## **Battersea Befriending Network** ## **Annual Report for the** ## **Annual General Meeting December 2[nd] 2022** **Registered Charity Number 1194593** 1 ## **Chair of Trustees’ Report** I am delighted to say that BBN has had another very constructive and worthwhile year. We started in January with an in-person ‘away-day’ for the committee to evaluate and reflect on the work of the previous year. We agreed objectives and plans for 2022. In summary these were: - To clarify who our service is for and how we prioritise referrals and manage our waiting list - To maintain our commitment to a maximum of 45 befriendees - To review and clarify the key roles within BBN to spread the workload more widely - To create an additional role of Volunteer Co-ordinator - To recruit a new Treasurer - To undertake some much needed fund raising - To move the BBN bank account to the Charity Aid Foundation - To explore and develop small group work and links to other community activities - To monitor and evaluate our quality and effectiveness This was a helpful start to the year, and we have managed to achieve these objectives in a most positive way. We recruited two new treasurers, Harry O’Riordan and Peter Wolstenholme who have worked as an effective job share. Unfortunately, it has been a very slow process opening the CAF bank account which has meant that in the meantime we have had to depend on the goodwill and forbearance of Helen Trout who has continued to deal with the practical financial matters. We are extremely grateful to Helen for her patience and dedication. We have had an outstanding year of raising funds thanks to our subcommittee of Vicky Milner, Richard Trout, Harry O’Riordan and Peter Wolstenholme. Please see the Treasurers’ report for more details. As the Professional Advisor and Befriending Co-ordinator set out in their reports, we have managed to sustain the majority of befriending relationships and keep the waiting list at a manageable level. We have been very fortunate in being able to benefit from the contribution of Trish Daniel, a long term participant in BBN, who agreed to be our Volunteer Co-ordinator. Trish works closely with Tara and Richard for at 2 least one day per week (often more) and is a real asset to the team. Trish has undertaken very productive outreach to recruit new volunteers to be trained as BBN befrienders. Despite a somewhat slow and discouraging start (in common with most voluntary organisations), her persistence and determination is now really paying off. We have begun to take some small but positive steps with the plan for small group work and have made some good links with other community organisations in the borough. Now we have additional funding, we are looking forward to growing this aspect of BBN next year, whether it be coffee mornings, walking, singing, carpentry, gardening, art, or many other local delightful possibilities. Reflecting on this year which has certainly had many challenges affecting us all (and particularly many of our befriendees who are facing hardship and increasing anxieties) I am pleased to say that BBN has sustained and grown in a careful and steady way. Our Professional Advisor, Tara Osman, provides very thoughtful wisdom and perceptiveness, which means that the BBN volunteers feel well supported, and which is greatly appreciated. She has been a joy to work with. The conscientious commitment of support and kindness from the committee and all involved has been tremendous, and I am proud to be part of BBN. ## **Sarah Rackham** ## **Chair of Trustees** 3 ## **Treasurers’ Report** Peter and I joined the committee as joint Treasurers at the start of this year and have been made to feel most welcome by the rest of the committee. We had the pleasure of meeting the wider BBN community at our Summer Party and have enjoyed learning about BBN’s incredible work. Understandably, the current economic climate and demand on services has made the raising of funds difficult. Despite this, the excellent work of the fundraising sub-committee in promoting the valuable work of BBN and its need for additional funds has enabled us to secure grants from both the Postcode Society Trust and Big Local. This has meant that as at 31[st] October 2022, BBN is in a sustainable financial position. We are pleased to report that for the 11 months ended 31[st] October 2022, BBN had receipts from grants and donations of £31,205.69 and payments of £15,248.95. This has left our cash reserves at a healthy £30,839.39. The success of our fundraising this year brings our total receipts over the £25,000 threshold for the first time, which has meant we must fulfil some additional requirements as a registered charity. One such requirement is to submit an Annual Report, which outlines our objectives and achievements as a charity. As a committee, we voluntarily decided to do this last year and you will find a copy of this report on the Charity Commission website. We are therefore well placed to prepare the same for this year. We have also arranged for this year’s accounts to be independently reviewed. Finally, both Peter and I would like to extend a massive thank you to Helen Trout who has continued to perform many of the Treasurer duties during this transition year. We are in the process of opening a new bank account, which will relieve her of this work as well as provide a more appropriate account for the charity’s needs. We look forward to another successful year with BBN. ## **Harry O’Riordan and Peter Wolstenholme** ## **Treasurers** 4 ## **Befriending Co-ordinator’s Report** This time last year I reported that we were supporting 38 befriending relationships, shared between 31 befrienders. Although for some time during this year we had as many as 40 relationships shared between 34 volunteers, those numbers have in the last few months reduced for various reasons (including, just two weeks ago, the sad death of one of our oldest befriendees) to 37 befriending relationships, shared between 31 befrienders. However, we will very soon be back to over 40 people being befriended, as we very recently completed the training of six excellent new volunteers. Not only that, but we already have a new training course scheduled for February 2023, for which seven volunteers have already signed up. This fact in itself is a tribute to our longest-standing befriender, Trish Daniel, who in April very kindly stepped forward to take on the role of