Group Scout Council Minutes 12th June 2025 18:30 Venue: Diamond Scout Centre

Welcome

David Bull the Chair introduced themselves and thanked all for attending. Explained how the meeting will be run in two parts, with the formal part first followed by the awards presentation. The Chair hoped that all have read the annual report covering 2024, with lots of information such as the group’s activities over the past year and the group’s accounts.

Apologies for Absence

The Chair noted apologies from Michelle Myers, Gill Fewell, and Stuart Pope.

Governance Topics

The minutes were distributed in the annual report. Approval was proposed by Matt Savill and seconded by Rob Thompson. The Council agreed the previous minutes as an accurate record.

The constitution has been adapted from Policy, Organisation, and Rules (POR) and is available on the Group’s website. The adoption was proposed by Simon Thompson and seconded by Tracy Bennett. The Council agreed to adopt the constitution.

• Note the Group’s Financial Year

The Chair noted that the Group’s financial period was changed a few years ago and that the Group will maintain its current financial period of January to December.

• Approve Appointed and Community Members of The Council. No appointed or community members of the Council were proposed.

The Chair noted that the recommendation from the Scouts is that the board has between 5 and 12 trustees. Previously the group had slightly more than this but have lost some trustees. The Chair therefore suggests that the board has between 5 and 12 members. This was proposed by Mel Russell and seconded by Paul Carruthers. This was agreed by The Council. The quorum was agreed to be set at 1/3 of the board. This was proposed by the Chair and seconded by Charlotte Bennett. This was agreed by The Council.

The Chair noted that the quorum is usually 10%. It was suggested that this is set to 20 given the current number of members of The Council. This was proposed by the Chair and seconded by Rob Thompson. The Council confirmed this number.

Review of the Previous Year

The Chair handed over to Gloria Bailey, the GLV , who introduced themselves noting change in title from Group Scout Leader to Group Lead Volunteer.

Last year has seen a number of big changes from the Scouts and they thanked the leaders for working through these changes.

The AGM report has the best of what the group got up to over last year and the GLV had the pleasure of attending a few of these and present awards. They were pleased to be welcomed by the young people to each of these sessions.

The group’s leadership team is made up of team members and the group is grateful for some new volunteers. The group has also received several grants which helped with financial support and has been used to purchase kit. The GLV stated that parents can continue to support the group by supporting the filling in of paperwork and supporting with fundraising (such as the Co-op chosen charity and Easyfundraising). The GLV concluded with one of Baden Powell’s sayings.

Receive and Consider Annual Report

The GT noted that the accounts are doing well with over £30,000 income from subscription costs, activities etc. Currently the group spends around £7000 with the Scouts to cover the membership costs and contributes towards the district and county. The group has acquired roughly £4500 over the past year in grants which has helped maintain the group. The total income for the past year was approximately £36,000 and the expenditure just under £30,000. This has enabled the group to obtain a small buffer (in line with the practice of a non-profit) but the GT noted that bills are increasing – currently they are mostly paid for by hall hires which is a risk. The accounts have been accepted by the Trustee Board.

Appointments

• Trustees Standing Down

There are a number of trustees standing down and not continuing: Steven Borrett / Rachel Borrett / John Flatt / Tara Scouse.

At this point in the meeting, all trustees now stand out. The GLV is the only trustee with a guaranteed role.

• Appoint Members of the Group Trustee Board

The GLV stated that David is still within his 3-year term and will continue as Chair . The Chair stated that apart from those standing down, all trustees are staying on. These are:

David Bull (appointed as Group Chair) / Gloria Bailey (Group Lead Volunteer - automatically a member as per the constitution) / Naomi Bailey / Matthew Savill / Joanne Soccard / Helen Belcher / Robert Thompson Under 25 Members: Sam Lloyd / Louis Soccard / Simon Thompson / Libby Brown

This was proposed by Tracy Bennett and seconded by Paul Carruthers. The Council voted unanimously in favour.

