## AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
To promote the objectives of Riding for the Disabled Association, incorporating carriage driving, by providing disabled people with the opportunity to ride and/or to carriage drive to benefit their health and well-being in the North Midlands.
We aim to make horse riding available to children and young people whatever their physical, sensory, or learning impairment and whatever their financial circumstances. The charitable need thus addressed encompasses each individual rider’s family; social circle; and extends to their peer groups.
**Public Benefit Statement:** The Trustees confirm that they have complied with their duty in section 17 of the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit, 'Charities and Public Benefit'.

**THIS CHARITY BELIEVES IN THE SOCIAL MODEL OF DISABILITY and strives to match each individual riding client with an experience appropriate to their unique challenges.**
HISTORY: By 2025 we will have been providing opportunities for Exercise, Therapy, and Fun through horse-riding for youngsters with disabling challenges for more than 54 years. All is achieved through the goodwill of our Volunteers, some of whom have been there since the beginning.
All started in 1971 at Woodside Farm Stables, Rainworth, Nottinghamshire, the home of Jack and Anita Parker. Mansfield & District RDA as a group evolved into Woodside Farm Stables RDA, becoming full members of RDA UK in June 1986.
In 1998 changes in Charity law meant the formation of individual Charities. Woodside Farm Stables RDA Registered Charity 1074298 was inaugurated in November 1998 and continued until the Summer of 2019.
In November 2019 the Charity relocated to Eastfield Farm in King’s Clipstone, with a bright future ahead. The Covid pandemic was a setback. Plans had to be shelved, revenue was lost, and newly recruited volunteers asked to place their commitment on hold. Many keen candidates channelled their energies elsewhere and were lost to RDA. This was a huge disappointment for everyone involved, and at a time when reserves had been depleted by the cost of the move and rehabilitation of horses to their new environment. The Charity will forever be grateful for the annual support of the Sir John Eastwood Foundation; and all those grant making organisations associated with Forever Notts (formerly the Nottinghamshire Community Foundation) which has been a lifeline crucial for the Charity’s future.
2020 and beyond: We had a huge waiting list for places, testament to the need for a service such as ours and one available locally. In an attempt to expand and meet the need, we developed an ongoing recruitment and training programme for volunteers in all aspects of horse and charity management. Futureproofing was key as a significant number of our volunteers were reaching or beyond retirement age. Challenges to change were legion, all hampered by lockdown, but in September 2021, in order to support future expansion and to give more protection and thus attract people willing to become Trustees, Woodside Farm Stables RDA converted to Greenwood Riding for the Disabled Association, a Charitable Incorporated Organisation registered with the Charity Commission under number 1195708

## HOW DOES HORSE RIDING HELP?
A healthy body and mind rely on EXERCISE. An inability to move muscles and joints impaired through disability or trauma has consequences for otherwise healthy body parts. The impact of many disabilities or remedial medication may mean that individuals cannot cope with the noise or excitement associated with most competitive sports. Individuals with disabling conditions are familiar with having things done TO them or FOR them, rarely BY them. Horse riding offers an alternative:

## OUR PRIMARY GOAL – the therapeutic benefits
These benefits may not be obvious, especially for those who have never ridden and are not familiar with horses. But parents soon become aware of progress and express their delight in improved posture and confidence displayed by their children soon after starting. Fun on a horse is liberating for our young clients and respite from clinical appointments where all is done **to them** or **for them** but never **by them.** The horse is the motive power. Riding stimulates the rider even those parts which cannot function independently. It is especially important to maintain such a service locally. Managing travel arrangements around the needs of a disabled child, perhaps accompanied by siblings, can be stressful and discouraging. No more than a 15 → 20 minute commute is the ideal.
We are serious about safeguarding. Our Volunteers are fully DBS checked to enhanced level, and we encourage parents/carers to become involved. Training is given which helps to ensure sufficient support on any given day to meet our health and safety standards.
We retain membership of RDA UK (Charity 244108) for insurance and Coach accreditation purposes. Statistics determine the level of membership we pay them.
OUR VOLUNTEERS are the foundation for what we achieve. Such essential support would not be viable within a commercial employment setting. The strategy is WIN-WIN since volunteers themselves benefit from the joy of being part of our riders’ achievements. They embrace exercise with a purpose (with no gym fees!). Involvement can add value to retirement plans; to each volunteer’s CV for those seeking employment or further education; and sometimes provide welcome respite from care commitments at home. All can benefit from training opportunities, and teamwork bridges the generation gap,

