## **Constitution, Governance and Management**
Hedgepigs and Hoglets Rescue is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) registered charity number 1194516 which was constituted on 18th May, 2021.
## **Governance and Management**
The charity is governed by Trustees who hold quarterly meetings, or more if deemed necessary. Our governing document states we should strive to have a minimum quorum of 3 trustees. Further Trustees may be appointed following the assent of all present trustees at a meeting or meetings. Further Trustees must be carefully chosen, giving due care and attention to the charity`s governing document, ethos and values and the potential Trustee`s own expertise relating to the charity`s purposes, public benefit requirements, charity law and ability to move the charity forward. New Trustee`s would receive a copy of the charity`s governing document and associated objects and activities and would have access to the Charity Commission`s website and the “Essential Trustee Guidance” stating their responsibilities and copies of our previous meeting minutes, annual reports and accounts. Hedgepigs and Hoglets Rescue have registered and signed up to the Fundraising Regulator Code of Practice to demonstrate our commitment to high fundraising standards and best practice to give greater confidence to our donors and patrons. In the event of the need to purchase any large capital items these should be presented to the Trustees for authorisation
The Charity`s Organisation and Trustees are responsible for ensuring that the charity carries out it`s purposes and plans for the future to the public benefit and in compliance with the governing document. The day to day running of the rescue charity is carried out by the charity`s founder and Operations/Animal Care Manager with support, when necessary, from our Wildlife Carer/s or our Volunteer Drivers. All staff are currently employed on a voluntary vocational basis, we do not, as yet, employ any paid staff. The trustees would like to express their thanks to our volunteers and patrons, we are humbled by your support, dedication and generosity.
## **Statement on Public Benefit**
The objectives, activities, achievements and performance sections of this report clearly set out the activities which the charity undertakes for the public benefit. The Trustees confirm that they have complied with their duty in section 4 of the Charities Act, 2006 to have due regard to the public benefit guidance published by The Charity Commission in determining the activities undertaken by the charity.
## **Aims and Objectives**
## **Charitable objects**
1. For the benefit of the public to further the conservation and preservation of the Hedgehog and small mammal species
2. For the benefit of the public to relieve the suffering and distress of hedgehogs who are sick, injured or orphaned and in need of care and attention by providing a rescue, care and rehabilitation service with the aim of releasing such mammals back into the wild whenever possible
3. To advance the education of the public in the study of hedgehogs as to their care, methods of treatment, research, conservation and habitat
## **Achievements**
During the period May 2023 to April, 2024 we have admitted and cared for over 89 hedgehogs. This figure was lower than the previous 2 years (in 2022 we admitted 167 hedgehogs and in 2023 184) due to relocation of the rescue and the unfortunate impact of the housing crisis upon our ability to find suitable premises and location. We look forward to a period of stability once permanent premises are found.

## **Hedgehogs**
We had considerable success using hydrotherapy for several hedgehogs to strengthen limbs following injury and loss of toes and as a means of physiotherapy following a long period in rescue due to ringworm
A larger than normal number of hedgehogs were admitted in a collapsed state with hypothermia, starvation and dehydration with a `wobbly` mobility and therefore a poor prognosis and despite being warmed up slowly and administered fluid therapy we sadly found ourselves giving palliative care
Three sets of 6 hoglets were admitted during summer and all survived to release stage
Four older hedgehogs were admitted with lungworm or respiratory infection requiring oxygen therapy from our oxygenator and ICU, nebulise therapy, antibiotics, pain relief and constant warmth
A Wood Mouse was admitted from York in a state of torpor on the cycle path, initially being pipette fed every two hours until able to feed independently and later released.
## **Ectoparasites**
A larger than normal number of hedgehogs were admitted with a heavy burden of myaisis (external fly eggs) which is a more common worrying trend. We are also noticing that myaisis is being found later in the year, even into November and December due to warmer conditions. However there have been fewer cases of flea burdens.
## **Endoparasites**
Cases of roundworm have been high, with lungworm and associated pneumonia prevailing during the autumn juvenile season of September to December. Fluke has been low for us this year
## **Purchases/Resources**
3.5 metre playchute for our nature play connection activities used for St Just Fun Playgroup important working with children and their parents. Children learn through play and Mums and Dads give role modelling and are responsible for encouraging a love of wildlife too, promotion of St Just hog hole initiative