Recruitment

The Chair shared that the group is in need of a secretary who is not a trustee to allow the board to focus on the items being discussed. The group has not currently been able to recruit anyone. This would be someone to come along to the board meetings every two months (6 per year) and the AGM with the basic need to prepare the meeting minutes. The Chair invited anyone who can support this to come forward after the meeting.

The group is also looking for a Treasurer as Naomi, who has held the position for several years and got the accounts into a good shape, is a uniformed leader which presents a challenge for managing both roles. The board are looking for someone to help and be onboarded by Naomi.

There is also a need for a number of volunteers for different sections across the group. The Chair stated that anyone interested in supporting should give it a go and speak with one of the leaders or Gloria.

Finally, the group is actively looking for a cleaner. Gloria, Brian and Kat Dix have been cleaning the hall but can no longer continue to do so. The board has been investigating hiring a cleaner, but this is at great expense. The group is looking for support with cleaning with whatever time you can spare. Please speak to a volunteer and inform them of any help that can be provided or for any recommendations of local cleaners.

Appoint Scrutineer

The Scrutineer ensures that the Group is managing its accounts properly and that they are an accurate record. The GT proposed that Wendy Toogood-Wolvey be reappointed as the scrutineer as she has previously scrutinised the accounts and was previously a treasurer of the group. This was seconded by the Chair and unanimously agreed by the Council.

Proposal to Increase Subscriptions

This is not a proposal made lightly, and the board have considered this over the past year. The Chair noted that the fees have not increased for roughly 7 years, and the board have tried to keep costs down. Currently, the cleaning and maintenance of the hall is completed by volunteers in an effort to keep the cost downs. The Chair thanked Matt, Charlie, Sam, and all who support this effort for their time. However, the board has concluded that it is no longer sustainable to maintain the subs at £10/month and that the board are proposing an increase to £12/month. This will help give the group a cushion going forward. It is currently struggling to maintain hall hirers and the Chair noted that the hall is open to hire and that this directly supports the group financially. This was proposed and seconded by the Trustee Board. The Council agreed unanimously to this increase, starting in September.

Guest Speaker – Ian Edwards (District Lead Volunteer)

Ian thanked Gloria and the team in Tadley for their support in delivering the experiences for the young people in the group. Ian noted that the discussion about finances is happening throughout the district and that subscriptions are increasing. He stated that if anyone can give some of their time, however small, please do. Whether that is as a trustee, supporting with the cleaning, or as a leader - your time would be greatly appreciated.

The following awards were presented:

o This was for the work she did on the World Scout Jamboree in South Korea last year, supporting roughly 40 young people and adults during the difficulties of the event.

Closing Remarks

The Chair asked The Council for any other business. There was no other business.

Next AGM Date

The Chair thanked all those for attending and proposed Wednesday 10th June 2026 for the next Annual General Meeting.

Another year has gone but what a year of activity and change. For the leaders the year started with a new IT system from HQ which has taken us some time to become familiar with, so thank you to the leaders for persevering with the changes.

The scouting year started with a Squirrel group being set up so thank you to Fiona and her team, you would be amazed at what this age group can do given the opportunity, and the fun they have is so infectious, a sample of their activities are, fire building and lighting, visit to fire station, bug activities, building bridges from paper, experiments, lots of challenging games, first aid, crafts, puppet show of bats, story time, litter picking and a walk to see the Christmas tree.

Our Beaver sections have expanded to almost bursting point, I have visited them on occasions and the activities they are doing just makes you want to join in, planting bulbs, visiting the Apple Store and the local food pantry, a visit to Ewhurst Park to see the Beavers, 4 Kingdoms day out, Katakanuing, grass sledging, fire station visit, fire lighting, cooking, challenging games and more, so thank you to the Beaver leaders and helpers for providing these opportunities.

Cubs again have been doing some very unusual things, hockey, kayaking, bowls, street dancing, and a visit to RAF Odiham but to mention a few, who would not want to join in, this is as well as

camping, BEASTLY, fright night, climbing, hikes, navigating and map reading, and the list goes on, so again I thank the Cub leaders and helpers for all their work in providing these activities.