## A REVIEW OF OUR ACTIVITIES
We are still at the mercy of the weather since all activities involve the outdoors but hope to change that. Despite seasonal extremes we have managed to accommodate 10 of the riders from our very long waiting list during the period under report. We always have more potential clients than we can cater for.
Our horses: New member of the equine team, Pye, arrived in September 2024 – Pye has taken time to settle into his job. Everything is new when a horse moves home – new friends and pecking orders to cope with; an unfamiliar farrier and Vets with vaccinations; worm counts + wormers; strange field companions; not forgetting the dentist - and all with new human carers who might not understand his language.
Here Pye expressed his displeasure at a temporary change of stable, especially with someone else’s name on the door! We still don’t know how he did it!

## EXAMPLES OF FEEDBACK from our service users:
Greenwood RDA is a wonderful charity that demonstrates that change is possible and brilliant ideas combined with commitment and dedication can change lives.
We have been lucky enough to have had the pleasure of taking our daughter to riding lessons here for over two years and it has fundamentally changed our family’s life for the better.
As parents we have definitely seen the development of her confidence from being a part of the RDA, this is evidenced by the growth with her skills in socialising with other young people of differing ages and becoming free to express herself.
The happiness as a parent from seeing her actively taking part in riding a horse and enjoying every moment, when other riding schools in the area openly told us “No” or that “It would not be safe”.
The freedom to be herself in a safe, nurturing environment with a dedicated team that is focused on giving children that chance in life that builds skills for life, resilience, responsibility and a personal sense of accomplishment.
As they build that relationship with the horses and the team and over time go from being the new person, to a confident rider that is willing to show others what to do.
## A truly brilliant charity.
“I can’t say enough good things about the charity. The impact on A is huge – it’s all she thinks about all week. The riding gives A. confidence and it’s something she can do that other children cannot. A. takes her rosettes and certificates into school, and she can talk about them”.
When asked if there were any positives for herself, Mum said “Oh yes I don’t have to explain as you all understand. It is often difficult to go to different places, but you are like family. Sometimes the only break I have all week is this half hour; it gives me time to relax and be accepted”.
The overall positive impact of riding with Greenwood’s for my daughter is unmeasurable. Coming from a non-horse-riding family, I was initially sceptical of how riding could be beneficial for my daughter with SEND, but have witnessed first-hand how spending time with horses and the Greenwood’s team has allowed my daughter 30 minutes of pure bliss each week. Every Saturday, she cannot wait to go riding and spends the whole time smiling from ear to ear.
This charity is truly transformative. I would recommend them to anyone else.

**And from a long-term Volunteer:** The core team of Volunteers have been together for many years which in itself is testament to how much they get out of their involvement. New recruits quickly embrace the vision and enjoy their role in delivering regular horse related therapy sessions. Volunteers bond into a family like support network – for our young riders, their families, and for each other when times get tough. The experience becomes a lifeline promoting fitness and good physical and mental health, all whilst providing a valuable service for those with diverse challenges

We could not achieve what we do without the background support of the farm personalities – **Farmers Phil (left) and Stef (below) with tractor.** Our horses are well used to the machinery deployed round the farm.
As a working farm Eastfield works with nature. This year **Chicory** gave an impressive blue display, grown to aid crop pollination with the seeds later in the season providing food for birds and other wildlife.

## FINANCIAL REPORT – money and other resources
Each year the majority of our expenses relate to horse-care and associated costs and can be classed as “running expenses” which tend to be unpopular with many grant aid funders. It is vital that we raise sufficient resources to meet that commitment. No horses, no service.
Forever Notts – the Community Foundation for Nottinghamshire has proved a crucial lifeline for our future. As experts in local need they are first port of call for local donors who
want to be sure their money is used responsibly and well. In support of their evolution from Nottinghamshire Community Foundation to Forever Notts we collaborated in the production of a short video promoting our charity and their supporting role. On reflection videos, outdoors on a working farm, involving children and animals, are not our forté – yet!
Finances are a perennial challenge, especially since we want to maintain our donations-only policy, which guarantees that every child who needs us can afford to come.
Our accounts for year ended March 2025 are printed on pages 16→19. As our fundraising efforts resulted in the charity exceeding the threshold for a formal Independent Examination, we again commissioned Community Accounting Plus to do this.
Reclaimed Gift-Aid – continues to be a significant addition to our funds, especially since its use is unrestricted, so can be used towards Veterinary costs. We have a contingency plan within our reserves for veterinary emergencies, but such are unpredictable and immediately payable. Reclaimed Gift-Aid for the financial year under report was £1,239 and is already predicted to exceed that for year ending March 2026.
FUNDRAISING – is not just about raising money, but in promoting involvement and inspiring people to believe in what we do.
We held a very successful **Big Easter Raffle** in April, raising an impressive £334. Thank-you to Glyn Jackson for organising this, and to Chair of Trustees, Chris Bagguley for managing the draw.

