Trustees Report for the year ended 31[st] December 2022

The Hope Project has been in operation in Lesvos Island, Greece since 2015. Our aim is to provide aid, physical goods, services, support and advice to refugees.

Alongside this during 2022 we provided educational and skill building activities. The project provided a safe and secure environment for those seeking safety. We had two consultants for daily operations and social media along with 10 community volunteers. We tried to provide two meals a day for the volunteers helping out with the distribution of aid as well as weekly food support to the Art group.

We provided residents of the neighbouring refugee camp with items that they needed for their day to day living i.e, clothing and toiletries and occasionally pharmacy items.

We also endevoured to cover special needs requests such us additional items for babies, i.e blankets, nappies, toiletries and clothing.

The appointment system in place, instituted during the pandemic to deal with new arrivals at the camp, has been kept as it proved very useful to keep a record and deal with new service users on a one to one basis allowing us to provide what is really needed and minimise waste.

Throughout 2022, we relied mainly on material and financial donations to fulfill the need for clothing and other items. There were approximately 1500 residents in the camp. This meant that the distribution of clothing was done at a fast pace and certain items ran out frequently.

Alongside our distribution efforts, our Art Project continued. As well as covering fine art and classes for those less skilled, we established an area for experimental and abstract art. This has proved very popular with the artists of all abilities as a way of expressing themselves but also to have fun and a break from the extremely challenging conditions in the camp.

Independent examiner’s report to the trustees of Hope Project (Lesvos)

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the Hope Project (Lesvos) (the Trust) for the year ended 31 December 2022.

Responsibilities and basis of report

As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

Independent examiner’s statement

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by section 130 of the Act; or

2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or

3. the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

Hope project (Lesvos) was previously contained within a Prism collective fund. The retained funds total within Prism of £87,002 were transferred to Hope Project (Lesvos) at the start of 2022 once Hope project (Lesvos) was registestered as a charity in its own right.
