Achievements and performance
The ongoing effects of human action& habitat10&8, climate extremes and unsuslainable agricultural
practices conlinue to have a devastating impact on British wildlife. The period 2024 into 2025
r¢plicated th¢ pwiou5 yearfs ¢omplim¢nt of hedgehogs very often admitted in an emaciate
dchydrated and unstable condition. clearly unable to find sufficient nourishmenl to survive. 'fhis is
now beyond simply being a'woryin8 trend,.
We are pleased that we are now able to offer treatment and care lo all small british native wild
mammals and we wish to add more species to our list including wtentially voles. shrews. moles and
leverets etc eventually developing to foxes and badgffl

Our outreach education talk 'The Life of a Hedgeho￿ ran numerous events rdising awareness in
schools and the local community
The Board of Trustees and th¢ Charitys Management team are proud that in our care many hedgehogs
and small wild mammals were sucC￿$[u11Y rehabilitaied and returned to their natural habitats.
However our team is just part of a wider one consisting of the people who keep us afloa( our
benefactors and patrons who continue to donate to our charifv and our students and volunieers for give
thcir tiTne and care loo. We are, ofcourse, d(Yply grateful to the rescuers who discover a sick,
¢ollap5ed or injured hedgehog or wild mammal and stop lo pick them up instead of walking past. then
keep them waThn and find help. You are my hero'& all of yow without you so much wildlife would be
lost.

We do nol currently have a permaneni in house vel but we h8ve built up x mutually beneficial

In 2024 we admitted and treated 106 wild mammals referred from members of th¢ public, veterinary
¢liiiiLs. Lomwall RSI)LA and other local hedgehog resLues. We have noliced & mark¢d improvem¢nt
on our hedgehog r¢l¢ase rates compared to previous years which w¢ attribule lo adopting lh¢ research
findings of Van de l•eyer el al inlo the medication and prolocols of roundwomi and lungworni in
hedgehogs. We wish to note ihat we place great imporlance on our attcndance at ihe bi annual
International Hedgehog Conference each January when the latest ￿rtine￿I re￿￿h on hedgehog
survival and r¢habililalion is d¢liv¢r¢d.
We have invested in two mor¢ in-poticnt in¢ubators that Can bc p￿S￿d into use for neonates and any
mammal requiring warniih, syringe feeds and 24 hours special &gre at home, ensurtng continuous care
beyond regular admission hours.

regular admission hours

Despil¢ having to Close while this work was completed we athnitted 94 hedgehogs, 4 wild rabbit kils
and 6 w(*)d mice and answered 329 telephone calls. Thi5 w&$ our first year for admitting 811 small
wild mammals.
In 2024 patient admission5 saw a sharp rise in numbets of hedgchogs admittcd due to human related
causes including strimmcr injuric4road casualty accidents and dog attacks highlighting the need to
stress how importanl preventative aciions can be to the species

An induction training presenlation has r￿entlY been wrÉtt¢n for all new volunteer Wildlife Carers.
Essential training includes uwlating safeguardin8 in schools and collegeslNSPCC online CPD and
updating of enhan¢ed dIs¢losu￿1D￿S for the Manager to ciimply with our safeguarding wlicy and
attending CPD British Wildlife R¢habilitation Council online training to comply with our registrdtion
Social mcdia continues to be at the heart of our public awareness educational strategy including daily

We have two new Volunteer Wild Mammal Carets and two Soft Release Foster Carers
We have a new whatsapp group of 10 voluntary drivers which is proving very successful and has
broadened our geographical r￿h.

from Cornwall County Council S.E.N.D. in relation to Post 16 Special Educational Needs students,
one student from Cornwall Emplo)Ineni supp)￿ Penwith College student's work placements,
one Duke of F.dinburgh student placements., one Duchy College Animal MattagTemenl student and a
resident long temj Truro and Penwith College Wildlife Vet student. W¢ have also hostcd
worklcharity hours for an employee from the Civil S¢rvice

Total income for the year amounted 10 £21.518 (2024-. £8,222) with total expenditure including
apital of £26,964 (2024.. £4,047) leading to a reduclion in c&sh of £5,446 (2024.. increase of £4,175)