Scouts have been doing what scouts like to do, everything involved in preparing to camp, using knives and axes, geocaching, Holi scavenger hunt with lots of colour, circus skills, fishing, printing a T towel for camp, JOTA (Jamboree on the airwaves) using radios to communicate with others, this does not cover things like being in the forrest, camping, cooking, BEASTLY, shooting, pumpkin carving, parliament week, visit to RAF Odiham, expedition camp and the list goes on.

My last thank you is to the trustees for their work and dedication in keeping this building safe and secure along with updating our facilities, the helpers who carry out our maintenance jobs ensuring the building and grounds are safe.

So how about joining the leadership teams and having fun

with the young people, it’s amazing what you learn and the places you get to visit, you don’t have to attend every week and training is provided, you could become a trustee and help us keep this group going in the right direction for the future.

The 2025 AGM was very well attended as we combined the formal meeting with a presentations evening for the children and leaders. This was very well received and will be considered again for future meetings.

Unfortunately, we lost a number of trustees during the year and have been unable to recruit any replacements to join the board to date. We are always looking for new trustees to help ensure that Tadley Scout Group is governed to the highest standards. Please consider becoming a trustee, no experience is necessary. We meet 7 times a year with most of the work being done outside the meetings. There have been many challenges throughout the year along with a number of successes. The main challenges have revolved around the hall heating system and changing health and safety legislation which is often hard to keep abreast of. The heating system is reaching the end of its life and has caused issues for the last couple of years, always failing at the coldest time of year! We were very fortunate to get a grant off the Peoples Postcode Lottery than enabled us to replace many internal components in the hall. We now need to seek funding to replace the external air source heat pump.

In addition, changes to health and safety legislation will require a number of costly changes within the DSC that will be enacted in early 2026.

Also, in order to balance the books, it was necessary to increase the monthly subscriptions from September 2025. This was the first increase for about 5 years and was necessary to offset the general increases in running the DSC and providing new equipment and activities for the children.

On a more positive note, the introduction of a Squirrel Drey has been a great success and thanks go to the new leaders that have enabled this new group to get up and running. At the end of 2025 most of the scout groups were full with a healthy waiting list going into 2026.

The front doors have been replaced and a number of other improvements have been made both inside and outside the DSC including the painting of the halls to keep them bright and fresh and new car park lighting.

The Trustee board would particularly like to thank Matt Savill, Charlie Dix, Brian Bailey and Gloria Bailey for the unseen hours they spend doing maintenance and cleaning to reduce costs and provide a clean and pleasant environment for the young people to learn and prosper.

Our priorities for 2026 will be controlling our ongoing costs, fundraising for a new heating system, full compliance with changes to health and safety legislation and improving our energy efficiency with ideas to increase the number of solar panels and installation of a solar battery.

The success of Tadley Scout Group relies on many individuals who give up their time and use their skills and knowledge for the benefit of our young people. If you would like to get involved in any way, please contact Gloria Bailey or David Bull.

Squirrel Drey

This year has been our first as a drey, after some trial sessions in February supported by other section leaders, our GLV Gloria and Lucinda Seward from the county team. We have also participated in National level online support for new dreys which has proved helpful.

We have a full drey and have successfully transferred 5 Squirrels to our Beaver colonies. Our waiting list is long, and we continue to look for another volunteer team member to raise our capacity to 16 Squirrels. We are also looking to recruit a Young Leader, please do get in contact if you could help with either role.

Spring term was based around a set of start up sessions provided by National HQ and we invested our first cohort of Squirrels and leaders on 27th March. We started several Activity Badges and completed Let’s get creative as our first badge. We made Mother’s Day gifts and took part in an Easter Egg hunt. Three leaders also attended basic first aid training allowing us to run the sessions with no further help.

