## **Report of the Trustees for the year ended 30 June 2025**

The trustees present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 30 June 2025. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).

## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES**

## **Objectives and aims**

The purpose of the charity as set out in its governing document for the benefit of the public to relieve the suffering and distress of animals in need of care and attention by reason of sickness, neglect, mistreatment, ill usage, and misadventure and in particular to provide and maintain a safe haven (sanctuary) or other facilities for the reception of such animals. For the benefit of the public to educate the public on matters concerning animal welfare.

The main activities of the charity is the rescue of animals in distress by providing respite, care and medical treatment.

All activities undertaken during the year kept in mind the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit and we believe that this has been achieved.

## **ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE**

## **Charitable activities**

The charity continues to house a similar number of sheep and goats but may need to ensure that contributions from those giving the animals are more generous. Rising costs of feed and vet's bills means there is a limited amount of 'free' care that can be offered.

## **Fundraising activities**

This year has been a period of reflection but also growth. Realising that we needed to be seeing higher levels of income into our account we applied to a few grant making trusts. We also established a relationship with a local firm of solicitors who handle legacies and this has proved transformational for the charity.

A local children's nursery at Preston (Songbirds) donated £1000 in return for siting an advertising board in the corner of the grazing field. This is the 2nd year we've had this arrangement.

The Sheep Sanctuary summer fundraiser which usually takes place each summer had to be postponed due to a family bereavement but is scheduled to resume in 2026. We are aware of the importance of raising our profile within the local community.

## **FINANCIAL REVIEW**

## **Financial position**

In October 2024 we received a grant of £5,000 from a grant making trust, ring fenced to pay for food, bedding and vet costs. This has made such a difference to our finances. We've been able to buy in bulk and get better prices.

In June 2025 we received a legacy of £30,000. This has helped us enormously. The funds are to be used to buy a wooden shelter and portaloo to facilitate our pet therapy programme, 2 sheds for storage and some seasonal paid help so that the trustees are not so tied to the needs of animal husbandry .

## **FUTURE PLANS**

We are aware that our annual income had become perilously close to not meeting our expenses. We are now in a much better financial position and going forward will continue to look for grants and gifts rather than courting smaller sums from collection boxes etc.

## **STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT Governing document**

The charity is controlled by its governing document, a deed of trust and constitutes an unincorporated charity.

The charity's constitution was registered as a charity in July 2021. It has a legal status as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). Trustees are appointed and reappointed annually at the Annual General Meeting with a minimum of 3 trustees.

## **Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of The Sheep Sanctuary**

## **Independent examiner's report to the trustees of The Sheep Sanctuary**

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of The Sheep Sanctuary (the Trust) for the year ended 30 June 2025.

## **Responsibilities and basis of report**

As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('the Act').

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust's accounts carried out under Section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under Section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

## **Independent examiner's statement**

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by Section 130 of the Act; or

2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or

3. the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
