## **Section C Objectives and activities**

**Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document**

To advance the education of the public and in particular of young people in the region surrounding the Severn Estuary and Bristol Channel by delivering workshops and on-line resources in the subjects of tidal power, the science of tidal power and its impact on the environment and the application of engineering in harnessing tidal energy.

**Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)**

Our Tide has organised and delivered a series of workshops for young people of secondary school age. These workshops took place in autumn 2023, and were themed on tidal energy. There were five individual events, the first four held at Clevedon School and the last at Clevedon Sailing Club, which also made use of outdoor locations at Clevedon Pier and Marine Lake. The workshops were delivered by science and engineering professionals with specifically developed content and materials. The number of students benefitting varied in number, averaging around 8 (this is down on previous years as many students in the local community had already been reached). The students benefitted from participating in the workshops, developing their skills and experience related to tidal energy and the STEM subjects that are important in that context. Participation in these workshops has varied benefits to the students which have importance varying with individual circumstances: development of STEM skills; positive interaction with young science and engineering professionals to develop career path awareness; CV building for future university and job applications; and confidence building by engagement in a new community in a positive and supportive environment.

On 12 January 2023 a public engagement event on the topic of tidal energy was held at Clevedon Pier. Our Tide contributed one of the three expert speakers and organised the contribution of the two other expert speakers from Cardiff University. The event was a success in reaching a large number of members of the public – the meeting room was at capacity – from whom feedback was very positive.

In April 2023, Our Tide began to advocate for consideration of the existing tidal lagoon at Oldbury as a tidal range energy demonstrator site. To support this advocacy, Our Tide developed a web site article - (https://www.ourtide.org/oldbury lagoon/) and have had meetings with both the Nuclear Restoration Services company which operates the site, and the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult. This supports the objective of advocating for tidal energy generation.

In July 2023 Our Tide staff conducted a ‘walk down’ of a prospective site for a tidal stream turbine demonstrator, on Clevedon Pier. This supports the objective of having a tidal energy focal point in the community to aid clean energy engagement and education.

The trustees have had regard to the requirement on public benefit.

You **may choose** to include further statements, where relevant, about:

- policy on grantmaking;

- policy programme related investment;

Our Tide is wholly staffed by volunteers – Trustees, Project Leads, Managers and all other staff make contributions according to their skills, interests and available time. Volunteering at Our Tide is open to all. A particularly important team is the workshop delivery team. Each day the students meet two to three different (usually) young professionals to guide them through the workshop activities. We encourage diversity in our workshop delivery teams so that the students can experience that diversity of personality and background which we believe is helpful in bringing to life STEM careers as genuine prospects – i.e. creating the circumstances where students may identify at some level with a professional scientist or engineer can broaden perspectives on career possibilities.

Our Tide does not makes grants.

- contribution made by volunteers.

## Section D Achievements and performance

**Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**

Key milestones are arranged chronologically as follows:

|---|---|---|
|April 2023||Advocacy for tidal range demonstrator at Oldbury begins, and
article writtenhttps://www.ourtide.org/oldbury-lagoon/|

|Sept-Oct 2023||**Third series of student workshops held**|
|October 2023||Clevedon Community Bookshop Community Grant application
submitted|
|||submitted|
|The most important achievements are the**student workshops**.As well
as benefiting the student participants directly, they also leave us with a
valuable set of resources (lesson plans, videos, presentations,
technology kit, model tidal turbines, floating test rig) which will form the
basis of future student workshops.|||

The _**public outreach event**_ has also been very effective, reaching an estimated 100 people. They have also attracted volunteers and consolidated our network of contacts and supporting organisations – businesses, community organisations, schools and local government. Key amongst our relationships going forward is that with Clevedon Pier.

We end the year with confidence in our ability to continue to deliver student workshops, and with increased ambition to extend our outreach activities to including working tidal turbine demonstrations facilities.

**Section E                    Financial review**

**Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves**

The charity has no policy on reserves since to date commitment to future spending has been effectively zero.

**Details of any funds materially** There are no funds materially in deficit. **in deficit**

## **Further financial review details (Optional information)**

You **may choose** to include additional information, where relevant about:

- the charity’s principal sources of funds (including any fundraising);

- how expenditure has supported the key objectives of the charity;

- investment policy and objectives including any ethical investment policy adopted.

The charity’s only source of funds to date has been from the Clevedon Community Bookshop’s Community Grant scheme in 2022. This has covered a substantial portion of the costs incurred in delivering the workshops. Fundraising activity has been modest to date as the workshop costs are modest, and trustees have been pleased to fund shortfalls. It is noted that some interest-free loans from trustees are in place, and trustees are content that the charity does not guarantee their repayment. As the charity’s ambition increases, the needs for funds increases, and there will be increased fundraising effort going forward.

Our Tide has benefitted significantly from in-kind contribution in the form of free facility access, technology access, and expert time from Nuvola Ltd, coecreative Ltd, Frazer-Nash Consultancy Ltd, Clevedon Sailing Club, Clevedon School, and Clevedon Pier. The total estimated value exceeds £3,000.
