Chapel Street Music: Chairman’s Report 2023
- 1) Concert activity in Penzance.
Chapel Street Music continued its regular Spring and Autumn concert series, with six concerts in the Spring and five in the Autumn. Most concerts were given by members of the Chapel Street Ensemble. The Ensemble was enhanced by the addition of Chapel Street Winds, made up from some of the finest wind players in Cornwall. The programme was also enriched by three excellent guest artists: Libby Burgess (as part of her Bach ‘48 project), Martin Jones (pianist) and the Trio Kurtag.
The Ensemble was also pleased be invited to present events in the Golowan Festival and on the Penzance Litfest Fringe in June and July, respectively.
- 2) Audiences.
Audience numbers have grown fairly steadily and stabilised, now regularly between 60-70 for most concerts.
This means that, over the year, CSM will have provided concert programmes to audiences in Penzance totalling over 900.
CSM subscribed to the Cavatina Chamber Music Trust scheme, which subsidises free tickets for the under 26s. Whilst this is a positive initiative, it has been a slow process engendering regular attendance within that age group. Over the year, we will have attracted between 20-30 young people in that category.
- 3) Charities.
CSM continued its pattern of one concert in every series being nominated for a local charity. ‘Growing Links’ was the nominated charity in February, and the final concert of the year will give all donations to Trelya. The church continues to support this initiative by waiving its hire fee for these charity events.

4) The Chapel Street Ensemble spread its wings county-wide this year, and gave a further ten concerts outside the regular series, mostly outside the locality of West Penwith. Of these, three were supported by Carn to Cove, and there have been others for promoters on the Roseland, Hole Farm (Liskeard), Lavethan (Bodmin) and St Endellion. These have been valuable opportunities for the group to develop further, and to share programmes generated in and for Penzance further afield.

5) Fundraising.

We have had some success in this area this year, with grants from FEAST (£1,000), the St Aubyn Foundation (£6,000 over three years), The People’s Local Trust (£16,500), Cornwall Community Fund (£5,000), and Penzance Town Council (£2,400). These successes have been welcomed and, looking to the future, will enable CSM to do much more community and educational work.

6) Other projects. This funding has enabled the first instalment of several such projects in 2023/2024. On December 1st, there will be the first of a series of interactive concerts for schools, and December 10th will see the first of three projects for families and children which will be completely free of charge for all to access.

7) Volunteers. Janet Bardsley (Trustee) has been successful in starting up a small group of volunteers to look after front of house duties and general organisational support for concerts in our home venue in Penzance. This has been extremely successful, and bodes well for the possible formation of a Friends organisation in the future.

8) Trustees. CSM a continues to operate with a group of trustees which is committed but needs to grow both in number and skill base. The search goes on for appropriate additions to the number.
