Section D Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

Hazelnut Bristol

- Hazelnut Church Bristol

This year we have continued to deepen our rhythms of Christian spirituality examples include Easter in the garden and Slow Christmas. We are working on developing a yearly rhythm of worship.

We have also started Grow and Explore to encourage our young people. Gigi Cheung has taken the lead and is doing a great job with 12 young people and 8 parents meeting monthly.

In the autumn we hired Bryony Davis as our Community Growing Enabler she started just after Easter 2023.

In the middle of March, we relocated to the garden at St. Anne’s Church in Eastern Bristol and have begun to develop the gourds whilst working with St. Anne’s Church.

This year we also became a Bishop's Mission Order with the Diocese of Bristol in the Church of England. This allows us to have representation and support structures within the Church of England.

-

Safeguarding

We have been pleased to have Jon Davis as our safeguarding officer at Hazelnut Bristol. Clare Fussell is our trustee with responsibilities for safeguarding.

This year we have worked with the Diocese of Bristol to have an up-todate rigorous safeguarding policy. We have continued to put policies in place to encourage safeguarding best practice. Our Trustees have now all been DBS checked as well. We have a standing item regarding safeguarding at every trustee meeting. This year we have had no safeguarding issues. Next year we will aim to continue to develop robust policies.

- Conservation

We are pleased to have received an award of Gold eco church from A Rocha UK for our conservation work. Practically we have developed community gardens with vegetables, fruit, and pollinator-friendly flowers in Upper Horfield and Lockleaze. We used no chemicals of any kind. We also planted wheat in several locations in Bristol and we have planted 8 plum and apple trees in local schools. We had 2 foraging walks led by Steve England.

We are also pleased to have hired Angus Lam as our Lead gardener. Angus works 4 hours a week as an independent contractor.

-

Giving food

Over the last year we have given back to the community 50% of what we have grown. We gave to Vench, a charity well established in Lockleaze, that gives veg boxes and cooks meals for young people whilst not in term time.

- Community engagement

We had a local primary school come and plant in our Lockleaze location. We created murals in Lockleaze. In Eden Grove we had a community open day with 500 people in attendance. We had other events including the harvest festival, Christmas around the fire, and Christmas cookie party.

-

Hong Kong

We have had a large number of families who have resettle from Hong Kong join our community. We have an average of 5 families come on a Sunday to our Church service with new families coming each week.

-

Collaboration

We built a community garden for GKN Aerospace. We had over 1000 visitors to our sites this year.

Network

-

Conference

Our Sustaining Church conference had speakers from around the world on zoom. We had 200 people in attendance.

- Potting shed

In January we are starting Potting shed. A weekly program for Christian groups who want to start growing projects. Our first year has seen 20 groups sign up with an average weekly attendance of 28 people. These groups are across the UK. We are already seeing this ecumenical training. This year we ran two more courses and have now trained over 50 groups.

-

Growing Collective

All of this is building a network called the Collective that encourages communities to engage creatively with agriculture, worship and climate emergency. The growing collective is now up to 30 different communities across the UK. We now have our first international partner Mudacretza from the Democratic Republic of the Congo
