HELPING HOMELESS VETERANS UK HELPING HOMELESS VETERANS UK Registered Charity no. 1195521 Trustees Statement 2024 It is our pleasure to publish the accounts for our last financial period which ended on the 315t of August 2024. Once again, this year has simply been exceptional for Helping Homeless Veterans UK and unfortunately our caseloads have seemed like they are never ending at times. This has been without doubt our busiest year since our formation in September 2019 with 149 Veterans reaching out to us for some form of help due to either facing homelessness or being homeless. With the cost-of-living crisis really taklng a hold on our veterans, finances, as well as many private landlords using no fault eviction, section 21 to legally evict veterans who are tenants in their properties, we have really seen a very worrying escalation of veterans needing our help, Over the past financial period, we have helped to house in some way exactly 102 veterans which has been extremely difficult due to trying to find affordable accommodation. However, working with over 80 local authorities has certainly helped our cause and we have proven on many occasions that our knowSedge of legislation is second to none and has helped house many veterans into social housing when it has been available. This knowledge is now causing many issues for Local Authorities as they see their own budgets dwindling as well as the complete lack of social housing after many years of neglect in this sector from Westminster. The very large rise in prevention duties is also increasing for our charity and due to the cost of living, we have had many veterans contacting us since they must make the choice of paying their rent or feeding themselves and sometimes their families. We cannot see any change in this issue and having a new government in place only seems to have exasperated this problem and we are finding that more and more veterans are having to rely on help from charities like our own. HELPING HDMELESS VETERANS UK We have been very fortunate to have Tesco's supporting us this year by allowing us to collect in their store at Tower Park in Poole, Dorset and we are extremely grateful for this ongoing support as it also helps us to raise awareness of our charity work with the public, However, with the significant costs involved with feeding veterans and the continued rise in the cost of food from supermarkets, it is great cause for alarm and unfortunately, we cannot see things improving soon. We are constantly seeing Veterans who need assistance from our charity as they must decide whether they buy food or pay for heating and having electricity in their homes. It is frightening that currently we have Veterans who have served our Country in HM Armed Forces and are now facing this dilemma. In April 2023, we opened our first property solely for the use by Veterans who have nowhere else to go and this has proven to be a resounding success. We have always said that when you bring veterans together with veterans they will look after themselves as they understand each other's needs, The income from rent that we receive from The Talbot Mews has helped us cover our daily expenses in running our charity as well as helped towards the costs involved in our next project. This means that if the public donates to our charity, then Ihat donation is solely spent on helping veterans. This financial period has also seen us purchase our very own new van for the charity. Our new Mercedes Sprinter has a bigger payload to carry even more furniture and equipment and is more modern and cost effectlve as we have no maintenance costs involved due to the agreement, we have with Sandown Mercedes who have been excellent with our charity and the van has proven already to be a major asset in our portfolio. With The new Ford Ranger which is more economical to run on fuel as well as having all mechanical costs covered as we have a repair warranty in place we now have a fleet of vehicles that are reliable and more suitable for the day to day running of our charity. Over this financial year we have been working very hard to gain planning permission for an old nightclub in Llanelli West Wales and we are hoping to convert this property into 16 one bed units with a Veterans Hub also in place. This is a huge project that has the support of The Welsh Senedd as well as The veterans minister for Wales and Carmarthenshire Council. We are hoping to move ahead with this project in the next financial period for our charity. Helpiiig HomEless Veterans UK l Trustoos Statemont | 2023 Page2013
HELPING HOMELESS VETERANS UK Finally. as trustees we would like to state that without the support of the public and the generosity of so many people, we simply would not have been able to help so many veterans. As you can see from our accounts, we have raised substantial funds from online fundraising using our JustGiving Platform as well as Facebook Fundraising and attending the many events we have either organised ourselves or attended throughout the year. This is simply awe- inspiring that throughout these difficult times, we can raise these funds. We must also thank our Volunteer Fundraisers for all their efforts this period and for giving up so much of their own time to raise funds to help our country's veterans. We know that our next financial period will be a challenging one, but the team of Trustees are working extremely hard behind the scenes to help our Country's Homeless Veterans as the growth of our charity continues. Here is to another successful year ahead.
