Chapel Street Music: Chairman’s Report for 2024
2024 has been the charity’s busiest year to date, pursuing our charitable aims of delivering high quality musical performances for the region of West Cornwall, giving performance opportunities to musical professionals from the county, and mounting outreach and educational events for young people and the local community.
Over two concert series - Spring and Autumn - we presented eleven concerts in Penzance. All but three (given by guest performers) were given by musicians from the county, and achieved a growing, enthusiastic audience averaging roughly seventy per concert.
We also mounted a weekend’s Festival in April, with a mixture of collaborative events, some of which were free for attendees. There was a focus on youth, with a whole day being given over to young wind players from all over the county, and an event in partnership with the Minack Theatre Acting Academy.
With some support from Carn to Cove, the Chapel Street Ensemble also gave other concerts in different parts of Cornwall - as far afield as Liskeard and Saltash.
In collaboration with the Minack Academy (see above) and Coppice Theatre, we mounted a series of free events for families and children: one in our own April Festival and a second event as part of the Golowan Festival in June.
We continued our sequence of schools workshops in partnership with Cornwall Music Services Trust, with one full day in the Spring and another in the Autumn, both in Penzance. Each day was attended by between 200 - 250 children from local primary schools. Over the course of
these workshops, we have reached out to, and worked with, over 12 primary schools from the area - work which will continue on into 2025.
During the year we have provided employment and a range of performance opportunities for over 25 professional musicians from all over the county.
Funded by a scheme run by Cavatina, the chamber music trust, we have been able to offer free tickets to all under 26 year olds attending our concerts. Ongoing funding awards from The Postcode Lottery, Cornwall Community Foundation, FEAST, Penzance Town Council, Cavatina and the St Aubyn Foundation have enabled us to deliver both family / children’s events and the schools workshops at no cost for those attending, and have also enabled us to cap our concert ticket price at £10, thereby maintain its affordability for all those wishing to attend.