Summer term was all about finding our feet and trying to be active outside as much as possible. We completed Activity Badges; Let’s get growing by planting and looking after bean seeds, Brilliant Builders by creating dens for ourselves and other creatures, Local Heros saw the local PCSO’s come for a session, us visiting Tadley Fire Station and litter picking at Southdown Park. We had our first real campfire and went hiking in Pamber Forest looking and finding a great many bugs for our Bugs of the World blanket badge. During the term I attended Beastly 2025 with the Beavers with a view to our drey attending in 2026. We finished the term with a mini fete party of fun games and outdoor activities.

Autumn term saw us attend Squirrel Funday at Ferny Crofts, where the Squirrels took part in crate stacking, archery, climbing, caving, back woods cooking, tomahawks, crafts and many goes on the numerous bouncy castles despite the rain.

We continued to build on our Activity Badges with Exciting Experiments where we had fizzing fruits and What’s in the box sensory experience. Let’s Celebrate was finished off by learning about Diwali, tasting Indian foods and crating diya from clay and glow light lanterns to conga round an indoor “campfire” with. Explore outdoors saw us take advantage of the dark evenings with an outdoor safari looking for escaped animals with our torches (a Rhino is still missing so do be careful outside of the hall) .

We completed work on Challenge badges in All About Adventure, All About Me and All Together as we focus on our young people achieving the Chief Scout Acorn award before they move to Beavers after Easter 2026.

A special thank you to all the leaders and helpers that have come along when we needed an extra hand for the ratios and starting up, Jo Soccard, Sheila and Roy Cherrett, Mel Russell, Helen Belcher, Tracy Bennett and to all the Tadley team who have guided us through the process of setting up and running the drey successfully.

Lastly, I would like to thank all the parents for trusting us with your young people and to the Squirrels that have joined us in making our sessions on Thursdays the best hour of the week. Really looking forward to our adventures in 2026

Willow Beaver Colony

This year our numbers bounced back to us having a full colony again. We also welcomed a new leader; Flipper , who has settled in well and become an invaluable member of our team.

As always though, we are on the look-out for new leaders, so if anyone is interested in joining us (even for the odd session if we are one down or we need higher ratio numbers, when outside, for example ), please let us know.

Again, this year we have seen several Beavers achieve their Chief Scout Bronze Awards with everyone else working very hard towards completing theirs.

During the spring term, we enjoyed a variety of activities. We learnt all about personal and home safety and made some lovely craft items for Valentine’s day. We visited the Apple Store in Basingstoke to make some fun emojis and had a trip to the food pantry in Tadley to learn all about their important charity work. Our Young Leaders then taught the Beavers how to prepare for a hike and to pack their rucksacks properly before the YLs planned and taught all the parts of the Navigator 1 badge. We also planted some bulbs in pots as mother’s day gifts and finished the term with an easter egg hunt and chocolate tasting.

In the summer term, we learnt about St George and then enjoyed a trip to 4 Kingdoms where we met some rather large dinosaurs! We also visited Ewhurst Park to learn about bugs and beavers (but unfortunately did not get a glimpse of the real ones as they were too shy!) . The Beavers took photographs around Silchester Roman Wall, had a great dance session with Lily.

Attended the big district event “Beastly” made bug hotels , did a litter pick, went grass sledging, had a water fight, went katakanuing on the Thames and visited Theale Fire Station. The term ended with our annual camp, which this time was at Ferny Crofts in the New Forest, where we camped out for 2 nights, climbed their climbing wall, did crate stacking, played aeroball, played crazy golf and sang songs round the campfire (of, course!).

In the autumn term, we learnt to pitch tents at the DSC, held another successful Macmillan coffee evening, learnt about other countries for our international badge, visited St Mary’s Church, played some halloween themed games, learnt to strike a match and light a fire safely (and put it out – after we cooked and ate our smores), did some cool science experiments, made and ate shortbread before walking round Tadley to see the Christmas lights and then making our own Christmas decorations.

