1.1 Ba515 of preparatlon of flnanclal statements
The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Accounting and Reporting by
Charitie5.' Statement of recommended Practlce appllcable to charlties preparing their accounts in
accordance with the Financial Reportin8 Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Irelan(i
IFR51021 (effective l January 20191155ued by the Charlty Commisslon - (Charlties SORP IFRS1021,
the Flnanclal Reporting Standard applicable In the UK and Republic of Ireland IFR5102} and the
Charities Act 2011.
The Spine Foundation constitutes a publlc benefit entlty as defined by FRS102. The financlal
statements are prepared under the historical cost convention. The finan¢lal statements are
presented in pounds sterling, whlch Is also the functional currency of the trust. Rounding of
mount5 shown in the financial statements Is to nearest pound.
1.2 Reconciliation with previous Generally Accepted Accounting Practice
In preparing these accounts, the Trustees have consldered whether in applying the accountin8
policies required by FR5102 and the Charltles SORP IFRS1021 the restatement of comparative
items was required.
No restatement5 were required.
1.3 Going concern
The Trustees consider that there are no materlal uncertaintles about the Trusys ability to continue
as a going concern. With respect to the next reporting period, the most Sl8nificant areas of
uncertaSnty that affect the carrying value of assets held by the Trust are the level of investment
returns and the performance of investment markets.
1.4 Fund accountlng
General fun(is are unrestrlcted funds which are available for use at the direction of the Trustees
in furtherance of the general objectives of the charity and which have not been designated for
other purposes.
Unrealised gains and losses on investments are shown in the heading 'GainllLossl on revaluation
of listed investments, in the Statement of Finar)cial Activities.
1.5 Incoming resources
All income is recognised once the charity has entitlement to the income. it is probable that the
income will be received, and the amount of income receivable can be measured reliably.

1.6 Expenditure
Expendlture Is reco8nised once there is a leBal or constructive obligation to transfer economic
benefit to a third party, it is probable that a tron5fer of economic benefits will be required In
settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured rellably. Expenditure Is classified
by activity. The costs of each activity are made vp of the total of direct costs and shared costs,
including 5UPPOrt costs involved in undertaking each actlvity. Direct costs attributable to a single
activity are allocated directly to that actNlty. Shared costs whlch contrlbute to more than one
activity and support costs whlch are not attrlbuted to a single attivity are apportioned betsveen
those actlvltles on a ba515 conslstent wlth the use of resources.
Grants payable are charged In the year when the offer Is made except in those cases where the
offer is conditional, such grants belng recognlsed a5 expenditure when the conditlons attachlng
are fulfilled. Grants offered sublect to conditlons which have not been met at the perlod end are
noted as a commitment but not accrued as expenditure.
1.7 Debtors
Other debtors are ￿cOgnISed at the settlement amount. Prepayments are valued at the amount
prepaid net of any trade discounts due.
1.8 Cash at bank and in hand
Cash at bank and In hand includes cash and short term highly Ilquid Investments wlth a short
maturlty of three months or less from the date of acqulsition or opening of the deposlt or similar
account.
1.9 Llablllties and provlslons
Liabilities are recognised when there is an obligation at the Balance Sheet date as a result of a past
event, it Is probable that a transfer of economlc benefit will be required in settlement and the
amount of the settlement can be estimated reliably. Liabilities are recogni5ed at the amount that
the charity anticipates it wlll pay to settle the debt or the amount it has received as advanced
payments for the 8oods or service5 it must provide. Provi510ll5 are measured at the best estimate
of the amount5 required tQ Settle the obligation. Where the effect of the time value of money is
material, the provision is based on the present value of those amounts, discounted at the pre-tax
discount rate that reflects the risks speciflc to the liabillty. The unwinding of the discount is
recognised within interest payable and similar charges.
1.10 General information
The foundation is a charitable trust operating in England and Wales. It is also registered with the

1.11 Judgements
In the applicatlon of the Trusys accounting policles which are described above, management Is
required to make judgement, estlmate5 and a5sumptlons about the carrying value of assets and
Ilabilities that are not readily apparent from other sources. The estimates and underlylng
assumptions are based on judgement and experience together wlth any other factors that are
consldered to be relevant. Actual results may differ from these estlmates.
Estimates and any underlylng assumptlons used are revlewed on a continulng basis. Revlslons to
accountin8 estlmates are recognised In the period in which the estimate is revised if the revision
affects only that period, or in the perlod of the revision and future perlods If the revlslon affects
both the current perlod and subsequent perlods.
