Objectives and Activities

The main purpose of TYC is to provide a safe space for young people aged 10 – 17 to socialise, engage in learning activities and have positive experiences. By doing so TYC hopes to empower its young people to realise their potential and participate in society as responsible citizens who are valued within their community.

To achieve its objectives and purpose TYC complete the following activities:

TYC presently relies almost completely on volunteers. There are 14 registered volunteers. ALL volunteers are required to complete the Safer Recruitment process. Each session requires at least one volunteer to be a qualified First Aider and some volunteers have undertaken this training.

The trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit.

Chair’s Report

TYC has had a good year!

We have continued to grow as a club and the demand for our services resulted in us starting a new third group in March 2023 for ages 10-11. At the same time, we were able to take on a paid sessional youth-work assistant, to help us especially with volunteer shortages for sessions on Saturday afternoons/evenings. The costs of the extra session and a youth work assistant has been met by a generous grant from North Yorkshire Police, Fire and Crime Commission.

We continue to provide a safe space for young people to gather with their friends and make new ones. We provide them with the opportunity to learn new skills in either the kitchen or in crafts. During the year behaviour has become much less challenging and it’s interesting that local police attribute the reduction in anti-social behaviour in Thirsk to TYC. Calmer sessions this year have allowed us to introduce workshops run by outside agencies: (Sexual Health by YorSexual Health; Rapping, Drug Awareness, How much Sugar?! by NYY youth workers).

Volunteers recognise the need for training for themselves and continue to attend courses and online webinars. North Yorkshire Safeguarding Week was particularly helpful, offering training sessions in a variety of topics very relevant to TYC.

We held our first fundraising event at the Sowerby Flatts Festival in July 2022, and this was a good opportunity to raise awareness of the club and attract more members and volunteers.

We have had several excellent trips which have increased the sense of collaborative teamwork and sense of belonging. We participated in both Easter and Summer NorthYorkshireTogether FEAST Holiday Activities programme (which funds activities that include a hot lunch for those on free school meals) and had a great day mountain biking at Sutton Bank bike trail, with a hot potato lunch and an ‘adventure’ walk and picnic afterwards. Great opportunity for young people to experience the National Park on their doorstep and be inspired by the amazing panoramic views.

We’re grateful for the use of Thirsk Community Minibus for all our trips, which have included Go-karting at Stockton, Flamingo Land, and Ninja Warriors, Leeds.

Summary

This past year has shown the continued need for a youth club in Thirsk. TYC now has 60-70 committed young people (aged 10-16) who attend regularly, and we need more sessions and more space to expand our services. We are increasingly aware of the complexities of life for many young people today and are looking at ways in which we can offer appropriate, accessible support and develop TYC to provide this.

During 2023 we have developed our partnering with other organisations, learning from them and improving our network of support for young people.

We are passionate about exploring all opportunities that affirm, encourage and equip young people to make healthy, positive choices; fulfil their potential; feel valued and contribute positively to their community,

Finally, on behalf of the trustees I would like to say a huge thank you to all our wonderful volunteers, donors and supporters. Your commitment and support have been invaluable. Thank you.

Achievements and Performance

During 2023 we have continued to grow as a club, the demand for our services has resulted in us providing an additional session each week for year 5 & 6 aged young people.

We continue to provide a safe space for our young people to gather with their friends and make new ones. We provide them with the opportunity to learn new skills in either the kitchen or in crafts.

By engaging with young people in this way and developing a sense of trust, we can have meaningful conversations with them on issues that are brought to the table – either at their instigation or ours. These may be to do with behaviour, language, substance abuse, diet, aspirations, hopes and fears.

We have had three excellent trips which have increased the sense of collaborative teamwork, sense of belonging, and trust.

We have identified and affirmed individuals who have displayed skills and are excited to see how these develop. We have also seen very significant positive changes in some, who help during sessions and are potential leaders and trustees.