My thanks go to the Willow Leaders for supporting our Young People this year. A very special thank you goes to our amazing Young Leaders (Kingfisher and Ladybird - Rueben and Jess. They have been working hard towards (and achieving) their Young Leader Awards and Duke of Edinburgh Awards. They have tirelessly and selflessly helped both the Beavers and leaders every single week and at weekends with endless enthusiasm and patience. We could not deliver our full programme without you both! We now look forward to more adventures in 2026.

Oak Beaver Colony

2025 was another active year for Tadley Beavers and we packed in many activities.

The first part of the year we kept busy with a lot of indoor activities the winter months are always difficult as theres no place better than outside to keep the Beavers active and engaged.

We started off with the Communicator badge learning about forms of communication, we had activities where the Beavers had to decipher morse code and semaphore flags, and then email and text the leaders with the answer, they also worked with some walkie talkies and had to direct their team to different places in the hall.

We moved on to Cooking, Safety and the Disability badge, and they loved being blindfolded and then working there way around the hall with their white canes being careful not to bump into each other, this and the other disabilities we learnt about gave them a good understanding of how different people live and manage. We finished off the term with a visit to the Apple store learning our computer skills, planting some flowers for mother day, and the Beavers learnt new skills packing their sleeping bags away, rolling their Neckers and lighting a candle and how to do it safely.

In the summer term, we learnt about St George and then enjoyed a trip to 4 Kingdoms where we met some rather large dinosaurs! We also visited Ewhurst Park to learn about bugs and beavers (but

unfortunately did not get a glimpse of the real ones as they were too shy!). The term ended with our Summer camp which was held at Ferny crofts, this is always a challenge for some of our Beavers who may of not stayed away from their parents before. They all had a great time on the Climbing wall, crate stacking, Aeroball and crazy golf and as always had a great sing song around the camp fire where we finished off the day with smores

The Autumn term started off learning how to pitch a tent, making a Den in Pamber forest and hosting our annual McMillan Coffee evening with is a fantastic charity and we raised nearly £250

In October we had our annual visit with the county Beavers to Paultons Park which is always a great day trying all the new rides and the Beavers loved the new Ghostly manor where they had to shoot all of the ghosts.

We visited St Marys Church as part of our faith badges had some Halloween games, cooked some shortbread and did experiments and the Beavers loved the Mentos and Coke trick.

The Year finished with the visit to the Christchurch Players Panto, watching a Christmas Carol, and the beavers had great fun spotting Spider, Woodpecker and Dragon Fly, who all had parts, the Panto finished with a snow ball fight where there beavers got quite enthusiastic throwing them back at the cast, we even managed a half decent nights sleep when we returned to the Scout hall which is certainly a rarity.

Most of our programme is shared with Willow Beavers and with out the dreat leaders across both colonies Beavers would not be the success it is.

Hurricane Cub Pack

Tadley Hurricanes continues under the leadership of Helen (Akela), Debbie (Raksha), and Stuart (Baloo). Nick (Kaa) has found it difficult to join us every week alongside his work and other scouting commitments. He joins us when he can. We have been pleased to be joined by John (Rama), who comes when his work commitments allow and our young leader, Ash.

Thank you for all your support during the year. If you would like to join the team as a volunteer, we would love to welcome you.

The membership of Hurricane Cubs has been settled at around 20 members, but we can always find room for a few more!

Spring 2025

We started the year with a pack forum. Hurricanes have always chosen their programme based on the cubs’ choices.

We took part in the Big Garden Watch and made feeders for our feathered friends. Then we were able to experiment using dry ice and made some ice cream! We held auditions for Cubs Got Talent and those who wanted to perform for the rest of the pack. We were treated to singing and joke telling. Well done to those who took part. You were so brave. A few of us attended a very wet and muddy night hike run by Basingstoke West District. We increased the number of skills we have by learning to lay the table and make biscuits. We were lucky to have a visit to RAF Odiham and got to find out more about air traffic control, rescue, map reading before trying out the seats in the back of a Chinook. They were not first-class standard! To celebrate the start of Lent we made pancakes and enjoyed making our own toppings. The cubs found out more about Ireland’s patron saint and made soda bread.

The term ended with an Easter egg hunt.

