## **Activities Phoenix have offered between 2023-2024 include:**

## **THE WILDERNESS EXPERIENCE**

The Wilderness Experience took place on a remote farm in North Wales. There were eight beneficiaries. The beneficiaries took part in outdoor activities as well as therapeutic groups and one-to-one sessions. The aim of the experience was to connect recovering individuals by establishing a supportive community.

The 5-day experience built confidence and esteem, inspired and equipped beneficiaries with tools for their recovery. As a result of beneficiary evaluations, we have developed the experience further, taking feedback into account. One beneficiary said that the wilderness experience gave her the opportunity to find herself again.

Following the success of the Wilderness Experience in 2024, we are currently recruiting individuals for two further trips in 2025.

## **Aftercare**

The Wilderness Experience Aftercare support consists of a 6-month therapeutic 12-step based programme consisting of group and one-to-one therapy sessions. This is open and available to all participants.

## **ADVOCACY**

Phoenix directed over 30 beneficiaries to other organisations, including Mind, Citizens Advice, in-patient detox units and private rehab facilities, to name a few. We believe that alcoholism and/or drug addiction are only symptoms, and that it takes a variety of support to help people who are battling addiction reclaim their lives.

We cultivate trusting relationships to put the right support in place. We also advocate for the right housing, benefits, mental health care, debt relief and other services, by completing referrals. We helped several beneficiaries access appropriate housing; some were rough sleepers whilst others were in temporary accommodation. One beneficiary has been moved to a safe place after suffering domestic abuse.

## **SAFE SPACE**

Phoenix ran a weekly safe space throughout 2023-2024. This was a safe, creative, and supported environment for those attempting to rebuild their lives. This safe space helped us build relationships and refer and advocate, giving individuals a real chance at recovery.

Sessions included meditation, walks in nature, creative activities, workshops, and group discussions. It was an opportunity for beneficiaries to connect instead of isolating. The safe space is enjoyable, informative, and social with a mix of activities including walking outdoors in nature and soon to include a sound-bath meditation.

## **Treatment Provision**

Phoenix provided in-patient drug and alcohol detoxes for several individuals by working in partnership with Hertford Town Council and Druglink (Hemel Hempstead).

Phoenix also provided one-to-one therapy for individuals who were unable to access statutory or privately funded addiction treatment.

Family interventions have also been facilitated by fully-qualified Addiction Therapists in order to address the needs of our beneficiaries and their loved-ones.

## **Achievements**

It has been a year of remarkable growth for the charity, with our annual income almost tripling. Existing programmes have evolved, driven by valuable feedback from our beneficiaries.

In August 2024, we proudly opened our first charity shop in Hertford town centre. This initiative has created a welcoming safe space, volunteer opportunities, and a source of sustainable income for the charity.

The Wilderness Experience proved

so successful that we secured funding to run two programmes instead of one, effectively doubling our impact. Our Safe Spaces initiative has established a secure and supportive community where isolated individuals in recovery continue to connect over a year later.

We were successful raising funds. We received a £28,000 grant from Hertford Town Council for the detox programme. We obtained a grant from The National Lottery for the Wilderness Experience for £20,000. The Charles Plater Trust awarded us £5000 for The Wilderness Experience. The Albert Hunt Trust awarded us £5000 for our Walk & Talk project. Our unrestricted fundraising campaigns have been a tremendous success, with thousands of pounds raised— including from individuals who leapt 13,000 feet from a plane to support our cause.

Our advocacy has seen individuals moved in to appropriate housing, claim and backdate benefits and access the specialist support they need to make changes in their lives

Partnerships with Hertford Town Council have enabled us to offer fully funded in-patient medical detoxes, and strong relationships with rehabilitation centres have ensured beneficiaries receive the treatment they need. One-toone therapy sessions have been transformative for many of our service users.

The charity’s growth has been extraordinary, and we look forward to fostering developing partnerships and the exciting opportunities they will bring.
