STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT

Trustee selection methods

The Trustee Board is responsible for appointing new trustees subject to requirements set out in the Charity’s governing documents. Potential new trustees are assessed on the basis of their experience, skills and motivation, as well as the Trustee Board’s own assessment of its gaps and the skills required to deliver the Charity’s strategy. This is primarily assessed through a candidate’s CV and meeting with one or more of the existing trustees.

Additional governance protections

Christians for Impact has a conflict of interests policy. This policy and the associated register is reviewed at least annually.

Christians for Impact works closely with its USA counterpart, Christians for Impact USA, Inc., a registered (501(c)(3) organisation in the USA, EIN: 87-3363768), in ways that further its own charitable objects.

ACTIVITIES AND OBJECTIVES

Background to understanding the activities carried out by Christians for Impact

Christians For Impact’s activities from 24th August 2021 to 30th June 2022 can be split into three categories:

1. UK Community Building

Christians for Impact contracted two outreach specialists in the UK who raised awareness about effective altruism and high-impact charity to their respective audiences and communities, especially those surrounding universities at University of Warwick and and University of Durham. It held several networking events among volunteers in and around London, in furtherance of the organisation’s charitable objectives. It cooperated with contractors of Christians for Impact USA, Inc. who hired numerous additional outreach specialists and also provided 1-on-1 career mentorship for members of the UK community. Christians for Impact also planned a retreat, which would take place later in 2022 in Cambridge. It received a grant for this from the Centre for Effective Altruism UK.

2. Effective Altruism for Christians Website

Christians for Impact volunteers, as well as contractors hired by Christians for Impact USA, Inc. updated and added to the website: www.eaforchristians.org. A large percentage of website viewers live in the UK.

3. Online Events and Videos

Many online events were held by our organisation, most notably the 2022 Annual Conference (www.eaforchristians.org/2022-annual-conference) which had over virtual 100 attendees, about half of whom are based in the UK, and weekly discussions with an average attendance of 12 people. We also developed online educational material, including an introductory video, which can be found here www.youtube.com/@eaforchristians460

A commitment to creating a public benefit

All decisions taken by Trustees were taken solely with concern to creating benefits for the eventual beneficiaries, and any benefit to the immediate community was incidental to achieving this aim.

Beneficiaries

When considering the projects undertaken it is helpful to distinguish between the immediate community and the eventual beneficiaries:

3

skill and money. They represent as diverse a group as charitable causes cover, including but not limited to people living in poverty in developing countries, future generations who might be impacted by climate change or abused animals.

For example, Christians for Impact ran one event attended by Christian philanthropic finance professionals. At this event the guests from the immediate community received talks from speakers with experience of making large donations. Yet the aim of the event was to encourage guests to increase the size and effectiveness of their donations for the benefit of the eventual beneficiaries.

Activities

The 2021-22 fiscal year was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This reduced the number of in-person events that Christians for Impact hosted, but did not have a significant adverse effect on the charity’s ability to deliver against its objects. While these events may have been less engaging for participants than in-person events, they meant that people were able to participate from outside London and in some cases outside the UK.

Here is an overview of our key activities:

Research There are a number of existing charitable organisations that
carry out research to help people to do good more effectively.
For example the Centre for Effective Altruism (a registered
charity in England and Wales, Charity Number 1149828),
GiveWell (501(c)(3) organisation in the USA, EIN: 20-8625442)
and Animal Charity Evaluators (501(c)(3) public charity in the
USA, EIN 36-4684978). Christians for Impact did not carry out
significant amounts of original research or independent charity
vetting but did invest time into understanding the existing
research available in order to best be able to promote concern
for the efficiency and effectiveness of charities. It also produced
research into the intersection of relevant aspects of Christian
teaching and effective altruism, a collection of which is located at
our website: www.eaforchristians.org

Note on restricted funds

We received one restricted grant and that was from the Centre for Effective Altruism for a forthcoming educational retreat. All restricted grants are earmarked for activities which are consistent with the objects of Christians for Impact. As of 30th June 2022, our restricted grant was left in reserves to be used in the next financial period to cover costs for the educational retreat, which took place in the Fall of 2022.

Additional details of objectives and activities

Contribution made by volunteers

The Charity benefits from significant contributions of time by approximately 20 individuals, including trustees. The Charity also encourages individuals to contribute time to other charities and projects if it is likely they will have more impact that way.

ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE

UK Community Building

Our two outreach specialists in the UK report had combined over 25 1-on-1 conversations with individuals about effective altruism and high-impact charity. As a result, 3 individuals reported giving more money away to charity and 4 reported changing more than half of their giving to more effective charities. 1 individual took the GWWC Pledge, which the UK Charity Giving What We Can Trust (Charity number 1155773) estimates is worth about $73,000 USD in donations to effective charities. There were additional community benefits, which were supported by both the organisation and its US counterpart, which are detailed our “Our Impact” page at our website: www.eaforchristians.org/our-impact.

Effective Altruism for Christians Website

The organisation’s website, www.eaforchristians.org grew in content and viewership. Over this period the average number of monthly visitors increased from about 500 to 700.

Online Events and Videos

Many online events were held by our organisation, most notably the 2023 Annual Conference (www.eaforchristians.org/2022-annual-conference) which had over 100 virtual attendees, about half of whom are based in the UK, and weekly discussions with an

average attendance of 12 people. We also created and uploaded dozens of videos to youtube, and gained about 100 subscribers, which can be found here www.youtube.com/@eaforchristians460.

FINANCIAL REVIEW

Note on reserves

Christians for Impact aims to hold enough reserves for between 2 and 4 months of expenditure, in accordance with our finance policy.

As of 30 June 2022, the restricted cash balance was £5,419.24, which was sufficient reserves for approximately 4 months of expenditure, primarily for an upcoming event. The lack of unrestricted reserves is due to the fact that the bank account was only recently opened (in March) and we were still in the process of setting up gift aid through HRMC to receive unrestricted donations.

Funds materially in deficit

No funds are materially in deficit.

Further financial review details regarding fundraising

All of the funds raised for Christians for Impact by 30 June 2022 were from one of two sources: the Centre for Effective Altruism (UK charity number 1149828) and our US partner Christians for Impact USA, inc.

We did not engage in fundraising, though we did take about 1 hour to write a grant proposal to the Centre for Effective Altruism.

DECLARATION

The trustees declare that they have approved the trustees’ report above.
