Objectives and activities
For the public benefit to relieve the needs of those seeking asylum and those
granted refugee status and their dependents living in Mansfield and the surrounding
area, in particular.. a} to advance their education and training so as to advance them
in life and assist them to adapt within a new community., b) to preserve and protect
their physical and mental health,. c} to provide facilities for recreation or other leisure
time occupation with the object of improving the conditions of life of those persons
who have need of such facilities by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or
disablement, financial hardship or social and economic circumstances; and d) to
relieve their financial hardship.
Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit
Our main activities continue to be the offer of information, advice, and language
teaching, plus opportunities to meet and make friends locally through our
partnerships with other local organisations. During this last year we have made a
significant switch from supporting Syrian and other refugees to opening our services
up to asylum seekers from 'anywhere'. Managing this change while 'keeping the
peace, in Mansfield during a year of hotel arrivals and then closure has been
challenging. It has always been one of our objectives to support asylum seekers from

Maun Refuge
anywhere but local needs have made this more and more pressing over the last
couple of years, hence our decision to significantly expand our service user base.
The English language classes we run have been at a more basic level, according to
need., the introductions to UK services such as health, banking, schooling and
housing depend upon what stage in individual applications for'right to remain.
asylum seekers have reached. This work can be complicated and varied.. we have
benefitted from the voluntary support of longer- standing refugees particularly some
Syrians and one Sudanese, in interpretation and translation, as well as the voluntary
support of Mansfield people including our Trustees and other Mansfield
organisations from the wide ne￿Ork of concerned local charities and services.
Our service users have come from Sudan, Iran, Kurdistan, Afghanistan, Eritrea,
Ethiopia, etc., as well as Syria and Ukraine.
Public benefit statement
Opportunities to share their stories have been grasped by many refugees and
asylum seekers, sometimes working with our local authority staff as well as sporting
or cultural charities. We have facilitated swimming, cooking, running pop-up
restaurants, etc. and very popular market stalls selling food. The wish to integrate is
generally strong among our service users and we have taken advantage of this to
provide opportunities to meet, to demonstrate skills, and to appreciate cultural
differences. There are some impressive examples of success by refugees over the
decade that Maun Refuge has been working with them. We had hoped to set an
example of how a small town can benefit from and enjoy the new arrivals. Fingers
crossed, we do believe this is happening now.
The Trustees confim that they have complied with the duty in section 17 of the
Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to the Charity Commission's general guidance
on public benefit, 'Charities and Public Benefit,.
Summary of the main achievements during the period
In the year up to 30 September 2024, we have continued to support 35 refugees
from the 'SVPRS' {Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme), plus about 30
other refugees who arrived under different schemes. Of asylum seekers, the
numbers have been much higher- around 70.
Fundraising.. restricted funds of approx. £47,000 (income) have been raised for
salaries, teaching, IT and Room hire purposes and £30,000 for project purposes over
the year.
Citizenship.. we have continued to raise money from individual donors to pay a
proportion of the Syrians, UK citizenship. Two families (10 people) will qualify in the
year beginning September 2023 - October 2024. We have not committed ourselves
to continue to raise funds for this purpose after these latest ￿0 families have
succeeded.

Maun Refuge
The main acts'vities of the charty being advice and advocacy we have had less time
for events but we are hoping to hold more in the future. We are very grateful to our
funders and supporters and hope that next year is as busy and successful as this