Purchase of TLC50 incubator from Brinsea with voucher offer during Hedgehog Awareness Week. For larger hedgehogs and those with hoglets or small mammals
## **Festivals, Markets and Fairs**
We have hosted stalls at Bosavern Community Farm Harvest Celebration, Morrab Library Spring Fair and St Buryan Market. We hosted a table at St Just Town Council`s hog hole initiative and visited Pendeen and St Just Schools to deliver hog hole frames and promote hedgehog highways.
## **Staff Training and Research Awareness**
This year our Wildlife Care/Operations Manager attended the bi-annual **International Hedgehog Rehabilitators Conference** held at Hartpury University in Gloucester on the 12th and 13th January, 2024 where we learned about The National Hedgehog Research Strategy. This project is a concerted effort between the BHPS, PTES and the
IUCN to halt the hedgehogs` continuing decline and to support more sustainable populations across Britain once again. It aims to unify and strengthen existing conservation efforts whilst engaging many more people, groups and industries in scaled up efforts working towards practical goals and research. Hedgepigs and Hoglets Rescue will take part in this research as a camera trap set up hub next April as part of the National Hedgehog Monitoring Programme. This is a 3 year monitoring project that uses a network of camera traps to give robust annual hedgehog population estimates across a range of habitats and regions in the UK
Hedgehog centre rehabilitation isn`t regulated legally at the moment, but this will be coming in time. We know how important it is to keep proper records of medications, treatments, protocols and and other data. A new national database is being designed by the BHPS and other agencies in a collaboration and we look forward to using this online protocol, becoming paperless and being able to share our data with the appropriate agencies for the future of the species. Wildlife rehabilitation records could represent a potentially valuable source of information relating to the conservation of the hedgehog population in the UK.
We are finding more and more that hedgehogs are being admitted in a more dire state than was previously the case since we started rescuing in 2016; they are being admitted malnourished, dehydrated, hypothermic and very often, despite the hedgehog`s survival being of paramount importance, we find we are administering palliative care. We do our very best to get the message out that members of the public should pick up a sick, injured or poorly hedgehog (who is very often `out in the day`) straight away, but we hear many tales of people walking past them for days without seeking help to save them until they are collapsed. Dr Philip Baker gave us a talk about his analysis of 20,000 rescue records spanning a thirteen year period and he noted that 31% of the hedgehogs that died or were euthanased perished within 48 hours of being admitted. Further research will show why this is the case and if there are any improvements we and other rescues can make to improve our triage procedures. Dr Baker states that hedgehogs are declining but we don`t know by how much as yet until the aforementioned research data is examined.
In response to research from Dr Van Weyer and other researchers from the IHRC conference on the efficacy of 3 different medications treating capillaria (roundworm and lungworm) and other such treatments we have subsequently rewritten our standard operating procedures and reviewed all of our treatment and medication protocols, in turn we have experienced greater survival rates, less drug usage and shorter times in captivity for our animals. This data will be reviewed in 2025. Consequently we have designed a new triage sheet which we share with our dedicated vets practices.
This learning has assisted us in updating our protocols and in preparing for the possibility of future licensing laws in England. Our Wildlife Care Manager is DBS checked and is the charity`s designated safeguarding lead and has completed the N.S.P.C.C. CPD training in Child Protection in Primary Schools to meet the requirements of our Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy
**The Hedgehog Database Project** is a brand new and very exciting database that is in the process of being designed and is funded by the BHPS. The research data that will be gathered from it will then go back to the BHPS to inform future research. We were given the opportunity to test the draft database at the International Hedgehog Rehabilitators Conference and give feedback
## **Delivering Education**
Social media continues to be the mainstay of our daily education programme and is an efficient conduit to raising awareness of current issues in the form of facebook, instagram and twitter. Our audience reach continues to grow and we have over 2,500 followers. With the help of our patrons, we plan to continue developing this audience and promoting education and conservation messages. We balance out our daily diary facebook post`s with evidence based ones because we believe it is important to get the message across that wildlife conservation plays a crucial role in regulating our climate and that through saving wildlife we are saving the planet too. The World Wildlife Fund states that the presence of an abundant variety of nature is vital for the balance of habitats. If we start to have local extinction of hedgehogs for example then this is an indicator of the poor health of our eco-system, therefore by providing conditions where hedgehogs can thrive in our gardens, parks, cemeteries, allotments etc we are supporting that balance. Put very simply wild native mammals preserve biodiversity, they pollinate plants and maintain soil health, helping to fight against climate change.
We wish to offer day placements to college students, veterinary nurses and vet students in the coming year

## **Future Plans**
We have future plans to move to a larger purpose built hedgehog and small mammal hospital building because we have now run out of room to expand at our current location, giving us the ability to admit many more patients including small mammals such as wood mice, shrews and all other small mammals. In time we wish to expand to offer triage and treatment to foxes and badgers. We also wish to invite Volunteer Ambulance Drivers to join our team. This idea is becoming commonplace for hedgehog rescues nationally using a whatsapp group to promote pick ups and this is something we are definitely going to trial in the coming months.
Moving to a new base will enable us to apply for more grant and crowdfunding to purchase new vet grade cages, a resource that is badly needed in our rescue
