Charity Commission Report 2025

Dorset Woodturners Association (DWA) has had another very successful year. The meetings were held at St Ives and St Leonard’s Village Hall, Ferndown and were a combination of evening and all-day Saturday events.

The programme involved demonstrations by professional woodturners who covered such topics as colouring techniques, turning hollow forms, texturing turnings with and without texturing tools, basic tool techniques, safety and air brushing.

We also had demonstrations from our own members including our chairman who received the accolade of Professional Registered Turner. These demonstrations included making musical instruments, brickwork designs, turning a baby’s rattle, Christmas snowman, and how to turn a birdhouse.

Two evenings were devoted to a ‘Hands-on Experience’ This was where experienced members demonstrated a technique they were familiar with and then taught other members how to do it. Some of the areas covered included wood identification, pyrography, sharpening & pen turning.

The ‘Chairman’s Challenge’ again proved popular. This was where the Chairman demonstrated a technique and ‘challenged’ the members to duplicate it. Some of these included turning a birdhouse, a brickwork design, turn something from a piece of wood 6x6x2 inches, a baby’s rattle and a snowman.

We have continued to integrate with the general public through our Facebook page and attendance at the local village fair. We have also had a presence at three other county fairs where we have been able to discuss the DWA and to recruit new members.

We have also held two ‘Zoom’ meetings, one in December and the other in January. This was to avoid members having to drive during these two winter months. Both meetings were by professional demonstrators, one on wood preparation and colouring techniques by Chestnut Products while the other was by Pat Carroll, wood artist – both very interesting and instructive.

Next year’s programme includes more professional demonstrators as well as our own members demonstrating and instructing. The ‘Chairman’s Challenge’ is now well established with the first one being to turn a culinary item.
