Structure, Governance and Management
A is for Aphra is governed by its constitution and managed by its Board of Trustees.
This reporting period covered the charity's establishment following registration. The trustees worked together to establish appropriate governance arrangements, consider the charity's strategic direction and begin developing plans to advance its charitable purposes.
Charitable Objects and Public Benefit
The charity exists to advance education, heritage and the arts by promoting public awareness and appreciation of the life, works and legacy of Aphra Behn, particularly her historic association with the City of Canterbury.
The trustees have had due regard to the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit when exercising their powers and planning the charity's activities.
Achievements and Performance
This was the charity's third reporting period following registration.
During the reporting period, the trustees continued to work towards the charity's charitable objectives by developing educational resources and supporting public engagement with the life, work and legacy of Aphra Behn. The charity worked collaboratively with a number of local organisations, most notably the Canterbury Commemoration Society, to help realise the long-standing ambition of creating a permanent public statue of Aphra Behn in Canterbury.
While the charity played an important role in developing educational materials, raising awareness and supporting the wider project, all fundraising for the statue was undertaken through the Canterbury Commemoration Society. Accordingly, the charity did not receive grants, donations or other income, nor did it incur any expenditure during the reporting period.
The collaborative work undertaken during this period laid the foundations for the successful delivery of the Aphra Behn statue project, with the unveiling planned for early 2025.
Financial Review
The charity remained financially dormant throughout the reporting period.
No income was received, no expenditure was incurred and the charity held no assets or liabilities.
The trustees did not open or operate a bank account during this period, as there was no financial activity requiring one.
