## **Policies**
Our Tide has existing policies as follows: Code of Conduct, Safeguarding, Recruitment, Anti-Bullying, Whistle Blowing and Volunteer Induction.
## **Risks**
The primary risks are associated with safeguarding as holding workshops with young people is the primary activity. It is the responsibility of the Workshop Lead that a Risk Assessment is carried out and approved by a Trustee. The H&S Officer is in a support and advisory role.
## **Organisational Structure**
- The Trustees agree objectives and activities with Project Leads and Managers who are in turn supported by Volunteers. Project Lead and Manager roles vary with requirements. At the time of writing, those in place are as follows:
- Project Leads: Workshops; Model kit; Tidal stream Demonstrator; Tidal range Demonstrator; Materials Consolidation.
- Managers: Secretary; H&S Officer; Volunteers; Communications; Schools Liaison; Fundraising.

**Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document**
To advance the education of the public and in particular of young people in the region surrounding the Severn Estuary and Bristol Channel by delivering workshops and on-line resources in the subjects of tidal power, the science of tidal power and its impact on the environment and the application of engineering in harnessing tidal energy.

**Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)**
Our Tide has organised and delivered two workshops for young people of secondary school age. Each workshop took place over a four day duration, was open to all, and was delivered by experts with specifically developed content and materials. In total 26 students benefitted from participating in the workshops, developing their skills and experience related to tidal energy and the STEM subjects that are important in that context. The workshops were open to all, but to encourage gender diversity and to encourage involvement of students from less advantaged backgrounds, Our Tide worked with the local secondary school (Clevedon School) to encourage particular cohorts to participate. This had good success: notably, in each workshop, female participation was just over 50%. Participation in these workshops has varied benefits to the students which have importance varying with individual circumstances: development of STEM skills; positive interaction with young science and engineering professionals to develop career path awareness; CV building for future university and job applications; and confidence building by engagement in a new community in a positive and supportive environment.
The major element of public benefit was delivered via the workshops as described above. Our Tide also contributed to tidal energy awareness raising – opportunities and challenges - to the general public via speaking events at Clevedon School, Clevedon Pier, and Clevedon Town Council. Also, other opportunities were taken to offer personal development experience for local young people as follows. In developing logos, branding and artwork for Our Tide, A-level Art students at secondary school were coached by a professional graphic design business. Similarly, in developing the website for Our Tide, A-level Computer Science students from secondary school were coached by a professional software business.
The trustees have had regard to the requirement on public benefit.

Our Tide is wholly staffed by volunteers – Trustees, Project Leads, Managers and all other staff make contributions according to their skills, interests and available time. Volunteering at Our Tide is open to all. A particularly important team is the workshop delivery team. Each day the students meet two to three different (usually) young professionals to guide them through the workshop activities. We encourage diversity in our workshop delivery teams so that the students can experience that diversity of personality and background which we believe is helpful in bringing to life STEM careers as genuine prospects – i.e. creating the circumstances where students may identify at some level with a professional scientist or engineer can broaden perspectives on career possibilities.
During 2021 preparation and outreach activity was heavily restricted due to COVID-19 pandemic control measures in place, and likewise the number of students accommodated in the first workshop was also reduced from the ideal level. The achievements of the volunteers in that year are remarkable.

The most important achievements are the **student workshops** . As well as benefiting the 26 student participants directly for four half-day sessions, they also leave us with a valuable set of resources (lesson plans, videos, presentations, technology kit, model tidal turbines, floating test rig) which will form the basis of future student workshops.
The _**public engagement events**_ have also been very effective, reaching an estimated 100 people. They have also attracted volunteers and consolidated our network of contacts and supporting organisations – businesses, community organisations, schools and local government.
Key amongst our relationships going forward is that with Clevedon Pier: we now have a shared aim of installing a demonstrator tidal stream turbine on the pier.
Although we were unsuccessful in our bid for a Community Research Networks grant from the Innovation Funding Service, the bidding activity brought with it significant support from three universities.
We end the year with confidence in our ability to continue to deliver student workshops, and with increased ambition to extend our outreach activities to including working tidal turbine demonstrations facilities.

The charity’s only source of funds to date has been from the Clevedon Community Bookshop’s Community Grant scheme. This has covered a substantial portion of the costs incurred in delivering the workshops. Fundraising activity has been modest to date as the workshop costs are modest, and trustees have been pleased to fund shortfalls. It is noted that some interest-free loans from trustees are in place, and trustees are content that the charity does not guarantee their repayment. As the charity’s ambition increases, the needs for funds increases, and there will be increased fundraising effort going forward.
Our Tide has benefitted significantly from in-kind contribution in the form of free facility access, technology access, and expert time from Nuvola Ltd, coecreative Ltd, Frazer-Nash Consultancy Ltd, Clevedon Sailing Club, Clevedon School, and Clevedon Pier. The total estimated value exceeds £4,000.
