The charity is operated under the rules of its constitution adopted 6 August 2021.
Trustees are appointed annually by the Board of Maun Refuge members.
Maun Refuge has policies that govern our principles and practices.. they include
policies on behaviour, equal opportunities, financial control, health and safety,
personal boundaries, safeguarding children and adults, reserves, supervision and
volunteering.
DBS checks are carried out as required and volunteers have regular supervision and
support meetings.
The charity has five trustees who are responsible for its governan￿ and risk
management.
The trustees constitute Maun Refuge's main decision-making body, all of whom are
also volunteers contributing to the work of the charity. There is one paid staff post
(Project Manager) and duties are undertaken by two people as a job-share.
Maun Refuge liaises with the district and county local authorities, local and national
service providers, educational and health establishments, community and voluntary
services, etc., in order to best serve the interests - personal, educational and social -
of Syrian refugees and asylum seekers in Mansfield.

Maun Refuge
Objectives and activities
For the public benefit to relieve the needs of those seeking asylum and those
granted refugee status and their dependents living in Mansfield and the surrounding
area, in particular.. a) to advance their education and training so as to advance them
in life and assist them to adapt within a new community,. b) to preSe￿e and protect
their physical and mental health,. c) to provide facilities for recreation or other leisure
time occupation with the object of improving the conditions of life of those persons
who have need of such facilities by reason of their youth, age, infinmity or
disablement, financial hardship or social and economic circumstances,. and d} to
relieve their financial hardship.
Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit
Maun Refuge supports Syrian refugees who were brought to Mansfield under the
government's Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme. The charity
augments the basic shelter and access to services provided by the local council. We
do this by befriending, through cultural orientation, by working to encourage
Mansfield people to be welcoming and by promoting community cohesion.
Public benefit statement
The Trustees confirm that they have complied with the duty in section 17 of the
Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to the Charity Commission's general guidance
on public benefit, 'Charities and Public Benefit,.
Summary of the main achievements during the period
Staff
We have employed one FTE Project Manager since 2019 and the post was shared
by two people. During this year after one job-share staff resignation to take up a new
post, we only briefly managed to replace the job-share Project Manager post, so
decided to use the services of a Consultant until such time as our staff needs could
be suitably met in compliance with our funders, requirements. This has meant that
some work has not been done according to our plans, but volunteers, Trustees and
some of the Syrian refugees themselves have stepped up to carry on the activities
and support work.
Our partners
We have continued to work in liaison with the district and county local authorities,
local and national service providers, educational and health establishments,
community and voluntary services, etc., to best serve the interests-personal,
educational and social of Syrian refugees, asylum seekers and other displaced
people in Mansfield.
Our Funders
During this year we have relied largely on funding from the National Lottery
Community Fund, Mansfield's Community Fund and many others to provide for our
core funding and project work. Funders have been sympathetic to our refocussing on
'any diSpla￿d people,. Maun Refuge was set up to support Syrians but now reaches
many more and all the Syrians are pleased to support the newcomers.

Maun Refuge
What we have done
We have particularly tried to address the stresses created by Covid and lockdown
such as isolation and the rising cost of living. The refocussing of our work to include
supporting asylum seekers represents a major change of direction for which we will
re￿1ve a year's funding from the UKSPF grant. Continuing activities have included
ice-skating and woodcraft for children, swimming for both women and men, plus
summer visits to the seaside and The Deep in Hull. Educational needs have been a
high priority this year.. two young Syrians are now at university in Manchester, we
have continued to provide successful ESOL classes and bespoke support in other
subjects and areas of need such as health and safety, food hygiene, car
rna1ntenan￿, IT, fraud awareness, cake decorating, etc.
Citizenship
Outside the scope of the main funders has been the effort to help with the prohibitive
costs of citizenship applications for the Syrians - a high priority for them. Currently 24
Syrians have achieved citizenship thanks to hard work and their own fundraising.
Maun Refuge has provided a portion of the costs from a special citizenship fund -
money raised locally by the trustees, volunteers and friends.
Website
We apologise that our website (www.maunrefuge.org.uk) is currently out of date. It
will be updated soon.
The charity's policy on reserves
Over time, we aim to build up reserves totalling £6,000 (as per our Reserves Policy),
equivalent to 2-3 months running costs. The reserves will cover the consequences
should we need to close the Charity.
