## PARTNERS IN EDUCATION SWAZILAND (CIO) – CHARITY NO 1119173 ## CHAIRMAN’S ANNUAL REPORT 2024 The consequences of global unrest and wars have impacted significantly on the world’s economic stability. This in turn, has produced much increased poverty in Eswatini, especially amongst under-privileged families. Food costs have risen by 30% over the year together with further rises in utility service costs. Currently the country has a world poverty level statistic of circa 60% of its population. There has been greatly increased unemployment and shortages of basic medical supplies in hospitals. All the aforementioned issues have led to a rising number of children being raised by grandparents and guardians. The charity has met these issues head on providing increased finances to meet food costs for the children and ensuring that the support level by the centre co-ordinators and cooks are at a high standard. The centres continue to provide a meal each day, pre-school education and the necessary love and care for the children. Currently 220 children attend the two centres each day. Both centres are developing business projects which assist with the operating costs of the centres. These include bee keeping, clothing manufacture and gardening. The bee keeping project is expanding and now produces purified honey which is sold to local retail outlets. The clothing/sewing group continues to expand and in addition to manufacturing school uniforms are now supplying bedding items to a large local hotel. The charity is currently working with the council to identify larger premises for this project. The gardening project is based around the centres utilising every spare piece of land to produce vegetables for sale or use in the centres. Again we are currently working with the council to identify land for expansion. The charity has established a working partnership with the Mbabane City Council to endeavour to improve the facilities and operational management of the two centres. A good working relationship has been established with the council ensuring medical treatments (vaccinations etc.) are available for the children and necessary maintenance work is undertaken. The charity continues to provide food parcels for needy families and elderly in financial difficulties. Often elderly people in poverty are acting as guardians for the children attending the centres. Trustees continue to raise the necessary finances through fund-raising events and generous donations. In particular thanks are extended to the Christadelphians, Rotary and 1 Soroptimist clubs together with numerous individual donors. The charity is able to provide the necessary level of support and maintain its finances in a healthy position. The sponsorship project continued throughout the year with 30 children receiving sponsorship support. This year we embarked on a new initiative assisting three students who were not academically inclined but practical, to undertake a one year technical course in carpentry and catering. Each student successfully completed the course and has now moved into employment. We are pleased to report that Fizokhule Mdluli, a high school sponsored student passed the schools Junior Certificate examination with an average of 94% pass rate which gave her 5[th] place countrywide. In conclusion, I wish to thank the Trustees, the Swaziland committee and the two centre coordinators and cooks at the centres together with Mbabane City Council for the exceptional support given throughout the year.
