Aim and Purposes

Good Neighbour Church England (GNCE) is dedicated to promoting the advancement of the Christian faith in the United Kingdom and globally. Additionally, we focus on the relief of those in need, particularly those who are vulnerable or marginalized due to age, disability, ill-health, financial hardship, or other disadvantages. This is achieved through the provision of funds, goods, and practical support.

GNCE is guided by its motto:

"Act justly, love mercy, walk humbly, and continue to fight together with God."

Objectives and Activities

As a church with roots in Hong Kong, GNCE’s primary service target is the Hong Kong diaspora, many of whom have relocated to the United Kingdom in recent years under the British National Overseas Visa Programme or through asylum. Our goal is to build a community of mutual support - both spiritual and practical - through regular worship and various gatherings. Over time, we aim to extend our services to meet the needs of the broader local community.

In alignment with our motto, GNCE provides the following services across its worship and service points in the UK:

Achievements and Performance

1. Worship and Discipleship

GNCE continued to provide regular Cantonese worship services, prayer meetings, and Bible study groups, primarily serving members of the Hong Kong diaspora. These gatherings remained central to the life of the church, offering spiritual support, pastoral care, and a sense of belonging for individuals and families navigating life in the UK.

2. Community Care Initiatives

Home Kitchen Community Café – Birmingham

During 2024/2025, GNCE launched Home Kitchen, a community café based at the Birmingham church premises. The café was established to serve the local community by providing affordable, warm meals and drinks in a welcoming and safe environment.

1

Home Kitchen became a point of connection not only for members of the church but also for local residents, offering hospitality, conversation, and practical support. The initiative reflected GNCE’s commitment to “loving mercy” by responding to needs within the immediate neighbourhood.

Support for the Homeless Community

As part of the Home Kitchen outreach, GNCE opened its doors to individuals experiencing homelessness, offering hot meals and refreshments. This work was undertaken with compassion and a desire to provide dignity and warmth to those facing severe hardship.

Through this experience, the trustees became aware of the significant operational, safeguarding, and capacity challenges involved in providing ongoing support to individuals with complex needs. As a result, the trustees carefully reviewed the scope of this work to ensure that GNCE’s activities remained appropriate, sustainable, and aligned with the charity’s resources and governance responsibilities.

The experience informed the trustees’ approach to future community engagement, reinforcing the importance of partnership working, clear boundaries, and safeguarding considerations when serving vulnerable groups.

3. Reflection and Learning

The year was one of learning and discernment for GNCE. While motivated by compassion and faith-driven service, the trustees recognised the importance of balancing responsiveness to need with the charity’s operational capacity and governance framework. This period of reflection has helped shape a more focused and sustainable approach to future community work.

Volunteers

GNCE’s activities during the year were supported by the dedication and commitment of volunteers, particularly in the delivery of worship, hospitality, and community meals. The trustees wish to express their sincere thanks to all volunteers who gave their time, skills, and care in support of the charity’s mission.

Structure, Governance, and Management

GNCE is governed by an executive committee comprising three trustees, supported by executive officers overseeing finance, administration, and communications.

The trustees met regularly throughout the year to oversee the charity’s activities, monitor financial position, and ensure that operations were carried out in accordance with GNCE’s charitable objectives and legal responsibilities.
