## TAWE PICKLEBALL CLUB 

## TRUSTEE ANNUAL REPORT 2022-23 

Tawe Pickleball Club was formed in 2021 to promote community participation in healthy recreation for the benefit of inhabitants of the Swansea Valley and beyond through the provision of facilities for playing Pickleball. 

Pickleball is widely recognised as one of the fastest-growing sports in the UK and is suitable for all ages, especially youngsters and seniors. 

At time of writing, the club has approximately 50 members, ranging in age from 13 to 75, balanced almost equally between male and female players. Men and women compete together on equal terms. 

The club is based in Ystradgynlais and attracts players from the surrounding area but also from as far afield as Neath and Swansea. Its principal venue is the Ystradgynlais Sports Centre, part of the Maesydderwen School campus, where it hires a sports hall that accommodates four pickleball courts for three sessions per week. 

The sessions are: Monday (4pm-5.30pm), Wednesday (7pm-8pm) and Sunday (11am-1pm), All are welcome. 

There are also opportunities for outdoor play adjacent to the hall, which has proved popular with members and guests when weather permits. 

With the aid of grant funding, secured in 2021, the club purchased nets, paddles and other accessories which are stored at the Centre and are made freely available to all users for both indoor and outdoor play. 

The club also retains an interest in three outdoor pickleball courts created at its inception at the Ystradgynlais Welfare Grounds. The courts are situated alongside tennis courts within a fencedoff area but are in poor condition. Club Trustees attend meetings of the Welfare Grounds Association, which operates the site, with a view to obtaining grant funding to resurface them and return them to a playable condition. Once achieved, these would provide opportunities for club members and the general public to play at any time of day, which would be of particular benefit to retired people and youngsters, who could access the facility for after-school sessions. 

The club is also keen to provide coaching to help players develop their skills. However, we do not currently have anyone with the relevant qualifications. This aspiration is being actively pursued. 

In the summer of 2023, an Open Day was held at Maesydderwen with a view to developing links with sister clubs in the wider area. This was well attended with players coming from Neath, Swansea, Brecon and Ebbw Vale. A company selling pickleball accessories also attended and provided advice on a variety of items, e.g. paddles (racquets). 



Tawe Pickleball Club’s mission remains to make pickleball accessible to as many people as possible, of all ages and abilities, and will continue to seek opportunities to do so.
