Charitable Objects The Dr. Rachelle Bascara Foundation (the “Charity”) is established for exclusively charitable purposes for the public benefit, worldwide, including in particular (but not limited to): - (a) the advancement, promotion, and support of social sciences and philosophy, global development, equality, and humanities recognised as charitable under the law of England and Wales, particularly but not exclusively by: - (i) undertaking and/or facilitating relevant research and disseminating the useful results of that research for the public benefit and - (ii) providing grants, fellowships, and other financial assistance to qualified individuals and organizations; - (b) such other related charitable purposes for the public benefit as the trustees may from time to time determine. - C. Public Benefit The Charity aims to promote, sustain, and increase individual and collective knowledge of the social sciences and philosophy, global development, equality, and humanities. It is our belief that knowledge in these areas in itself provides a public benefit by satisfying the human need to understand the world and ourselves. Through guidance and expertise as well as grants and other forms of funding, we provide a platform to pursue these goals, including by enabling suppressed voices and marginalized perspectives to be heard. The Charity recognizes that quality research depends on, among other factors, robust and adequate funding. Research Activities The Charity is actively engaging in work to provide a deeper understanding of issues related to political and moral philosophy. One of the projects of the Charity involves a clear conceptual backing of oppression to contemporary emancipatory movements, cutting through the rhetoric and exposing the underlying reality of the oppressed. In February 2022, we have offered a grant (“Grant”) for a period of 6 months to two research fellows to build on the academic work of Dr. Rachelle Bascara. In particular, the paper “Towards a Unified Theory of Oppression” on oppression served as a basis to complete at least two academic working papers on the topic directed at publication in an internationally recognized, peer-reviewed journal in philosophy or a related field. The Grant’s aim was to further clarify, by analysis, the meaning of statements and concepts, providing for quality and rigor in arguments. The first research fellow was a PhD candidate at the Doctoral School of Political Science, Public Policy, and International Relations, Central European University, Vienna (“Researcher 1"). The focus of the work of Researcher 1 is on the inter-generational transformation of the colonized body, with a passion for probing the roots of social, political, and economic inequalities. As work for the Charity, the first paper of Researcher 1 investigated the concept of normalization of oppression. Researcher 1 looked into the desire of human beings to find some form of normalcy in certain situations that force them to adopt routines that may transform the abnormal into the normal. Moreover, Researcher 1 examined the difference between normalization and internalized oppression. For the second paper, Researcher 1 dealt with different kinds of privileges associated with groups of people in terms of oppression; there are groups of people who can be regarded as ontologically privileged and then there are people who have the epistemic privilege. Researcher 1 argued that the ontological and epistemological privileges overlap with each other at certain junctures and are not always mutually exclusive within oppressive settings. In other words, within the oppressed groups, there is often a standpoint of epistemic privilege rooted in the everyday experiences of the oppressed. While ontological privilege is often associated with the oppressors who have the means, resources, and entitlement to arbitrarily interfere and harm other groups, within the oppressed groups there can exist some form of ontological privilege. Our second research fellow earned his PhD in Political Theory at the Central European University in Vienna (“Researcher 2”). The doctoral research of Researcher 2, “Liberalism and Exploitation”, articulates three axes, a critique of the dominant concept of exploitation as price disequilibrium; an address of the analytic Marxist critique of capitalism; and a redefinition of liberal anticapitalism through the concept of exploitation. The main approach of Researcher 2 is analytic philosophy. For the first paper, Researcher 2 explored the duties of the oppressors when facing oppression and injustice given coordination problems and epistemic limitations. For the second paper, Researcher 2 investigated the concept of structural injustice. Researcher 2 argued that structural injustice may give some results in understanding what oppression is, however, the concept is ill-suited in various economic cases because it is built on the misguided assumption that poverty is evidence for injustice or oppression. © 2023 Dr. Rachelle Bascara Foundation. Supporting Initiatives The Charity has embarked on the creation of a biographical literature on the life and work of Dr. Rachelle Bascara aimed at encouraging the younger generations to develop an interest in socially significant topics such as social sciences and philosophy, global development, equality, and humanities. Overview The Charity received financing through donations. During the financial period three donations were received totaling GBP 20,000.00. The donations were sourced from Dr. Konstantin Rozanov as well as ACED Global Solutions Ltd in accordance with the Charity’s rules and procedures for accepting donations. The Charity used its capital conduct academic research, fund supporting projects, and acquire and protect intellectual property.