Summer 2025

The term started with another pack forum, so we cold continue our youth led programme, alongside guidance from the leaders. Among the skills learned in this term were how to play hockey (many thanks to Basingstoke Hockey Club for running this session for us every year, safe and responsible fire lighting, making bee hotels and camp preparation. We joined in with the commemoration of the end of the Second World War in Europe in May with a parade on the Green. We joined with Basingstoke East District for their fun day at Dummer farm where the cubs could try out many adventurous activities. We had a go at paddleboarding at the AS Centre in Theale and even the most cautious cubs had a go. Well done to you all. We finished the term with taskmaster style challenges in Pamber Forest.

Autumn 2025

Before the term started in earnest we joined in the end of World War 2 commemorations 80 years after the war ended in Japan and the Far East. The cubs were then welcomed back in September with games and a pack forum.

Burghfield Bowls Club hosted a taster session for playing lawn bowls. Thank you to the club for giving up an evening to help guide the cubs in good technique. We worked on team building skills, and the cubs were supportive of each other and completed the team challenges well. We made poppies for a display akin to that at The Tower of London.

We joined in with the County at their fight night event at Ferney Crofts. It was very scary! Just before half term we tried out crazy golf with a castles theme at Basingstoke Golf centre. Despite the drizzle we had great fun trying to beat each others score. As is tradition we attended the RBL’s festival of Remembrance and I was so proud of all those that attended. They looked smart and behaved responsibly throughout. We also held a street party and ran a series of events as part of a ‘I’m a Cub Scout – Get me Out of Here which coincided with the start of the popular TV series. They cubs worked well at solving the challenges. As December came around, we started to prepare for Christmas and walked to see the Tadley tree. We sang some carols around it before returning to eat some chips. Kindly delivered by Mrs Rama! We finished the year with our fast becoming an annual tradition, family friendly Christmas quiz, inviting the cub’s families to join us for a mince pie or two!

Spitfire Cub Pack

Tadley Spitfire Cubs continues to be led by Gill (Akela), assisted by Joanne (Bagheera) and Paul (Bandar-log). We have had another busy year with many varied activities and exciting adventures, new experiences, and badges earnt including four Chief Scout’s Silver awards.

During the Spring term Cubs did some Lego modelling, learnt about healthy eating, did some cooking to celebrate Chinese New Year, all towards sections of various badges. We had a great outing together with Hurricane Cubs, to an excellent performance of the pantomime “Puss in Boots” performed by Silchester Players. Over two weeks Cubs did activities towards their Personal Safety badge, which included an interesting visit and talk from the local PCSO and his colleague, who showed the Cubs their uniforms and equipment, and also their police car. We spent a further two weeks doing the Gardening badge, presented by Emily. The Cubs learnt about gardening tools and safety, growing conditions, different types of plants, and potted broad bean plants to take home to grow on. Several Cubs successfully grew their plants to maturity and were able to harvest and eat their beans. Some Cubs joined other Cubs from around the District and took part in the annual BWDC swim badge test day and successfully gained some staged swimmer badges. Cubs had an exciting trip to Clip n Climb, where they spent an evening scaling the various towers and obstacles, and constantly thriving to reach higher and be faster! The term finished with an Easter craft making baskets to fill with chocolate eggs found during an Easter egg hunt around the DSC.

The summer term began with activities towards the Navigator stage 2 badge, including learning compass points, grid references, map keys, then a walk to both draw a map, and follow a map, and finally followed an orienteering course on Tadley Common. In mid-May Cubs attended Beastly25, a brilliant bi-District activity day. The Cubs had a great time doing a wide variety of activities including climbing, shooting and crafts.

