuge, providing them with kitchen equipment and clothing, as well as baby equipment.
Throughout the year we have continued to supply bags of shopping including toiletries and cleaning products to those in hardship. We also provide Tesco vouchers to families to enable people to make their own shopping choices. We continue to support the work of Care for Calais, and The Magpie project, whenever we can provide needed goods and equipment.
We thank our Trustees, our supporters, and regular donors without whom our work would not be possible.
As well as all this, our CEO Lorraine Tabone, has offered friendship and advice to those in despair, helping them access services, and supporting the work of several agencies and outreach workers in Newham.
She has spent many hours on the phone directly supporting clients, providing them with information about how they can get helped, where they can go for support, and encouraging them to take the help offered. She deals with social services, other support agencies, safeguarding teams, and sometimes the police, in her tireless efforts to get help for those in dire need. Without her, there would be no Lola’s Homeless Ladder.
