CHAIRMAN’S ANNUAL REPORT 2025
2025 has been a difficult year for Eswatini and our two centres. The impact of world unrest/wars together with the withdrawal of a number of international charities has created high inflation and the consequential raising of the poverty level in the country to circa 70%. Many people are without work and many more vulnerable children require support.
Despite all this, the PIES centres have continued to provide that necessary feeding, pre-school education and care for the 220 children attending our centres on a daily basis. The centres are considered as places of excellence for the care of vulnerable children.
The global situation has also impacted on PIES charity fund-raising in the UK making it difficult to meet overall needs.
Our partnership with the Mbabane City Council is working well. The Council is assisting the centres to develop seed businesses which are starting to make an impact towards financial support of the centres. The existing vegetable gardening, sewing and honey production projects are expanding together with the introduction of additional initiatives for retail sale, for example, washing up liquid, peanut butter and chilli sauce production.
The Council are also providing ongoing medical support for the children in terms of health checks and vaccination programmes.
Our educational sponsorship scheme continues to provide access to full education for students. There are currently 17 high and 9 primary school children receiving full-time education thanks to sponsors in the UK supporting the scheme. In addition, we have circa 60 children currently attending pre-school at the centres.
We are proud to report that Decent Dlamini, one of our high school students, successfully completed his school education having been top in the class for the past 4 years. The final years examination placed Decent in the top 10 students in the country. He also excels in Mathematics and will represent Eswatini in the forthcoming African Mathematics contest. On leaving school he has been selected to attend the country’s Advanced Subsidiary (AS) level centre designed for high academic achievers.
I would like to thank the Trustees, Eswatini Committee, Mbabane City Council, the Salvation Army and the Co-ordinators and cooks at the centres, together with the UK supporters and donors for their ongoing support throughout the year.
