DESTA ETHIOPIA
Trustees Report for the year ending 31[st] March 2021
Desta Ethiopia was constituted under a trust deed dated 5[th] April 2021.
The trustees are:
S J Rickerby, Chair L Shekede K L Gray J M Wilson
The charity's principal office is 12 New Street, Ross on Wye, HR9 7A, and its Charity Number is 1194896.
This is Desta Ethiopia’s first report since it became a registered charity on 22 June 2021. This has been a period of unprecedented need owing to armed conflict in many parts of Ethiopia, and in particular the regions of Afar, Tigray and Amhara, to which the majority of our funds are being sent. Operationally, it has been a very challenging time, particularly with regard to getting funds into Tigray: the almost complete blockade of the region by the federal government (air and road transport, internet and telephone network, banking system etc.) has only been lifted in the last few weeks. Despite these immense logistical difficulties, with the help of international intermediaries and our network of colleagues on the ground, we have been able to provide a steady stream of aid to some of the worstaffected areas.
In accordance with the aims of the charity as stated in our registration document we have provided assistance to:
-
people (mainly children and old people) in remote rural areas who have suffered from the seizure or destruction of crops and cattle
-
internally displaced persons who have fled from war zones and had no means of subsistence, including unaccompanied minors
-
vulnerable women, some with children, who have suffered sexual violence, many of whom are also suffering long-term physical and psychological challenges
-
teachers and hospital workers who have not been paid since the outbreak of conflict and have no other means of subsistence
We have come to realise the real benefits in being a small and flexible organisation, as this has enabled us to identify and quickly address changing needs which larger aid agencies are too large and cumbersome to deal with. We have also been able to continue to provide funding and basic supplies to people in conflict zones when many larger organisations were unable to do so. We have even assisted another charity – ‘Ethiopia: Operation Rescue’ which supports children in the Adigrat area – to get funds through to the children in their care. Our small and dedicated team
of Ethiopian friends and colleagues have worked very effectively in collaboration with municipal authorities and local organisations to provide targeted assistance to many desperate people whose needs have not otherwise been recognised.
Desta Ethiopia intends to contribute to reconstruction efforts into the future. For example, within Tigray no schooling has been possible for more than two years, but now that the situation is (at least temporarily) stable, education will be a major focus.

Section A Independent Examiner’s Report Report to the trustees/ DESTA ETHIOPIA members of On accounts for the 31[st] MARCH 2022 Charity no 1194896 year ended 1 & 2 Set out on pages (remember to include the page numbers of additional sheets) Respective The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the responsibilities of accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not trustees and examiner required for this year under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the Charities Act) and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to: · examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act, · to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the Charities Act, and · to state whether particular matters have come to my attention. Basis of independent My examination was carried out in accordance with general examiner’s statement Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair’ view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below. Independent In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my examiner's attention (other than that disclosed below ) statement* 1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in, any material respect, the requirements: • to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; and • to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the Charities Act have not been met; or 2. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