Next Cubs attended the annual hockey taster session, an exciting District event run by Basingstoke Hockey Club, always an enjoyable evening. After half term was an evening learning how to pitch and strike tents, and then came the annual summer Cub camp, held at Pinsent campsite, near Winchester, where the Cubs slept in tents and took part in many activities, a wide game, campfire and songs. Next Cubs learnt about fire safety, laid and lit fires, and cooked tea of beans on toast. Cubs had an excellent evening learning and playing lawn bowls at AWE Rec Soc. This was a very hot evening and greatly enjoyed by the Cubs who showed quite some skill. The term ended in Odiham with a very exciting kayaking evening run by Basingstoke Canoe Club. The Cubs quickly mastered their kayaks and paddled some way down the canal, where they played some water games, before paddling back to the start.

The autumn term started by looking at services in our local community and creating a map to show their locations within Tadley. Then the Cubs had an energetic evening of street dance, did some problem solving, and learnt some domestic skills. Cubs spent two evenings learning about Diwali, including celebrating light, making, Rangoli patterns, then cooking Indian food, and for many tasting some new flavours. Some of the Cubs visited Ferny Crofts for the Fright Night activity day and evening, where they did adventurous activities, handled snakes and followed a spooky trail. Cubs had an exciting evening air rifle shooting at Chineham Scout HQ, preceded by learning about air rifle safety. They all enjoyed trying to improve their accuracy. Cubs did a disgusting and very messy experiment pushing mushed up food through an imitation stomach and intestines and learnt about the human digestive system. We had a craft evening run by Oakley Stitchers decorating candles, for Christmas gifts. We joined with Baughurst Cubs for a walk to look at the Christmas lights, from Tadley library to their Scout HQ, where all the Cubs enjoyed eating chips and cakes together. The term concluded with an evening playing board games and eating snacks.

Darwin Scout Troop

2025 has been another busy year for the Scouts, we have been focusing on some of the more challenging elements of the Scouts Challenge Awards giving those older scouts the best possible chance of achieving their Chief Scout Gold Award.

We worked on elements like - learning about International scouting and taking part in JOTA (Jamboree on the airwaves) where scouts got to speak to other people and scouts from around the country & world on amateur radio. Scouts honed thier dexterity with some figurine model making (courtesy of Warhammer), leaders often needed glasses to see the small parts! Their ballance and agility was tested with circus skills and slacklining, while their speed and just generally having fun was tested with a Holi scavenger hunt and colour run.

We took the scouts away from the hall and usual areas for a session at the climbing wall - we soon found out which scouts can climb the fastest! We also took them to another scout hall for an Air rifles shooting session, they even performed better than a recent visit from the Explorer scouts with more bulseye’s and higher target scores. We were also lucky to organise a visit to RAF Odiham where the scouts got to see lots of different equipment as well as sit in a Chinook helicopter.

We had lots of fun despite the rain on camp at Ferny Croft’s, the scouts got to challenge themselves on the Gladiator Challenge activity as well as put their pioneering skills to the challenge and build a large structure they could climb on. We also ran an Expedition camp for the older scouts specifically for them to achieve their challenge badge, there were a few tired scouts and sore feet by the end of the weekend, but they achieved 2 day hikes in an area they don’t know & collecting rubbish along the way - well done.

Im told BEASTLT 25 was a blast and great fun, I wouldn’t know as I was stuck in one of the activity zones on bases or generally running kit back & forth, so didn’t get to see everything the scouts got up to.

We quenched the scouts hunger & thirst with a few cooking & baking sessions, learning how to cook on trangias and kelly kettles! & how differnet fuels affect the cooking.

All the meals they cooked went down well especially the christmas biscuits (not sure they actually made it home as christmas presents).

We got the scouts to work on starting to get their camp kit personalised and set up as a kit ready to pick up & go. they had fun personalising t-towels with their own potato print designs before sewing a crockery kit bag and personalising it with a fun camp blanket style badge.

We got out and about as much as possible during the year with local hikes, wide games, a campfire, an easter hunt in the woods and a visit to Ron Wards meadow to work on our naturalist badge. We also finished off the summer term with a fishing session thanks to Staceys and their fishing pond. Everyone had fun despite the wriggly fish!