To fit in with the farming calendar we held our popular Summer Fair in June this year. We had planned to include a Dog Show but in the event, we cancelled this because of the heat.
The day was an astounding success, raising £1,833.64 for our Charity. All credit to the hard work of the Volunteers, and to Yvonne who co-ordinated all, with the help of husband Dave. And as usual a resounding thank-you to Noble Foods, based in Bilsthorpe, for supplying the eggs for our bakers, who are gaining a reputation for their cakes.
Plants were as popular as ever, as was the Tombola. Thanks to Linda behind the stall on the day and to all who donated prizes.
And to the crafters who again gifted their creativity to swell our funds.
The verdict of one visiting parent who was obviously impressed:
“I'm so thrilled the fun fair was another success, and as always, proud to be part of it. The huge dedication and effort that go into organizing it truly pays off, and it's wonderful to see it grow and thrive each year. I'm very proud of everyone in our lovely team and I'm sure that this day will always hold a very special place in my memories.” (AS)

PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: During this period, we have concentrated on consolidating a firm foundation and overcoming the remaining challenges. We still have a vision for an indoor school combined with activity area cum meeting/training room because being at the mercy of the weather is disruptive and frustrating. We have two ponies facing retirement with funds towards only one replacement so far. We need to retain our donations-only policy for riders. We want to ensure that every child who needs us can afford to come. Duke of Edinburgh placements remain part of our strategy. We must also be aware of the impact of the weather on this year’s harvest and consequently the effect on costs. The hay crop is 60% down on last year.
But nothing is guaranteed unless we can recruit enough suitably qualified volunteers – for capacity management and succession planning. We already have a wonderful core team, but the demographics of this area tend to mean candidates favour paid employment so have less free time to volunteer. And youngsters need to concentrate on educational goals so can only commit part-time, however welcome.
FINANCIAL PLANNING: Grant funders may be sure that any money given for specific projects is used for purpose. Our strategy is two-fold – to prioritise ongoing care and emergencies using unrestricted funding. If we have a vision but no specific supporting funds, then we wait until we do.
**General Donations** are accepted on the strict understanding that the money will be used solely for the benefit of the Charity. We are registered for **Gift Aid** which promises a significant return for year ending March 2026. Grant Funders expect any residual amounts not spent for purpose to be returned and our accounting processes reflect that. We abide by the **Fundraising Regulator’s Code of Practice.** The Charity remains committed to clear integrity in
all activities particularly how donations are spent. Should the worst happen and closure become inevitable our Constitutional dissolution clause protects any residual resources for use for similar purposes within Nottinghamshire.
RESERVES POLICY: The Charity has a duty of care to the ponies who are key to delivering our service. They are part of the Greenwood RDA family. Age-related conditions inevitably mean a lighter work-load; extra Vet costs and a pathway of nurturing towards full retirement. Care costs are constant whether or not horses are in full work. Our Reserves Policy has served us well in ensuring we have sufficient funds to meet those commitments when times are tight. **We have no free reserves.** The allocation, reviewed annually, is analysed as part of the year-end accounts. (see page 18)
POLICIES and NETWORKING: in addition to the Reserves Policy we have a comprehensive range of operating guidelines including Equal Opportunities and Safeguarding. All are reviewed regularly. We have networking links with local Councils for Voluntary Services and the wider voluntary sector network in Nottinghamshire. We are members of the NCVO [National Council for Voluntary Organisations] and remain affiliated to Riding for the Disabled Association Charity 244108 [Company Limited by Guarantee 5010395] [President H.R.H. The Princess Royal, KG, KT, GCVO, QSO].

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of Greenwood Riding for the Disabled Association incorporating Carriage Driving for the year ended 31 March 2025.
## **Responsibilities and basis of report**
As the Trustees of the Charity, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).
I report in respect of my examination of the Charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

The Charity is a livery client at Eastfield Farm (a family-owned working farm) currently responsible for 4 equines. All Volunteers deployed with no paid employees
**Previous Financial Year** covered from 1st April 2023 until 31st March 2024. Greenwood RDA was originally inaugurated with the Charity Commission in September 2021.