Volunteer Coordinator (the idea of which was mooted in my report for the last AGM). Trish has entered into the role with enormous dedication and enthusiasm, and has well and truly made it her own: not only making personal contact with each volunteer (often by in-person meetings) in order to assess their suitability for befriending, but carving out new channels for recruitment, which, as also reported last year, had begun to tail off. This has resulted in record expressions of interest, and even if a discouraging number pulled out before the actual training course (as always tends to happen), the quality of those remaining was high and those unable to make the last course for personal reasons were very keen to book up as soon as possible – hence the scheduling of a new course so soon after the last. BBN therefore has reason to be grateful to Trish for taking on and growing this role, and I personally most of all, as she has taken a considerable weight off my ageing shoulders! The chief remaining aspect of my own role – receiving and recording referrals and liaising with the referring services – confirms the increasing need for our volunteer befrienders. Our waiting list currently stands at 32, exactly the same as last year (though with now an equal number of male and female referrals, where in the past there have been far more male) and this despite all those successfully matched in the meantime by Tara Osman, our Professional Advisor. A part of the reason for this is that if a befriender moves on and their befriendee expresses the wish and need to have a new befriender, the re-matching of that person is given priority. It has become a matter of policy that once a person has come under the care of BBN, that care remains BBN’s responsibility even if the original befriender can, for 5 whatever reason, no longer continue. For this sense of both professional responsibility and deep compassion which Tara instils into BBN – as for so much else – I must close by expressing my own warmest thanks and admiration. ## **Richard Trout** ## **Befriending Co-ordinator** 6 ## **Professional Advisor’s Report** I would like to start by paying tribute to our volunteer befrienders. It is my privilege to work with them and I know that they are not always conscious of the impact they have on the lives of the people they befriend. A few months ago one of our experienced befrienders expressed her worry during our support and supervision group that she was perhaps not as proactive as she could be in contacting her befriendee, and that maybe her befriendee needed more from her. I promised to call the befriendee to ask for her thoughts. The befriendee’s reply was unequivocal: “My befriender is amazing, she’s part of the family now, a sister, my son calls her Auntie. I couldn’t wish for more and am incredibly grateful for her involvement in my life over the past eight years”. Each befriender works alongside a mentor, likewise volunteers, who provide invaluable support and guidance to befrienders as well as being another point of contact for befriendees should they experience any difficulties with their befriender. This year we have developed a 2-hour training session for new mentors in recognition of the unique role that they play in supporting volunteers but also in ensuring that the way in which the befriending relationship is conducted meets our standards. We have recruited new mentors from within our community of befrienders and are actively seeking to recruit more mentors to enable us to expand further. Whilst we have trained several new befrienders this year, we have also had a significant turnover of befrienders, several of whom have moved on after completing one year of befriending (our minimum commitment). We always offer the chance to be introduced to a new volunteer to anyone whose befriender moves on as we see ourselves as a source of ongoing contact rather than a time-limited service. At present we have 10 befriendees who are on their second befriender, and one or two who are about to meet number 3! The challenge for us is to be able to maintain this long-term support whilst still taking people off the waiting list. To better meet the needs of people for social contact whilst they are on the waiting list we are in the process of instigating a programme of social meet-ups in cafes and 7 community venues which will serve as both a point of contact in themselves and also as an opportunity to get to know people and sign-post them to other activities and organisations that we know. In my role I also have the flexibility to accompany people to new places if they need support to do so, and see this as a small but very satisfying part of my work. These social meetups will be in addition to the individual meetings that are held with each person referred and which are the key way in which we assess whether befriending is the right thing for each individual, and what that person hopes for from befriending. In addition to offering social contact we are in a key position as a network to pick up on any issues affecting the health and wellbeing of our befriendees due to the nature of the one-to-one contact we have, and this year we have raised 3 concerns about adult abuse or neglect with Wandsworth Adult Services as well as intervening in many other cases where our befriendees needed help with issues such as accessing Covid vaccinations, seeking help with suicidal ideation, establishing details of their mental health care plan and so forth. Where the help needed is beyond the scope of the individual befriender or mentor I am able to assist, advise and liaise with other services as appropriate. Looking ahead to next year we are in the process of reviewing the mix of group and individual support and supervision that we offer to volunteers and are hoping to add in some elements of both further training and opportunities to gather as a group to enhance the experience of existing volunteers and attract more volunteers to our network. Lastly it has been a great pleasure this year to work with our trustees who have achieved so much in terms of fundraising and putting together an important set of policies that help guide our work day to day, and most of all with the people I meet once a fortnight to discuss our work - Richard, Trish and Sarah, truly a committed, hardworking and inspirational trio. ## **Tara Osman** ## **Professional Advisor** 8 **----- Start of picture text -----**
