## **Aims**

The Daniel Phelan Trust was set up in memory of Daniel Phelan. Specifically, to promote good journalistic practice and to create pathways to encourage young people to consider a career in journalism.

## **Public benefit**

The trust is mindful of the lack of diversity in the journalistic profession – currently 86% of professional journalists come from white ethnic groups. We are also mindful of the importance of speaking truth to power in any healthy democracy. We aim to encourage young people from unrepresented communities to find a voice and to consider a career in journalism.

## **Meetings**

Board meetings were held on 7.3.23 and 1.8.23

A discussion meeting was held with members of the Civil Society Media team on 26.7.23 to review the proposed internship programme.

## **Activities**

**Writing competition –** this project was undertaken as planned with all entries received by January 31[st] 2023 and the judging process completed prior to the Easter period.

Prizes were awarded as follows:

First prize year 8-10 Chloe Veylon, Alleyn’s School (£500)

First Prize year 11-12 Zakir Kabir, Dulwich College (£500)

Runner up Nzilani Hayes, Elmgreen School (£250)

The winning pupils were awarded with a John Lewis voucher and a framed certificate. Each school was match funded in respect of the individual prize won.

Learning and development – despite repeated attempts via email and ‘phone to encourage a wide variety of schools to enter the competition, take up in the state school sector was poor. Whilst efforts to improve our communications and understanding of educational processes must be undertaken, it was felt that the overwhelming factor in the low take up was the crisis situation in the state sector at the current time. Staff shortages and pressures in every dimension following Covid have surely been a factor. It is also nigh on impossible to introduce extracurricular items to an already stressed timetable given the pressure of Ofsted inspections etc.

Going forward, we are intending to continue the competition in partnership with charities and organisations who have a direct connection with the required constituency of applicants as opposed to an open entry model.

It was also thought that the designing of a teaching module to introduce some of the key principles of journalism would be helpful.

## **Internship programme**

Much work has been undertaken to design a short but effective introduction to content making in the publishing sector. The programme will be undertaken at Civil Society Media in Clapham, South London and will comprise of a 5-week involvement of paid work - 2 days per week. Each intern will undertake a series of tasks in each content making department including: news, event programming and marketing. It is thought that employing two interns simultaneously would be beneficial all round.

## **Partnerships**

In line with thinking around the writing competition entry process, we are intending to pilot the internship scheme through another suitable organisation. We are currently in talks with **Journo Recourses** with this in mind.

## **Website update**

All activities have been updated on our website.

## **Sponsorship**

The trust has provided a premium sponsorship for membership of Journo Recourses for one year costing £600.00
