# Annual Report of Activities and Statement of Accounts for the year ending 31[st] December 2022

Joseph Aspdin Skills Trust (JAST) (Charity number 1195750)

Report of the Trustees for the year ending 31[st] December 2022

Introduction

JAST was formed as a charitable trust in 2021 and registered with the Charity Commission in September 2021, with a financial year running from 1 January to 31 December.

This report covers the period from registration up to 31[st] December 2022.

Objectives/Aims and Activities of the Charity

The charitable aims of JAST are twofold:

1. To promote the provision of training in the environmentally friendly adaption and rehabilitation of housing and other properties to give buildings which are ecologically sound and energy efficient.

2. To support the access of young people in West Yorkshire in these courses (especially young people between the ages of 16 and 25 in Postcode areas LS10 and LS11) and enable them to complete apprentices using these skills.

The main practical activities of JAST over this reporting period have been: financial support to the Leeds College of Building (LCB) for the recruitment and employment of a dedicated member of staff to teach students of LCB in "Green Skills"; and the building of contacts with other organisations (both statutory and voluntary) working in the same field. The aim of these contacts is to help JAST to identify the most important areas where it should focus its activities; and ultimately to identify resources to help JAST continue its work in the medium to longer term.

Appointment of JAST project Coordinator

Craig Goodall was recruited to the post and started work at LCB in July 2021. He has taught LCB students across the College throughout the academic year 2022-23.

Development of curriculum materials

Craig has developed teaching materials for LCB students across the College. They deal with the Zero-Carbon & Sustainability agenda, and dovetail into other material taught across the College. Material was prepared in time for the start of the Autumn term, and continued successfully throughout the academic year

Metrics were developed for both overall delivery, and to measure participation by students from the LS10 and LS11 areas.

A project report summarising the work done within the college is attached to this report.

Future Work

In addition to the continuing curriculum development within the College of Building, the Trust is now looking to extend its community work in LS10 and LS11.

JAST and LCB are working with the WY Mayor's Office and other FE Colleges in WY, to make the teaching materials freely available to other building studies students.

Work has begun to identify projects which will give practical training opportunities in "Green" skills to LCB students and build relationships with others working in the same field as JAST, particularly on retrofitting older buildings to make them "fit for the future".

Governance

The Trust was formed in September 2021, with an initial 4 Trustees:

Sir John Battle - Treasurer Dr Jackie Coates - Secretary Dr Geoff Driver Dr Ken Patterson - Chair

The Trustees met frequently as a group during the second half of 2021 to ensure the smooth set up of the Trust, and then to set out forward plans for 2022.

The Trustees met 3 times for Trust management and progress monitoring. Informal meetings also took place by Zoom, or with Leeds College of Building personnel.

At a special meeting of the Trustees in 2022, the Trust was pleased to be joined by Baroness Judith Blake.

Trustee members also welcomed Sir Frank McLoughlin as a valuable addition to the Trustees in late 2022.

Both were formalised as JAST Trustees with the Charity Commission in December 2022.

Thus the Trustees at 31st December were:

Sir John Battle - Treasurer Baroness Judith Blake Dr Jackie Coates - Secretary Dr Geoff Driver Sir Frank McLoughlin Dr Ken Patterson - Chair

Financial Review

All the initial income of JAST has been provided by a private donation, which is to support a 3-year programme of development and consolidation of charitable activities.

Funds were accrued during last half of 2021 in preparation for the recruitment, by the Leeds College of Building, of a Zero Carbon Skills coordinator. The coordinator came into post in early July 2022.

This recruitment has proven very successful, and both JAST and the college expressed their wish to make this a full 3-year appointment. This was done in early 2023.

No further funds were provided during 2022, as they were not needed; but the benefactor has guaranteed to fund the remainder of the project to at least the end of the academic year 2024-5.

The Trust uses the Unity Trust Bank to provide banking facilities.
