## **Trustees Annual Report**

Year ended 31st January 2022

The trustees present their first annual report covering the period from 09 June 2021 (Date of placement on Register of Charities) to 31st January 2022.

The objective of The Qima Foundation is to provide poverty relief through:

(a) designing and implementing sustainable agriculture projects that support farming communities to generate a sustainable income and be self-sufficient through the adoption of environmentally and economically sustainable farming practices that contribute to soil health, productivity and yield improvements, as well as efficient water management systems;

(b) supporting the socioeconomic development of women through increasing access to knowledge and resources necessary for women to enter the workforce confidently and create sustainable livelihoods for themselves and their families;

(c) designing and implementing education projects and programmes that provide quality education and future career opportunities for disadvantaged children and youth; and

(d) such other means as the Trustees may from time to time see fit.

The Qima Foundation is run by the Trustees on a voluntary basis.

The Foundation received income from private donations only. These were used to fund the operations of the charity in the year.

## Activity:

The Foundation carried out the design of a genetically verified coffee seedling nursery. The advantage of this nursery is to guarantee that the seedlings disbursed to farmers from this nursery, are of the correct variety and quality. This presents excellent value for coffee farmers as it lowers the mortality rate of planted seedlings, and increases productivity as they fruit. The decision of which seedlings to plant is one of the most important decisions a smallholder farmer makes, with the consequence of the decision spanning over the lifetime of the tree.

The Foundation also carried out the design of a cost effective, scalable, irrigation water reservoir. This is to combat water scarcity, and the multitude of consequences to farmers suffering from it. This newly designed reservoir costs a fifth of the amount a traditional reservoir would cost, all with locally available materials, resulting in a practical, scalable solution towards water scarcity.

The above projects were selected to start with based on a needs assessment carried out at community level with in-country operators, and own market research. Considered projects included (but were not limited to) agricultural practices, access to financial services, processing infrastructure and knowledge, household economics, land use, farm management, gender dynamics within the household and the community.

## Looking forward:

The Qima Foundation looks to continue its work and partnerships to expand its impact to reach as many beneficiaries as possible, and deliver value to beneficiaries in the areas described in the objectives of the CIO.
