Our governing document states we must have a minimum quorum of 3 trustees. Further Trustees may be appointed following the assent of all present trustees at a meeting or meetings. Further Trustees must be carefully chosen, giving due care and attention to the charity`s governing document, ethos and values and the potential Trustee`s own expertise relating to the charity`s purposes, public benefit requirements, charity law and ability to move the charity forward. New Trustee`s would receive a copy of the charity`s governing document and associated objects and activities and would have access to the Charity Commission`s website and the “Essential Trustee Guidance” stating their responsibilities and copies of our previous meeting minutes, annual reports and accounts. Hedgepigs and Hoglets Rescue have registered and signed up to the Fundraising Regulator Code of Practice to demonstrate our commitment to high fundraising standards and best practice to give greater confidence to our donors and patrons. In the event of the need to purchase any large capital items these should be presented to the Trustees for authorisation ## **The Charity`s Organisation** The Chair and Trustees are responsible for ensuring that the charity carries out it`s purposes and plans for the future to the public benefit and in compliance with the governing document. The day to day running of the rescue charity is carried out by the charity`s founder and Operations/Animal Care Manager with support, when necessary, from our Wildlife Carer/s. All staff are currently employed on a voluntary vocational basis. The trustees would like to express their thanks to our volunteers and patrons, we are humbled by your support, dedication and generosity. ## **Statement on Public Benefit** The objectives, activities, achievements and performance sections of this report clearly set out the activities which the charity undertakes for the public benefit. The Trustees confirm that they have complied with their duty in section 4 of the Charities Act, 2006 to have due regard to the public benefit guidance published by The Charity Commission in determining the activities undertaken by the charity. ## **Aims and Objectives** 1. For the benefit of the public to further the conservation and preservation of the hedgehog and small wild mammal species in Cornwall and the south west 2. For the benefit of the public to relieve the suffering and distress of hedgehogs - and small wild mammals who are sick, injured or orphaned and in need of a care and rehabilitation service with the aim of releasing such mammals back into the wild whenever possible 3. To advance the education of the public in the study of hedgehogs and small wild mammals as to their care, methods of treatment, research, conservation and habitat ## **Achievements** __________________________________________________________________ During the period May 2022 to April, 2023 we have admitted and cared for over 124 hedgehogs and 3 woodmice. Hedgepigs and Hoglets Rescue Admissions 45 35 25 20 io Feb ay Aui Ncv •2021 •2CQ2 •2023 ## **Staff Training** This year our Wildlife Care Manager has completed the Secret World of Wildlife Rescue (SWWR) “Certificate in Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation”, the SWWR “Setting up and Running a Wildlife Hospital” and also the separate species-specific courses on foxes, badgers and hedgehogs. This learning has assisted us in updating our protocols and in preparing for the possibility of future licensing laws in England. Our Wildlife Care Manager is the charity`s designated safeguarding lead and has completed the N.S.P.C.C. CPD training in Child Protection in Primary Schools to meet the requirements of our Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy ## **The Team** This year we have been supported by a new voluntary part time Wildlife Care Assistant Michaela Swann and we wish to extend our deepest gratitude to her for all of her time and dedication to the hedgehogs and charity; we welcome her as a valued member of the team ## **Delivering Education** We delivered a powerpoint presentation and talk as part of the “Sustainable Pendeen” series of events at The Centre of Pendeen on the subject of “The Life of a Hedgehog” to a packed audience alongside such partners as the Cornwall Wildlife Trust. This is an important part of our education programme and something we wish to build on in the future. We delivered nature play sessions to beavers, scouts and early years playgroups involving `protect wildlife playchute games` and active wild mammal play, e.g. `Bat and Moth` game. These sessions are important, not least because children and young people engage with play that looks at ways to protect and nurture our wildlife but also because they go home and share with their parents how to protect the species too. We worked in partnership with Penwith College Tutors and student`s delivering a group talk and releasing a hedgehog back into the college grounds as a collaborative team project and we delivered 3 primary school assemblies in partnership with the local Mayor and Town Council`s Hog Hole Frames Project Social media continues to be the mainstay of our daily education programme and is an efficient conduit to raising awareness of current issues in the form of facebook, instagram and twitter. Our audience reach continues to grow and we have over 2000 followers. With the help of our patrons, we plan to continue developing this audience and promoting education and conservation messages. We balance out our daily diary post`s with evidence based post`s on topics such as hibernation and preventative strategies, e.g. we gained a positive relationship with 2 grounds people who maintain local housing gardens to encourage checks for hedgehogs prior to strimming and we shared a photo of them proudly showing their `check before you strim` stickers. Our website offers ways of helping to protect hedgehogs in your garden and everyday life and gives information on topics such as when to rescue and the threats hedgehogs face. We have hosted several market stalls and community farm event`s involving engaging with the public to raise awareness and offer informative leaflets ## **Wild Mammals** Causes of admission included high levels of endo and ecto-parasites including roundworm, lungworm, fluke, ringworm, mange, fly eggs, a rare thorny headed worm and bacterial infections. The repercussions of climate change events including a protracted summer heatwave and a butterfly/caterpillar die off resulted in cases of severe exhaustion, dehydration and starvation. Those admitted due to human activity included strimmer injuries, road casualties, injuries by another animal, poisoning, net entanglement and traps (including a lobster creel). Other causes included metabolic bone disease, neurological issues, blindness, end of life palliative care and displaced orphaned hoglets. Hydrotherapy, nebulization and oxygen therapy were supportive sources of treatment. ## **Income and Expenditure** ## ***Significant Sources of Income for the Financial Period** Income included 2 `GiveaCar` donations, one bequeathed donation (and linked school/Christmas fundraiser`s), one crowd fundraiser for specific equipment, trust grant funding and annual support from the British Hedgehog Preservation Society - Legacy donation`s £100 & linked £379 from school - Ring fenced donation(s) to purchase rescue building - Grants £3579.00 - Fundraising and Sales £711 - Online auction ## ***Significant Expences for the Financial Period** - Vetario TM50 and Burtons Oxygenator - Public Liability Insurance - Rescue building - Website ## **Reserves Policy** Financial reserves are necessary to support the charity in times of need, such as an influx of admissions and associated rise in veterinary costs or a drop in the level of donations. These reserves are necessary to cover 3 months of running costs and as a precaution against dissolution funds should this be deemed necessary in the future.
