## TAWE PICKLEBALL CLUB
## TRUSTEE ANNUAL REPORT 2023-2024
Tawe Pickleball Club was formed in 2021 to promote community participation in healthy recreation for the benefit of inhabitants of the Swansea Valley and beyond through the provision of facilities for playing Pickleball.
Pickleball is widely recognised as one of the fastest-growing sports in the UK and is suitable for all ages, especially youngsters and seniors.
The club is based in Ystradgynlais and attracts players from the surrounding area but also from as far afield as Neath, the Amman Valley and Swansea. Its principal venue is the Ystradgynlais Sports Centre, part of the Maesydderwen School campus, where it hires a sports hall that accommodates four pickleball courts for three sessions per week.
The sessions are: Monday (4pm-5.30pm), Wednesday (7pm-8pm) and Sunday (11am-1pm), All are welcome.
There are also opportunities for outdoor play adjacent to the hall, which has proved popular with members and guests when weather permits
The club has experienced significant changes during the year with the sudden resignations of the Chairman, Treasurer and two Trustees. A number of founding members also left, leading to a temporary impasse in administration and a reduction in membership.
The consequently vacant positions were filled without delay. However, the new Administration experienced difficulties in gaining control of the club’s financial affairs and the reduction in membership had a negative impact on income. This situation has now been resolved and the new team has introduced several strategies to generate new members and re-invigorate the club’s charitable activities, with an encouraging degree of success.
At time of writing, the club has approximately 30 members, ranging in age from 15 to 75, balanced almost equally between male and female players. Men and women compete together on equal terms. Approximately half of these have joined during the year as a result of promotional activity by the Trustees.
During the year, the club secured the services of one of Wales’ top players, a Welsh international, who undertook monthly coaching sessions, made available to players at all skill levels. The response was very good and widely appreciated by those taking advantage of the opportunity.
The club continues to retain an interest in three outdoor pickleball courts created at its inception at the Ystradgynlais Welfare Grounds. The courts are situated alongside tennis courts within a fenced-off area but are in poor condition. Club Trustees attend meetings of the Welfare Grounds Association, which operates the site, with a view to obtaining grant funding to resurface them and return them to
a playable condition. Once achieved, these would provide opportunities for club members and the general public to play at any time of day, which would be of particular benefit to retired people and youngsters, who could access the facility for after-school sessions. However, the uncertainty surrounding the club’s financial situation has led to delays in progressing this ongoing aspiration. It is hoped that progress may be made in the months to come.
Tawe Pickleball Club’s mission remains to make pickleball accessible to as many people as possible, of all ages and abilities, and will continue to seek opportunities to do so.