We challenged the scouts in the winter with a Minute to win it evening, they all did realy well at all the challenges. We also took part in UK Parliament week and used it as an opportunity to hold a troop forum in a different way, voting on their prefered activities for next year (if possible)

There were a lot of extra remembrance services this year and I would like to thank the scouts for attending these extra services, it was realy nice to see the support from the whole group for these parades.

Newton Scout Troop

Another year has passed for the scouts, and what a busy year it has been. The year started with a troop forum - ideas for what they wanted to do in the programme, we started the air activities badge and celebrated the Chinese new year by cooking, the scouts designed vehicles to take part in drainpipe racing and after being stuck inside for the start of the year we then played wide games at silchester common. March saw the troop make pancakes for lent which was enjoyed by all (the Nutella did go down), then we had a PL and APL night where they were tasked with running the night and ran a problem solving night. We also practiced our knots and shelter building along with wide games, the troop enjoyed a fire lighting and smores evening, we then ran a St George themed night where we looked into the history and story of the day. We then put the practiced knots and shelter building into practice and built shelters in pamber forest.

May, we celebrated VE day and the end of WW2 with a street party style night with period sandwiches and making bunting, we worked on the world badge discussing gender in sports and everyday life, which was educational. We then went bridge building at pamber forest, we practiced our pioneering skills as well as survival skills, outdoor games and knife, axe & saw work. Camp prep was also carried out through July with tent pitching, more axe, knives & saw work then the customary end of term summer party.

Summer camp, this year we went to perch pool in Dorset, a great week was had by all, we visited the home of scouting, Brownsea Island where the scouts re-made their promise like the original scouts in 1907. The scouts did lots of open fire cooking as well as a hike, we also went to butchers coppice where the scouts enjoyed climbing, shooting and Jacobs ladder.

At the start of the new term in September we performed another troop forum as well as games, we then played wide games at pamber forest, knife, axe & saw work as well as another fire lighting evening, the scouts did more cooking as well as a Young Leader night, more wide games which are the scouts favourites and then rounded the month off with guy making in preparation for bonfire night. November saw the remembrance parade at Tadley church, we burnt the guys they made on 5th of November, we had a PL evening where the PLs came up with a geocaching evening and then pioneering which was learning knots for the following week, and in the last session of the month we made picture frames displaying the knots they made and planning cooking for the following week, they cooked the planned food from the previous week, a Christmas walk which included a chippy run and a Christmas party at the end of the term.

This year saw Owen Cooper achieve his gold award and then join us in becoming a young leader.

I would like to thank Stuart Pope, Chrisy Young, Simon Thompson, Libby Brown, Marina Hamad (YL) and Owen Cooper (YL) for their assistance and help running Newton scouts. Also thank you to the scouts for a good year in scouting.

Looking forward into 2026

We have a few members who have secured places on a variety of International trips for 2027.

We have a Scout and Young Leader who will be taking part in Project 27 which is the alternative International trip that Hampshire Scouts organise & run for those who applied for the World Scout Jamboree and either were not successfull in being offered one of the limited places, or decided that they would prefer the Project 27 trip instead of the Jamboree.

We also have 2 Scouts and a Young Leader who will be going on the Suisse Adventure to Kandersteg, the permanent mini-Jamboree.

The Project 27 trip will see Scouts and Explorers from Hampshire travel to America where they will embark on a road trip from Atlanta to Boston, they will be stopping off at 4 scout campsites during their journey where they will get to camp / try activities and generally make friends with other scouts from different countries / places.

The Kandresteg trip will see Scouts and Explorers from Hampshire travel to the Swiss based International Scout Centre where they will enjoy 2 weeks of all the fun and thrills of multiple activities on offer including swimming in mountain lakes, white water rafting and a day trip to Bern (the de facto capital of Switzerland)

Part of the lead up to this International trip is that the young people need to work on fundraising activities / events to raise the money for their trips which is costing them -

P27 = between £3,600.00 & £3,900.00 for the 3 week trip. Kandersteg = £1,400.00 (additional activities offered at an extra cost)

As a group we will be looking to support them with their fundraising by helping them to host events.
